THESCHOOLS

Manystructuresandinstitutionsofthatsocietyfail tomeettheneedsofAborigines,andaredestructive oftheiridentityandculture.

Thecommissioncallsfor separatecommunityservicesforAboriginesin legalmatters,healthand education.

ExistingAboriginalser-

vicesaremakinganotable contributiontoAboriginal self-determination, and meritstrongsupport,he says. Thestatementcriticises schoolsforreinforcingprejudiceandracism. ItcallsfortheinvolvementofAboriginalelders andparentsinschools,and theuseofAboriginallanguages. Itencouragestheacceptanceofculturaldiversity, andawideningofoptions forAboriginesandallAustralians.

Whilesupportingchurch peopleworkingamong Aborigines,thestatement suggeststhatAborigines shouldhaveagreatersay inchurchdecisionsabout themselves.

Thestatementalsosuggeststhatforsometimeto come,ChristianAborigines maypreferseparateblack churches.
