LAKES OFFICE

Sevenlakes company is the creative office that leads in the food packaging in Thailand and is a specialist in thermoforming packaging for flexible packaging. ASWA offer the idea of how to represent their new headquarters which architecturally starts from their product. The interior space of 230 sq.m. fits for 6-8 staff seating, ten seat meeting room, and the area for the managing director room. BY THERMOFORMING

Approximately 400 square meters, the site is close to the Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok and is surrounded by a low-rise residential building and empty low land. The new office tends to amplify their product, the thermoforming packaging, and translate into an architectural language. The triangular volume with the trapezoid plan shape comes from the idea of thermoforming packaging, followed by the functional inside. The highest volume of 6 meters is next to the roadside for the staff area, which fits 6-8 people, and the ceiling is inclined to a meeting room and a managing director room. The steel structure is selected for a structural design to play a prominent role in this project because it can provide an irregular shape with a wide span. The exterior material of black trapezoid volume with two scoop courtyards is a metallic black aluminum composite that clads all over the building to perform as a single sheet wrapping material like the company’s thermoforming packaging product.

is not all about cost, it is about a commitment to net-zero carbon emissions. Currently housing stock is accountable for approximately 35% of our total global energy consumption, so insulation is key in order to reduce our reliance on energy and our ability to reduce and phase out fossil heating fuels, such as gas. There are also health benefits and fuel poverty issues which are completely covered by adopting a Passivhaus construction. Given the background growth of Passivhaus, Aluprof are delighted to announce their involvement in what is claimed to be the world’s largest low-carbon student residential development taking place in Bristol for The University of the West of England (UWE). The new development taking place at the Frenchay Campus covers approximately 65,000m2 and provides 2,250 new student residences. The scheme started on site in 2021 and is set to have the first phase complete for first-year student intake in 2023. Designed by Passivhaus Trust members Stride Treglown Architects and QODA Consulting, the new halls will offer carbon neutral accommodation which falls inline with the University’s ‘2030 strategy’. The project follows on from what now will be the second largest student accommodation project completed to date, ’The House’ at Cornell Tech in New York. Aluprof UK became involved in the design development of the scheme from RIBA Stage 2 and worked alongside Stride Treglown, QODA Consulting and Turner & Townsend to develop a high performance facade solution which helps the new development to achieve Passivhaus standards. Facade detailing and cost analysis support was provided by Aluprof UK prior to tender release to ensure budgets met stakeholders’ expectations. Aluprof UK also offered tender support to VINCI Construction UK, the main contractor awarded the scheme, in the careful selection of Aluprof experienced subcontractors to deliver a compliant tender. Aluprof UK have been involved in a collaborative process from RIBA Stage 2 onwards and will continue to support the project through to its completion. When we talk of Passivhaus we generally think of ‘one-off’ grand designs style projects where costs seem no objection, but this is a dated view as Passivhaus is rapidly becoming a mainstream construction methodology. Recent cost analysis from the Passivhaus Trust (1) suggests that a Passivhaus certified residential scheme is around 8% more expensive than an equivalent competitive tender build; further analysis suggests as Passivhaus claims more middle ground in construction, the extra-over costs can reduce to just Passivhaus4%.

Alex Wysom, Operations Director at Denval takes up the story, “Aluprof worked with Stride Treglown Architects to provide a comprehensive specification for their high performance Passivhaus certified MB104 window system from the earliest stage, Denval provided cost plan and technical support to the project management company and subsequently the main contractors who were providing tenders for the scheme.

The Aluprof systems specified for the project consist of MB-104 SI (Passivhaus Certified) windows and doors and the MB-SR50N HI+ (Passivhaus Certified) curtain walling system. The specified finish uses a Super Durable Polyester or Class 2 powder coat in an AkzoNobel Interpon ‘Gold Pearl’ colour, reference YY217E. Aluprof have long been recognised across Europe for providing Passivhaus certified products and Aluprof UK are active members of the Passivhaus Trust in the UK. The project is to be completed in two phases, first is the redevelopment of Carroll Court on campus where student houses have been demolished to make way for the start on site in November

Aluprof UK are delighted to be leading and supporting the development of Passivhaus construction across the UK and are already working with specifiers and developers on further schemes to help active the UK’s challenge of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Privacy glass is proving highly effective in both commercial and domestic settings. It can be used to zone and define large open plan spaces to provide board rooms, work stations and breakout spaces, or to maximise limited space with carefully sited mezzanines – all at the touch of a button.

Privacy isn’t the only property that we can incorporate using interlayers; glass processors can also add high security, fire resistance or sound attenuation, making switchable glass even more versatile. Switchable glass can be used to shield high value retail items from the view of potential thieves, or VIP passengers from the glare of unwelcome media attention. By switching from clear to opaque at the touch of a button, high security switchable glass provides a new form of defence for security professionals, affording clear sightlines for security teams when switched off, but no view at all for a potential aggressor when switched on.

