TosaythattheactivitiesintheWestIndiesofKerryPacker andhisso-calledWorld SeriesCricketorganisationhashadabig impactoninternationalcricketwouldbe avastunderstatement.

Whateverthemeritsor demeritsofthecase, the resultofthesigningof WestIndiesplayersbythe Packerorganisationhas beentovirtuallycutoutthe wholeoralmostallof theWestIndiesbestTeat teamfrominternational, competition.

Therewasasimilarresult,thoughnotquiteso sweeping,withtheAustralianteam.

InthecaseoftheWest Indies, thesituationisnot madeanybetterbyMr. Packer'sassertionthatby discussiontheWestIndies tourofIndiaandSriLanka couldhavebeenalteredby afortnighttoenablePacker playerstoundertakeit.

This,ofcourse,isquite unsatisfactory,andnotparticularlycleverastheWest Indiescricketauthorityconductstourssuchasthisand notanyotheroutsidebody orperson.

Therewillbeagooddeal ofsupportfortheviewexpressedbytheWestIndies BoardofControlwhichhas assertedthattheplayers contractedtoKerryPacker's W.S.C.haveonlythemselves toblamefortheirexclusion fromTestcricket.

MurrayfromthethirdTest team,thecaptain,Clive Lloyd,andtheotherfive Packerplayersintheteam alsoquit.

Thecontrolboardannouncedanewteamand saidthatthePackermen wouldnotbechosenforthe restoftheseriesandwould beconsideredforfuture Testsonlyaftertheyhad lefttheW.S.C.programme.

Theboardsaidthatit tookactiononlyafterthe playersdeclinedtomake themselvesavailableforthe IndianandSriLankatour (whichclashedinpartswith futurePackerMatches).

Sevennewmenhavebeen pickedfortheIndiantour.

Theboard,inthecourse ofalongstatement,said that"Lloydandsubsequentlytheothercontracted Packerplayersclearly showedthattheirfirstand foremostconsiderationwas tothePackergroup

"Theyrefusedtorepresenttheirhomeland the WestIndies.Itisbecause oftheiractionsanddecisionsthatthisimpassehas occurred.

Theboardalsopointed outthatithadprovidedits PackerplayerswithanopportunitywhichAustralia, PakistanandEnglandhad refusedtheirsbyallowing themtoplayinTestsaswell asW.S.C.matchesand"in thiswaytheWestIndian playerswereabletoenjoy thebestoftwoworlds."

Inthestatementthere wasalsodenialofsome suggestionaboutnegotiationswiththeIndiancricket authorities.

Thisisallverysadand onceagainthemainloser iscricketitself.

Itisnoteasytounderstandtheinitialactionof Lloydofresigningoverthe selectionofateamwhich hewastohavecaptained.

Lloydisawidelyexperiencedprofessionalcricketer whomusthavehadtheexperienceinthepastofnot agreeingwiththeselection ofthisorthatplayerina teaminwhichhehas played.

Thereisnothingunusual aboutthis,asevery cricketer,professionalor amateur,dufferorchampion,knows.

Theotherplayerswho followedLloydmighthave donesooutofloyaltyor becausethey, too, disagreed withthedroppingofthree players.

Agoodquestionis: WouldLloydhavetaken similaractionovertheselectionoftheteamtorepresent anEnglishcountytowhich hewascontracted?

ForallLloydandthe otherplayersknew, the WestIndianauthorities mighthavewantedtogive otheryoungplayersa chancetoshowtheirworth andto"blood"themfor Testsinthefuture.

Oneofthegoodthings thathasemergedfromall thedisputationisthedepth oftalentintheWestIndies whichhasbeendemonstratedinthethirdTest.
