Itwasgenerallyconceded thathisdrive,energyand enthusiasmhadcontributed greatlytothehighstandard ofthegameinthisState andtoW.A:snationalsuccessandtheinternational successofseveralofour playersinrecentyears. HehadbeencloselyassociatedwiththeestablishmentofthenewPerth HockeyStadiumanditwas unfortunatethathediedonlyashortwhilebeforethe startoftheinternational tournamentwhichistobe heldatthestadium.

Itisassumedthatthealterationtotheholding-themanorholding-the-ballrule, surprisinglydecidedonby theNationalFootballLeague,hasbeenintroducedto speedupthegame.Whetheritwillaccomplishthat objectivewithoutdisadvantagetosmallplayersis arguable. Andwhetherfurthertamperingwithanalreadycontroversialruleisdesirable isalsoarguable. Undertheamendedrule aplayerwillbedeemedto heinpossessionoftheball eventhoughhehasbounced it.Thiswouldseemtodisadvantagethefastplayer whobreaksawayfroma packandbeforeheistackledbouncestheball.
TheClaremontcoach, GrahamMosssaysthatan artwillbelosttothegame andinsomerespectsheis right,butitcanbeargued thattheplayerwhodoes thisbythrowingtheballin frontofhimandthenretrievingitcouldtechnically bepenalisedforthrowing theball(althoughleague umpireshereseldomifever awardsuchapenalty).
Thenewrulemayresult inrougherplayanditmay resultingreateruseofhandball-presumablyaplayer onbreakingawayandbeforebeingtackledsimply hand-ballstheballinfront ofhim,notnecessarilyto ateam-mate,andthenretrievingitwillbewithinthe newrule.
Whatevertheresult,it seemsfairlycertainthatthe amendmentwillbringeven furthercontroversyonarule whichhashadfartoomuch ofthateversinceitwas firstintroducedandthen amended.
