Inreflectingontheirbrief experienceoftheretupe situation,theparticipants intheconferenceraisedthe followingquestions:

Whyarerefugeesleavingthesecurityoftheir homesandthenaturalpull oftheirfatherland,tostep intotheunknownandafuturethatmaybefarfrom rosy?

DuringtheConferenceone ofthematterswhichreceivedcloseattentionwasthe refugeesituationinThaibind.

"Refugeescomeintheir tousandsfromLaosacross tineMekong,"theofficialreportonthesurvey,issued bytheAustralianCatholic Relief,stated.

"TheThaiauthorities screenthemandsendthem totheNonKhairefugee camp.Thiscampislike alamvillage.

"Whenwevisitedthe camptherewere43.000refugeeslivingthere,ofwhom 100wereChristians.

"Duetoovercrowding, enforcedidlenessandinsufficientsanitaryfacilities,the conditionsatthecampleave muchtobedesired-but theyarenotdesperate.

Theoriginalsemi-permanentstructureshavingprovedtobeinadequate,apermanenttwo-storeybuilding wasbeingputup,andwas nearingcompletion-an evidentsignthatthecamp wouldremaintherefor sometime.

Therefugees,aswellas theThaigovernment,were deeplyappreciativeofthe servicesrenderedbythe Churchandothervoluntary organisations,thereport stated.

Understandably,theThai governmentwasfarfrom beinganxioustoabsorball theserefugeesandithad beenurgingothercountries toadmitareasonablenumber.

Itwouldappearthatthe countriesthatdidadmit somerefugees-thenumber admittedbeingtotallyinadequateconsideringthe numbers-usuallychosethe

moreskilledones. Thailandevidentlyhad apprehensions that it mighteventuallybeobliged, throughforceofcircumstances,toabsorbavast numberofrefugees,thus compoundingherowndifficultiesintheareasof education,etc.
