Thedegreeofpolarisationwhichhasoccurredwas graphicallyrevealedrecentlyinthestrangelyapocalyptic languageusedbytheAttorney-Generaltodescribethe visitingEnglishmoralcampaigner,MrsMaryWhitehouse,as"anagentofdarkness."

WhereistheChurchtostandinthefaceofthis polarity

SupportersoftheFcetivalofLightsometimesclaim thatitisexpressingtheChristianviewpoint,yetthere aresomeChristianswhoaredecidedlyuneasyabout .meofthatorganisatica'sobjectivesandmethods.

CHURCH'SSTAND?

Imysellsympathisewithmuchoftheconcernthat accountsfortheexistenceoftheFestivalofLight,and Istronglysupportcertaincauseswhichthatbodyadvocates.

Forseveralreasons,however, haveneverfeltit rightthateitherortheChurchshouldbeofficially alignedwithanorganisationofthiskind.

Thefirstisthatthecrusadingorganisationtends tobe,orappearstootherstobeundulynegativein approach.

Thisistheproblemweallfacewhenweconcentrateonopposingevil.

IndeedtheChurchitselfeasilyappearsinalltoo negativealight.

Ifindthatwhenevermakeapublicstatementabout anything,itwillgenerallyappearaccordingtothe headlinesthatIhavebeenbusy'deploring"or"condemning"thisorthatunit.

Inactualfact, spendverylittletimedeploring orcondemning,becausetheChurchhasapositiveand liberatinggospeltop.slaim.

NOTONLYSEX

Thereisaplaceforwatch-dogs,intheareaofpublicmoralsasinothermatters,andamgladthatthem arethosewhomakethistheirconcern.

ButtheChurchatlargemustnotbesidetracked fromitscentraltaskofproclaimingthepositivemessage ofChrist.

Secondly,thetendencytofocusmoralthinkingon mattersrelatedtosexisdangerousfortheChurch. Moralityisconcernedwiththewholerangeofhuman attitudesandbehaviour,bothindividualandcorporate.

Sexualmoralityisanimportantpartofmorals,but onlyonepartandnotnecesmrilythemostimportant

ThemampeopleoutsidetheChurchwhoassume thatsinequalssex. ThisismrtainlynottheChristianviewandthe Church.mustbecarefulnottoencouragepeopleto makethatequation.

ThethirdreasonisthathowevermuchsympathisewithsouroftheconcernsoftheFestivalof Light,itisanindependentorganisationwithitsown goalsandpolicies,andtheChurchshouldbenomore identifiedwithitthanwithanyonepoliticalparty.

WIDESPREADCONCERN

Bysodoingitwouldlosetheopportunitytospeak outfororagainstanyparticularpolicy.

Whatitisimperial')toappreciate,however,isthe backgroundagainstwhichanorganisationliketheFestivalofLighthascometobirthandgatheredconsiderablepublicsupport.

Thereis,Ibelieve,widespreadconcerninthecommunity,amongmanywhowouldnotalignthemselves withtheFestivalofLight,attheformationofattitudes whichcheapensex,dehumanisepeoplebyportraying themasobjectsofgratification,andthusgravelyimpairwholesomehumanrelationships.

CLIMATEOFOBSESSION

Letmetrytoexpresssomeofmyownattitudeson thesemattersinsummaryform,

1.Oneofthemostharmfulthingsisthesheerbull( ofsexually-orientedmaterial,notstrictlypornographic, whichiscreatingasocialclimateofobsessionwith sex,particularlyinitspurelyphysicalaspect.

Thishastheeffectoftrivialisingthesexualrelationshipandmakingpeoplesexualobjectsratherthan fullhumanbeings.

FREEDOM?

Inaworldwherehumannatureisasweknowit tobe,unbridledfreedomforanyindividualinevitably meansthediminutionoffreedomforsomeoneelse.

Thefreedomofawomantohawanabortionat willisanoutrightdenialofthefreedomoftheunborn childtocomeenbirth.

Thefreedomofamantotreatawomanasasexual objectcutsacrossherfreedomforfullhumandignity.

Onthisbasisgovernmentsrightlyputrestraintson individualfreedomswhichwouldpolluteanddamage thephysicalenvirotuntht.

BACKLASH

Itisillogicaltoarguethatthesocialandmoral environmentcanbeconservedwithoutrestrainton antisocialactivities.

Thosewhoregrettheemergenceandvociferousness ofsuchorganisationsastheFestivalofLightwould dowellenaskwhatelementsinthepresentsocialclimatehavecausedthemtoemerge.

WhatMatthewwasrecountingwastheorderofprioritythatChristplaceduponhimselfandtheapostles. What amsayingisthatthefactofordination placesapriorityuponapriest'slife.ThepriestofGod isordainedprimarilyforthePeopleofGod.

PRIMARYOBLIGATION

Thismeansasettingupofprioritiesforthedifferentvocations,thedifferentgifts,thedifferentabilities.

Hence,whensaythatpriestsareordainedessentiallyforthebuildingupofthefaithful useuoderliding theirprimaryobligation.

Circumstances,amissionfromabishop,aspecial callfromGodmaychangethepriorityinagivencase.

Forexample,StFrancisXavierleftthefaithfulof GodtopreachtounbelieversintheFarEast.This, however,doesnotinvalidatetheprioritywhichisrootedinthefunctionthatordinationgivesapriest.

DESIRETOSERVE
