Inthepast,therehad been a proportionately highernumberofReligious actuallynursinganddoing theotherworkofthehospitalthan,say,inthe UnitedStates.

AroundAustraliashe sensedapprehensionbySistersthattherewereinsufficientReligioustomaintain thisposition.

ButevenintheUnited States,withgreaterlayinvolvement,Catholichospitalsstillhadtothinkout thenewroleoftheReligiouscommunity.

PASTORALTEAM

Thepastoralteamlooked foropportunitiestopray withpatients,praywithrelatives,bringCommunion tothepatientsataconvenienttimeandnotifythe parishesifoneoftheir memberswassick. Massinthehospital chapelwaseitherat4.30 p.m.,forthesakeofvisitors andpatients,orat11.30 a.m.,tocatchstaffontheir lunchbreak.

Pastoralcareneededto begivenbyaprofessionally trainedgroupandnotjust bywell-meaninghospital visitors.

Patientsoftenbaddifficultiesabouttheirmarriage,ethicalquestionsor theirattitudestotheChurch.

FortheCatholichospitals,itisfeltthatthenew associationwillgiveabetter foruminwhichtodiscuss themedico-moralissuesthat facethehospitals.