Switchable glass and complete privacy are ours to command at the touch of a button, as Susan Sinden, Commercial Manager of leading glass processor ESG Group Ltd, explains. One of the most striking glass processing innovations of recent years has been the advent of switchable privacy glass. Laminated glass products such as ESG Switchable™ are created using a technical interlayer through which an electric current can be passed. When the current is switched off, the glass will form an opaque panel, but when the current is switched on, the glass becomes transparent, letting in light and creating a clear view. This can be used anywhere that the current can be applied, in doors, windows, atriums, partitions or balcony panels, with equal success.

One of the most recent uses of secure switchable glass is in self-contained battery-powered front door panels, which do not require a mains power supply. Panels such as ESG’s Secure Vue™ are a great option to replace outmoded spy holes. Allowing clear, unobstructed observation of a caller when switched off, they also provide complete privacy when turned on. This is also beneficial in medical and high security settings, where it allows observation without intervention in sensitive and confidential situations. Undoubtedly, the advances in design and functionality in switchable glass have resulted in there being far more glazing choices to make than simply the size of your windows.

According to GEZA, the project implies designing the SPACE (Architecture) within its ENVIRONMENT (light and landscape) through the seasons of TIME. Their architecture strives for new meanings, while creating new identities, and is designed based on a unique point of view and sensibility in regards to the context, the materiality of the details, and the human-centered solutions, always towards a poetic dimension.

RETHINKING18 THE INDUSTRIAL ARCHITECTURE

Founded in 1999, GEZA Architettura is the multi-disciplinary architecture studio of Stefano Gri and Piero Zucchi, whose projects have been internationally recognized with awards for their exquisite design solutions and strategic thinking. Synthesis of Ideas, Beauty, and Functionality

ARCHITECTS CASE STUDY

ARCHETECH - PAGE

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND NATURE

The industrial architecture project is a great opportunity to rethink the connection of architecture-nature, bringing the individual back into focus. GEZA’s projects merge aspects of engineering and economics in researching formal abstraction while combining different logics. The landscape and its features define the project choices, celebrating the elegance of timeless architecture and the sustainability of the internal workspaces.

GEZA rethinks the workspaces, taking advantage of all the variables and constraints - productive flow, working dynamics, efficiency goals, location features - and creating new environments where the landscape and the individual’s well-being are at the core of the project.

A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH WITH HUMAN BEING AND LANDSCAPE AT ITS CORE

The industrial architecture project is a great opportunity to rethink the connection of architecture-nature, bringing the individual back into focus. “

The studio simultaneously deals with the production processes and the relationships between artifice and nature, foreground and background, working environments, and outdoor spaces. Each project is designed to become one with the landscape, reinforcing its presence within its surroundings.

ARCHITECTS CASE STUDY

Architecture must balance different reading scales, from the overview to the most minute details. GEZA bases its projects on this approach, changing perspective from the outside to the inside, switching zoom lenses from the big scale to the singular element in order to guarantee the quality of their work. In this way, the architecture doubles its function to bring new identities to both the territory and the human beings’ everyday life.

ZOOM LENS – SHAPE AND MATTER

READING THE TERRITORY AND THE INTERNAL SPACE

MONOCHROMIC AND MATERIALITY

Monochromic, pure colours and materials allow for exploration of different surfaces, depths, thoughts, gradients, tactile sensations, and light interactions. Black and white are harsh, neutral colours, yet they merge harmoniously with the natural elements. They are, in fact, a means to highlight two things: the landscape, green hues painted, and the human being, made of dynamic colours himself that blur into nature when in action.

RIGOROUS ESSENTIALITY OF FORMS

Industrial architecture is physically very impactful in regard to the territory and the landscape - as are infrastructures - and thus must be responsibly designed to merge with the environment in a gentle and timeless manner. The definition of simple acts guarantees a measurable relationship with the territory: horizontal and vertical, repetition and rhythm, light and shadow, straight and curved lines, coloured and neutral marks, black and white.

PAGE 19 - ARCHETECH

ARCHETECH - PAGE 20 ARCHITECTS CASE STUDY

GEZA personalizes the concept of sustainability (intended as conceptual, almost poetic), a current theme that goes beyond environmental best practices. In relation to the pandemic, individuals have discovered themselves in a new condition, juggling between health (physical and mental), smart work, and the company’s needs. In these circumstances, people’s well-being has inevitably become the number-one priority, even in industrial architecture projects: the studio designs humancentered workspaces, featuring flexible layouts, green areas (indoor and outdoor), optimal natural lighting conditions, and cozy Forenvironments.GEZA,sustainability relates to quality of life, particularly within working environments where people spend most of their days, sustaining, indeed, their labour. Sustainability is beauty, as it’s undeniable that a pleasant environment sets the parameters for best performances: design, light, space, nature, and meeting areas all contribute to the overall mental and physical well-being of the employees.

HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN AND SUSTAINABILITY

Great architecture is the result of a complex process that merges different logic, the client’s needs, a variety of professionals and skills, constraints, timing, issues, and design. It requires continuous and rigorous control. The architect - the only one to hold a clear overview of the final outcome - plays a pivotal role in coordinating the professionals, the details, and the compliances at different levels, from day one right through to the end. Accordingly, GEZA Architettura’s projects are the synthesis of ideas, beauty, and functionality. www.geza.it/en/ Fernando Guerra

SCHÖCK PROTECTS AGAINST THERMAL BRIDGING AT 250 CITY ROAD

A FULLY COMPLIANT AND DEPENDABLE PRODUCT RANGE

The slab at the heel is 250mm thick, then thinning and sloping up towards the tip of the balcony.

Previously a 1980s business park the triangular site in Islington, between Angel and Old Street stations, is being transformed into a vibrant, new, low-energy residential community known as 250 City Road. The proposals include two towers of 42 and 36 floors, with the buildings then stepping down on the south side of the site, respectful of the smaller scale of existing neighbouring residential blocks. There will be 930 apartments in total, with a green park at the heart of the scheme, along with ground level shops and cafes. Balconies of course feature throughout and an interesting look involves the concrete cantilever balconies, where the slab at the heel is 250mm thick, but then thinning and sloping up towards the tip of the balcony. There are a number of inner corner balconies incorporated as well. Inevitably thermal bridging at these various connectivity points is a risk and the design detailing required a structural thermal break with total reliability and unquestionable performance.

Schöck offers the widest range of structural thermal break solutions from any European supplier and in the UK enables projects to meet full compliance with the necessary Building Regulations (and the impending Future Homes Standard criteria where relevant). In addition to the Isokorb type used on this project, there are also

An illustration of a typical T type K installation

ARCHETECH - PAGE THERMAL22 BREAK SOLUTIONS

THE BEST-SELLING EUROPEAN THERMAL BREAK SOLUTION

The choice was the Schöck Isokorb T type K for concrete-toconcrete, which is probably the best-selling European thermal break solution for this type of application. It is manufactured using stainless steel and HTE (High Thermal Efficiency) modules with steel fibre reinforced UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete). This guarantees the highest quality thermal separation of balconies and floor slabs, due to its low thermal conductivity and integral load bearing capacity. The need to minimise thermal bridging cannot be overstated with any project, but 250 City Road is designed as a high-density, low-energy residential community. So quite apart from local heat loss, which results in more energy being required to maintain the internal temperature of the building, low internal surface temperatures in the area of the thermal bridge can cause serious condensation. This in turn can lead not only to structural integrity problems with absorbent materials, such as insulation products or plasterboard, but the occurrence of mould growth, which can have serious implications for the occupants in the form of respiratory problems. By incorporating the Schöck Isokorb the thermal outflow is dramatically reduced, there are immediate energy savings and higher internal surface temperatures minimise the risk of condensation.

solutions for concrete-to-steel, steel-to-steel, renovation projects – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. All products have the security of independent BBA Certification, which provides NHBC approval. The temperature factor requirement (fRSI) used to indicate condensation risk, which must be equal to, or greater than 0.75 for residential buildings, is also easily met by incorporating the Isokorb.

Norcros Rock-Tite Exterior Porcelain & Stone System was developed specifically to appeal to landscapers and garden designers, who are looking for an easy-to-use system for installing the increasingly popular 20mm porcelain tiles externally for patios and terraces. One of the latest recommendations from a landscaper indicates that the product is certainly making life easier. Landscaper, Brett Corcoran of TC Fencing & Landscaping, has recently used the product on a patio job in Staffordshire and was full of praise once the project was completed: “After using the Rock-Tite range of products throughout a recent project completed I can strongly recommend it,” he said. This project was an ideal candidate for Norcros Rock-Tite. The home owner wanted to extend their living space into the garden with the installation of porcelain tiles to form a new outdoor leisure area, making the transition from internal to external space as seamless as possible. The end-result is highly attractive and definitely a very worthwhile improvement to the property. The tiles on this project are Johnson Tiles, 20mm porcelain, 600 x 600, from their Boundary collection in colour Dune. Laying the tiles was made much easier than it would otherwise have been without the assistance of Norcros Rock-Tite. www.norcros-adhesives.com ROCK-TITE IS A HIT WITH GARDEN DESIGNERS!

