CHURCHANDPEOPLE

Aparishmissionprovidesavaluableopportunity ofstudyingtheChurchatwork-ofanalysingthe dynamicsofapopularFaith,thewaysinwhichthe Churchfunctionsamongcommonpeople.

AmissionshowsthattheCatholicsenseofthe Churchisdecidedlyconcrete, andthatthepastoral strategywhichhasalwaysprovedeffectiveisonethat involvesspecificformsandmeasures. TheChurchhasnotbeescontentmerelytospeak ofspiritualgrowthandmoralfreedom;itsapproach hasnotbeentoproclaimtheWordinageneralised andabstractway.

TheChurchhasalwaysacceptedwhathasbeen called"thescandalofparticularity";theburdenof bangspecific,andthereforeself-Imamthemessieiess ofinvolvementwiththemartial.

TheearlyChurchfoundthepaganworlda(mittialgroundforevangelisation,notonlyonaccount ofthespiritualbankruptcyofpaganism,butalsobeWepaganspiritwasnaturallysensuousand incarnational,productiveofnumerousfeastsand festivalswhichChristianitywasabletoappropriate andusetoatomsitsownhighertruthsandvalues.

ThecelebrationofChristmasrtonlyoneexample ofthisprocessofincarnation;andthus,theearly Christian,farfromdestroyingpaganrevelry,transmuteditintoChristianjoy.

TheChurch'sreadinesstokeepalivethereligious valuesofpaganism,nubilepurifyingandexalting them,revealsanimportanttruthaboutitsstyleof culturalandpastoraloperation.

ItexplainstheemphasiswhichCatholicismhas alwaysplacedonhabitandlawandstructure,on whatMichaelNovakhascalled"thelifegivingpower Offorms,formalities,routinesandrepetitions". Suchpracticesgiveregularpointsofinsertionin thebusylivesofaveragepeople,therebyfostering theirspiritualfreedombyprovidingshortyetfrequent releasefromthepressingclaimsoftheirnormalenvronment.

Therecentpasthasbeenplainlyhostiletothe notionthatlivesshouldbeboundedbyhabitsor lawsortraditions.

Atitsrootsuchhostilityinvolvesarejectionof theincarnate-areluctancetoacceptthekindof specificconditionsandformsthatmakereligiousfaith possibleandevenappealingforthegreatbulkof people;eventhoughsuchformsmayseemrestrictive andunimaginativetothosewhoareinstinctively spiritual.

REASONFORAPPEAL

'Thatiswhy,"headmitted,"IoftenBedmyselfatsuchcross-purposeswiththemodemworld: havebeenaconvertedpaganlivingamongapostate puritans."(SurprisedbyJoy,1955).

TheresilienceofCatholictraditionswasimpressivelydemonstratedduringtheparishmission-most notably,perhaps,inthevariousreligiousdevotions thatweepstaged.

Amajorreasonfortheirpopularappealwasthat theywerespecificintheircontentandinthekind ofdemandstheymadeuponthosewhoattended.
