AstatementbyArchbishopGoodyonthegivingofcammunion andconfirmationtohandicappedchildrenhasbeenwe'comedwarmly andcalleda"breakthrough."

ThisweekArchbishop Goodyannouncedthatin thecaseofhandicapped children,theusualnorms governingcommunioncould besetasideifthefaithof thefamilywasinevidence.

CatholicChurchlawrequiresthatapersonreceivingcommunionhave sufficientknowledgethatit istrulytheBodyofChrist. Withhandicappedchildrenitisnotalwayspossibletotestthedegreeto whichtheymayhavethis awareness.

TheArchbishopalso openedupthepossibilityof confirmationforhandicappedchildreninindividualcases.

Mrs.VickideHaas,one ofwhosefivechildrenis handicapped,calledthe statement"ananswerto prayer"andabreakthough fortheCommitteeforCatholicCareoftheHandicapped.