Through an architectural approach anchored in sustainability, the architects chose to design an imposing building with futuristic style on 7 levels in the form of rings of 68 diameter meters. With a double skin holding both thermal and aesthetic functions, the new Orange Côte d’Ivoire headquarters is innovative in its shape, suggestive of a golf ball, a subtle reminder of Abidjan’s renowned Riviera golf course. In a form of a natural extension of the neighboring vegetal axis, the building stands tall by the lagoon in an architecture that aims to materialize the group’s dynamics and overall offer, all the while enhancing and highlighting the local know-how. Going beyond the concept of the classic workplace, the challenge for Koffi & Diabaté was to create a building designed as a place of exchange and creativity, reflecting the DNA of the group.

VILLAGE

From level 4, each floor is equipped with outdoor spaces that allow employees to enjoy the majestic surrounding panorama all the while working or relaxing in the open air. The top floor of the headquarters, with a breathtaking view of the lagoon shore, houses the offices of the top management. The quality of the concrete walls led the architects to directly expose the rough-cast concrete structure. The use of concrete in its materiality brings a minimalist touch highlighting the duality of the building’s language, a subtle discourse between authenticity and hyper-connectivity.

the new Orange Côte d’Ivoire headquarters is innovative in its shape, suggestive of a golf ball, a subtle reminder of Abidjan’s renowned Riviera golf course. “ A strong environmental ambition. The approach of this project is part of a strong energetic and environmental strategy aimed at reducing energy consumption. The concern for the durability of the structures is reflected in the nature of the chosen materials for the most exposed structures on the façade. A sophisticated 40,000m² double skin, consisting of 4,000 pieces, provides passive protection from direct sunlight and limits the amount of heat coming in from outside.

Urban strategy and territory integration. Orange Village seeks, through the design approach, to highlight the urban landscape of Abidjan, becoming a reference building that structures, organizes, and sheds light on the Riviera Golf neighborhood’s urban master plan park. With its variable and tiered levels designed with respect to local urban planning regulations, the three-story building on the main entrance gradually rises to reach a five-story level on the lagoon side. The added extensive greenery on the roofs and fences also contributes to the building’s integration with its immediate surroundings.

ARCHITECTS CASE STUDY

Indeed, the ambition of this project was to assert the leadership position of Orange through an innovative and timeless building, one that would translate the group’s presence and reach in West Africa. From the entrance, the atrium opens to the central garden, which serves as an immediate landmark for visitors and provides natural light to the entire building. The garden level hosts the conference center, shared meeting and training rooms, the restaurant, and the gym. On the upper floors, workspaces are divided between individual offices, small meeting rooms, and large co-working spaces (with private areas specifically designed for small group meetings or individual cubicles).

GEZE UK has revised and updated its popular and informative RIBA-approved CPD Safeguarding Pedestrians from Accidents at Power Operated Doorsets. The 40-minute seminar looks at the European standard EN 16005 in detail and explains the responsibilities of all involved to ensure safety and compliance at all stages of construction. It explains everything from activation distances for escape routes and non-escape routes; the danger points of automatic sliding, swing and revolving doors and how safety features such as finger guards and protection leaves can be used to reduce the risk of injury; and looks at revolving doors which are potentially the most dangerous and which received the most significant changes. But imagine a situation where the shelf or unit is very wide, and the brackets are not within easy reach of one another. You would have to press one lever first and then move across to the other. With heavy units or counters or loads, this is dangerous. Un locking one hinge but not the other could cause the whole thing to tilt, putting undue strain on the remaining locked bracket. If that gave way suddenly, the consequences for the person underneath could be terrify That’sing.

Extendable workbenches. Counter flaps. Collapsible shelves. Folding tables and chairs. Adjustable wall-mounted TV and speaker stands. What’s the one component you can find in them all? Folding brackets. Pick a setting - commercial, industrial, domestic, not to mention furniture man ufacture - and you will find a use for fold ing brackets. Combining the motion of a hinge system with support for horizontal loads, folding brackets add flexibility in how you utilise space. Across furniture and wall-mounted storage, they give you extra options to save space, improve access or add Theycapacity.areone of the great multi-purpose components. Which is why at Sugatsune we have gone to great lengths to extend our folding bracket range so we can offer solutions for every need and for every sit Letuation.the story unfold. One became three For us, it all started with the EB303, our original flagship folding bracket. A stain less steel hinged bracket with automatic position lock and a press release lever, the EB303 was designed as a heavy duty op tion capable (in pairs) of holding loads up to 150kg. That made it the most robust folding bracket available on the market, ideal for heavyweight counters or pop-up shelves in any setting that you need to bear heavy loads. In more recent years, we have extended the options available with two variations on the original EB303 design. The short er EB200 has a lower load capacity but is suitable for shallower shelves in more compact spaces. The ultra heavy duty EB317, meanwhile, is a longer bracket that can bear loads of up to 200kg, answering demand for extra strength in industrial set tings in particular.

