For those who look on birthday excitement in inverse proportion to the number of years they have scored, the return of yet another Pentecost remembrance could be just another plodding church anniversary. Not so for the Church and definitely not so for Pope John Paul as he plunges with characteristic single-mindedness into his Marian year, stretched to 14 months so that its Pentcostal beginnings can be capped off with its Assumption conclusion. Australia stood in the queue fo many years to experience the hitherto strange concept of a pope who wanted to be seen and heard in every noo and cranny of his Church. We caught at least a glimpse of a man who put God first in his life with an overpowering energy that makes an impression in the most secular quarters. Barely catching his breath in a travel schedule that still pounds through South America, later the USA, Germany, his native Poland he is every bit the paradox of a man in a hurry to cross the world's oceans but equally determined to ponder and probe 20th century civilisation to its roots in the light of the Church's heology. It is the paradox of Pentecost itself. Outside the clamour of the streets crowds, the hoarse oices of the aposties struggling to be eard in an unsympathetic environment; inside, a mood of sile ce. prayer and recollection, receptive to the Spirit who can cha ge the face of the earth.

NEW YORK: It is no wonder catechists have a hard time determining what to emphasise when there are such great extremes within the church they teach about, said Bishop Raymond Lucker to the National Conference of Diocesan Directors of Religious Education. Contrasts within the Catholic Church on a wide ra ge of issues make teaching difficult, he said.

Mary was present on Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles, inspiring them to evangelise in Christ's name. Pentecost is regarded as the birthday of the Catholic Church. The pope had special reasons for choosing Pentecost and the Feast of the Assumption, as the dates of the Marian year, said an editorial
in the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano.

toward which history is directed," the editorial said. The announcement of a Marian Year is an example of the pope's deep personal devotion to Mary. The pope's travels have · included stops at famous international Marian pilgrimage shrines such as Lourdes, France, Fatima, Portugal, Guadalupe, Mexico, and Czestochowa in his native Poland.
hails
John Paul II also makes a practice of visiting local Marian shrines during his international trips. The first Marian Year was held from December 8, 1954, to December 8, 1955, in commemorating the 1 OOth anniversary of the formal proclamation of the Dogma of the lmrnacutato Conception, which says that Mary was born without Original Sin.

Three hours after my friend Regina died, the doorbell of her home began ringing as neighbours and friends stopped by to offer condolences to her family. Sir, I was grieved to hear that the charter of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace has been revo ed. Here are a few comparisons which portray the state of the "richer and the poorer" in Australia. Robert Holmes & Court increased his w alth at the rate of $2904 per min. in the past year. (Source - Business Review Wee ly) while an estimated 2 -3 million Australians exist below the poverty line. (Source Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace) According to the 1985-86 budg t. corporate profits are $11,CXX) rrulhon higher than 1982-83, while 800.000 Australian children - that 1s appro . on m f - live in poverty (Source - Catholic Commission for Jusuce and Peace). I particularly enjoyed Pathways of The Spirit (on parish life) this week - in fact I think the whole presentation of the paper was exceptional. Congratulations! This week has been a week of prayer for Christian Unity. At our church last Sunday, World Communications Day, we were urged to attend a local Anglican church and pray with our 'separated' brethren. A leading W.A. Catholic theologian once said "nothing eparates us as much as Baptism unites us". A fnend, accompany ng me to Mass, left the church ahead of me. While waiting outside, obviously a stranger to the parish, she was mazed t the lack of cornmurucanon towards h r by the parishioners S p rated brethren?