Special features

As well as adding to the range to accom modate different depths of unit and differ ent load capacities, we’ve also pushed back the boundaries of folding bracket design with innovative solutions to solve a range of issues. Take this one, for example. Apart from the smallest, lightest loads, folding brackets are usually deployed in pairs. To fold a shelf or counter flap or table extension or what ever the bracket might be supporting, you have to press the lever on both brackets individually to unlock the hinge.

For this reason, the EBD soft close damper has become one of the most popular ac cessories we sell for our folding brackets. Like the EB-90, it’s an add-on you install between the brackets. When the lock le vers are released, the EBD controls the downwards motion of the shelf or flap in a smooth, safe manner using our patented LAPCON damper technology.

We also offer the EB-DA, a complete hinged bracket with a soft close mecha nism incorporated. This avoids the need to install an extra damper. But because of design limitations, it uses a different kind of damper mechanism, namely a gas piston which audibly releases air when activated and may therefore not be suitable for all Finally, situations.we also have the EB-F, an inno vation in folding brackets that locks in four different ‘up’ positions - at 90 degrees as standard, but also at 60, 70 and 80 de grees. This concept was developed for wall displays, for example for books, magazines or comics. Not only does it give the flexibil ity to adjust the angle for optimum visibility, like all of our other EB brackets, it means the display shelf can be folded down out of the way when not in use.

why, traditionally, installation instruc tions for lever release brackets have set limits on how wide apart they can go. To get round this and allow folding brackets to be installed further apart on wider units,

we developed the EB-90 - an interlock le ver that connects two brackets. Adding an EB-90 to a pair of EB brackets means the lock on both can be released by pressing the lever on just one.

Why Sugatsune Folding Brackets Have a Longer Shelf Life Than Most

As well as size and load variations, we also now sell all three folding bracket types in matt black as well as polished stainless steel finishes. Perfect for domestic and commercial interiors, you know what they say about black - it goes with anything. Because we know that great functionality doesn’t have to be at the expense of great looks.

The risks of releasing a bracket holding up a heavy counter flap or shelving unit are not just restricted to wide installations. Even when you can reach both levers, it’s easy to be caught unawares by the speed at which a heavy shelf would fall. That rais es the risk of injury and the risk of damage.

Automatically locks when flap is in opened position. Press lever to release the lock. 12 2 1 Japanese manufacturer of branded productsand Unit 635, Wharfedale Road, Winnersh Triangle, Wokingham, RG41 5TP │ Tel: 01189 272 955 Email: sales@sugatsune.co.uk │ www.sugatsune.co.uk FURNITURE, ARCHITECTURAL, MARINE AND INDUSTRIAL HARDWARE

WILLIAMS BUILDING

SERENA46

The building consists of four parts: an underground parking garage and loading dock; a merchandising center for prototype retail spaces; integrated design studios for multiple product categories; and a 12-story tower with shared amenities for all of campus. Integral to the design is the concept of flow -- a fluid state design strategy that is both efficient and enlightened. Flow facilitates unexpected connections and possibilities, both among designers and between disparate parts of the business. We created a variety of scales of gathering spaces to foster identity and connectivity, both indoor and outdoor. The building is organized around a principle that all designers for each brand within the business occupy a single level, while the services stack vertically between levels. In a first for Nike, products can move from sketch to prototype to final design to retail fixture all under one roof.

ARCHITECTS DESIGN

In its former life, the building site contained a parking lot and an access road to an adjacent building, all next to a beautiful wetland that the campus had turned away from. For us, regenerative design involves working with nature as an active partner towards both respectful site design and intelligent construction with responsible systems and materials. To better connect to the natural landscape, we buried the existing access road along with all packing and loading to minimize the visual presence of cars and trucks. In terms of massing, each of the building’s distinct bars, or wings, cascade to the south and feature inhabitable, interlacing green roof terraces that overlook the wetland. A 260 kW photovoltaic array screens rooftop mechanical units from view. Stormwater is collected and returned to the wetland.

The negative spaces created by the branching bars are treated with the same sensitivity as the interior spaces themselves. Courtyards, gardens, plazas, and a sunken tennis court break down the scale of the building and provide informal outdoor spaces for work, recreation, and relaxation. Natural light floods the workspaces along each bar from glazing on two sides and skylights above communicating stairs. Exposed concrete on the interior provides a raw, open palette in the design studios and expresses the building’s structure in key moments. DRAINAGE & PLUMBING

The challenge for pontoon supplier, Intermarine and lodge manufacturer, Trojan Timber, was to work out the most efficient waste discharge from the bathrooms and kitchens with least possible disruption to customers and marina staff. Pumps were always going to be needed in the lodges themselves, but collection and storage was the biggest stumbling block and ideas such as manual collection with a waste trolley or a separate floating tank were considered but rejected.

This involves early engagement with architects and designers to review their specifications and fire strategies. This service is to help prevent issues and conflicts during the construction stage, with issues around compartmentation and compliance with selected manufacturers details and British standards.

At each gateway, Global provide a mixture of desk top analysis and site visits to ensure that all design and actual build details are compliant, installed correctly and of good workmanship. The Fire Scrutineer records and assesses all aspects of the fire safety of the project to show due diligence and provide evidential, auditable records for the O&M manuals, in line with Regulation 38.

The Fire Scrutineer role concentrates on the three gateways of a construction project: Design, Construction and Pre-Occupation.

www.globaltechnicalservices.co.uk

Fire Scrutineer Stage 1 – Design Stage

ARCHETECH - PAGE 56 DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND PRE-OCCUPATION

The scope is divided into 3 main stages, which are all aligned with the proposed 3 Gateways under the new Building Regulations. The below schedule is set out by Global as a recommended minimum requirement to ensure compliance with Building Regulations. Global offer their services through these stages, giving the client peace of mind that the appropriate steps are in place for full compliance.

Fire Scrutineer Stage 3 – Pre-occupation

During this stage of the Golden Thread, Global are involved in the construction phase of the new build or refurbishment. We complete regular inspections of workmanship to make sure the installations are completed in line with designers/architects details and installed as per manufacturers tested solutions.

The pre-occupation stage involves the review of all commissioning certificates. This is to ensure everything is signed off in time for pre-occupation FRA, along with all documentation required for Regulation 38. This would be handed over to the Responsible Person after the building is complete.

FIRE SAFETY & SECURITY

Fire Scrutineer Stage 2 – Construction

In line with the proposed Independent Construction Assessor (ICA) framework, Global’s Fire Scrutineer role has developed following the Hackitt Working Group Review and subsequently the implementation of the new Building Safety Act. This highlighted the need for specialists, such as fire engineers, fire scrutineers and auditors to complete inspections and provide support throughout the Golden Thread. Global are able to provide specialist knowledge and information on all areas of fire safety with your projects. This role is necessary to provide reassurance and prevent loss of life in the event of a fire once the building is occupied, ensuring our clients, their staff, residents and guests have the best chance of survival if disaster strikes.

The roof structure is formed from concrete planks over steel trusses and has an existing felt waterproofing system nearing the end of its life. This is being overlaid with Soudal Foam and 100mm of Xtratherm foil-faced insulation, onto which the 6mm Magply boards are bonded using a polyurethane adhesive. The joints are sealed with Prokol’s special high elongation tape before the MonoSeal top layer is applied. This hydrophobic pure polymer waterproofing has the potential to accommodate 1500% elongation. Magply MOS boards present a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products. Richard Davis, third generation of the Davis Bros family business that started back in 1948, added: “What originally began as a coach building business has expanded over the years to do building, then shop-fitting and public sector projects. We have also fitted out hundreds of pubs in recent years, adding a number of different skillsets as we go. We’ve now become accredited installers of the Prokol systems, so we can carry out this work to our buildings on behalf of the management committee and will almost certainly undertake more roofing work in the future, so we have control of what is often a crucial part of the construction process. Sanding and priming Magply in our workshop, learning what is the right amount of sand to apply and with the two-part primer taking around an hour to cure. We purchased a thousand of the 6mm Magply sheets from M&J Roofing Services and the work is progressing well.”

is currently underway in Basildon, Essex, on an industrial building known as ‘The Gloucester’s, where a long established local building company Davis Bros is overlaying the old ‘northlight’ roof over its own premises and that of its neighbours with a Prokol specification that includes 6mm Magply.

Prokol UK offers training, project management and other support to clients across the construction industry with systems certified for flooring, tanking, sealing chemical bunds and even encapsulating asbestos sheeting, as well as for flat roofing – where it can provide guarantee periods of 30 or even 50 years.

A senior executive for Prokol UK, Richard Moore, commented: “We used to include OSB3 in our specifications, but because of needing to remove fire risks, we are only recommending Magply A1 noncombustible substrates now. In the training courses we run at our Product & Knowledge Centre in Essex, we are now ‘championing’ Magply to clients and contractors being trained to be approved installers; because of its characteristics, its fire performance and also its flatness. Once bonded down over the insulation it offers a far flatter substrate than OSB, or plywood which means the coverage you achieve is much more predictable, and at the same time eliminates the fire risk We would also encourage the use of 20mm Magply as the decking material for fire safety – effectively creating a non-combustible sandwich above and below the insulation.” SUBSTRATE ON WHICH TO INSTALL LIQUID APPLIED TREATMENTS

A Dutch manufacturer of fireproof flat roof coatings is recommending IPP Limited’s Magply boards as the ideal substrate on which to install its liquid applied treatments: based not only on their fire rating and stability, but also because of the material’s Aflatness.majorinstallation

“The need to improve on fire classifications has led some companies to uncompromisingly chase the A1 classification of non-combustible paint finishes on metal work. TALKING THICKNESS

“According to AkzoNobel, a leading coating supplier, if you are applying a polyester powder coating to a non-combustible metal to Qualicoat certified standards, then it cannot be above 25µm(microns) thick if you are claiming it achieves A1. Qualicoat states that to meet its Class 1 - 2 coating specification the minimum coating thickness should be 60µm and to meet Class 3 is a minimum of 50µm - so reaching A1 is unachievable using their certified coating system.”

EDUCATING THE INDUSTRY

Adek’s Technical Manager, Michael Roberts, explores if there’s a need to chase the A1 fire classification for Polyester Powder.

“For specifiers and powder coaters of architectural aluminium, the recognised European Standard is BS EN 12206. This standard goes hand-in-hand with Qualicoat, the internationally recognised specification for the production of high-quality coatings on aluminium products for architectural applications. These specifications also determine whether your product can be classified as A1.”

“Manufacturers are currently obsessed with achieving A1 status, whilst contractors believe only products achieving such standards are fit for purpose. And this is the problem – a lack of understanding about the difference between the A1 and A2 “A2classifications.productsare not sub-standard and by better understanding the differences between the A1 and A2 ratings, those involved in the construction industries will find they have a greater choice of products, without having to compromise on safety or quality.” www.a-dek.co.uk

TRANSFORMING AN ENCLOSED BUILDING INTO A LIBRARY WITH AND

PUBLIC LIBRARY

Photos: Yuchen Chao Photography

The Pingtung Public Library is an extension and renovation project of an existing cultural center, originally built in 1983 and located in the middle of the Millennium Park of Pingtung City. The main objective of the transformation is to introduce transparency and accessibility to the once hermetic building and its disoriented Atlandscaping.urbanscale, a transparent new lobby is proposed and attached to the western side of the existing building. It turns the architectural axis and approach 90 degree in order to make the library face the city directly. Instead of arriving through a series of formal boulevards and plazas, the new approach guides visitors through the forest and arcades before entering the library. Therefore, the architecture is more attuned to the physical and psychological conditions of contemporary library readers.

Location:

At architectural scale, by transforming the original entrance lobby into a wooden reading room, and its three levels of compact book storage into a bright, multi-functional atrium, the originally fragmented and congested building becomes fluid and identifiable. Two distinct staircases, one spiral and one stair-seating, complete the reader’s circulation path, while providing various seating types and opportunities along the journey. Taking advantage of surrounding park views, an open floor plan, and natural materiality, the library programming and furniture deployments can achieve individuality, flexibility, and a sense of intimacy that are important characteristics of contemporary libraries. The exterior of the original structure is now clad in white aluminum panels and louvers. An arcade extends from the original entrance to function as an in-between space between the reading room and the lawn, which was transformed from the depleted entrance plaza. The new landscape design connects the library seamlessly to its surrounding park, inviting citizens to use this new public space regardless of their purpose. sheet No. 69, Dalian Road, Pingtung

This is where the STEM Ambassadors scheme has a role to play. Both Richard Catt, CEO of the CFA, and Shaun Wadsworth, Training Manager, have signed up as STEM Ambassadors and are encouraging as many others as possible to get involved, going into schools and colleges and spreading the word about careers in the flooring “Nothingsector.helps

All apprentices are eligible for basic government funding to cover the cost of their college courses and CITB-registered companies can obtain additional grant funding and enhancements.

1. THE PIPELINE A key aim is to increase the number and quality of potential floor layers for companies to employ. Young people will be encouraged to consider a career in floor laying, while at the moment the CFA believes that the flooring industry too often plays second fiddle to other trades.

2. INCREASE DEMAND FROM EMPLOYERS

Full information is available on the STEM Ambassadors website and the CFA offers added value to members with support material and simple presentations that will help get the message across about opportunities in the sector.

4. IDENTIFY NEW INDUSTRY/FINANCIAL SUPPORT

attached. So CFA is looking to encourage flooring contractors to invest in offering opportunities for new entrants, of any age, to enter floorlaying.

3. EXPAND LOCALISED TRAINING PROVISION

The Contract Flooring Association (CFA) is launching a new campaign aimed to tackle a skills and labour shortage currently affecting the flooring sector. The CFA has calculated that there is a labour deficit of 16% currently, which has worsened from 11% before the Brexit, pandemic.Coronavirus, changes to standards, apprenticeships and funding have all contributed to this. Were it not for the work carried out by the CFA, the training bodies and manufacturers, the situation would be a lot worse. The CFA has been very active in this area for a number of years, especially with regarding to training, since in partnership with the National Institute of Carpet & Floorlayers, it runs the Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA) and also publishes an annual and thoroughly comprehensive Training Guide, which is available as a download from the CFA website.

However the CFA is leading its sector with the launch of Future Fitters and calls on contractors to join the campaign, both by taking on new entrants and by becoming STEM ambassadors.

The objective of the campaign is to identify and increase the number of floor fitters (of all ages) entering the UK commercial and domestic floor laying industry. It will do this by providing training and support for individuals to become skilled, competent and qualified Theinstallers.Future Fitters concept is based on four key pillars:

CONTRACT FLOORING ASSOCIATION TACKLES SKILLS & LABOUR SHORTAGE IN FLOORING SECTOR FLOORS

A key issue is that there are insufficient new entrant positions for floor laying roles, with structured training and qualifications

& FLOORING / FLOORING SHOW PREVIEW

Another barrier is the limited number of training providers available (particularly for apprentices) across the country. The CFA provides a point of contact for any college or commercial provider considering offering apprenticeship delivery, and will support them with practical advice, signposting and contacts.

The Future Fitters Guide is available as a download from the CFA website. This provides signposting to some of the main resources to help individuals understand the opportunities and benefits of a career in floor laying. It will also help flooring contractors identify and employ the most suitable candidates for their businesses.

The CFA is a leading trade association representing the flooring Industry. If you would like an application pack outlining the benefits of membership, please contact the CFA offices on 0115 941 1126, email info@cfa.org.uk or apply online at www.cfa.org.uk.

The CFA Training Guide includes a section on financial support available for trainees in floor laying, and CFA continues to seek new avenues and funding to help support the training and development of skills and labour. There are many courses offered by CFA manufacturer members which are free of charge, and all CFA members receive a discount of 15% off all training delivered by FITA.

Mastic asphalt is most commonly associated with roofing applications but due to its waterproofing properties, durability and versatility, it is being specified for more and more flooring Althoughprojects. mastic asphalt is one of the world’s oldest construction materials, it can sometimes be perceived as a onedimensional waterproofing product only available in a standard black finish. But mastic asphalt is being re-imagined as a highly relevant building material for today.

Mastic Asphalt Council contractor member Bell Asphalt has recently completed a stunning mastic asphalt flooring project at the Royal College of Art’s new £135m campus in Battersea, London, within the Battersea Creative Quarter. The 500m2 project was so impressive that it was shortlisted for the ‘Best Development and Hybrid’ Project at the MAC Awards 2022.

2.0 reduces the raw materials used during installation it is the most sustainable way to install carpet tiles and planks. Importantly, indoor air quality is dramatically improved through the elimination of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) associated with adhesive. As TractionBack® 2.0 is free of VOCs it is a much cleaner, healthier and safer method of modular carpet installation for the installers and the building’s occupants. TractionBack® 2.0 drives down the environmental impact of Milliken’s carbon neutral modular carpet even further, by minimising raw materials and eliminating potentially harmful VOCs. There is also less waste and packaging materials to dispose of at the end of an installation. In addition this clean installation method is ideally suited for recycling or re-use as the tile suffers no adhesive contamination. For further information visit www.millikencarpet.com

The new building was designed by Herzog & de Meuron and the mastic asphalt flooring system was chosen to reflect the college’s creativity, whilst ensuring a highly durable, low maintenance flooring solution.

CARPET RECYCLING UK BUILDS FLOORING SECTOR MOMENTUM AT HARROGATE

Exhibiting on Stand A45 at the 2022 Harrogate Flooring Show, Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) is inviting the sector to build on collaborative momentum and act to reduce textile flooring waste and resource usage ahead of any potential changes to UK legislation such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

funders have grown in number to 15, and support now comes from Balsan, Betap, Brintons Carpets, Condor Group, Cormar Carpets, ege Carpets, Furlong Flooring, Gradus, Headlam Group, IVC Commercial, Milliken, Modulyss, Rawson Carpet Solutions, Shaw and Tarkett. Many of them are acting voluntarily ahead of any legislation, including Cormar Carpets, which with assistance from CRUK, has helped their key customers to consider their waste minimisation and to create cost savings. For more information, email: info@carpetrecyclinguk.com or visit www.carpetrecyclinguk.com.

The not-for-profit association is urging manufacturers, flooring companies and recyclers to engage with its network to collaborate in putting sustainable processes in place that minimise waste, save on costs and keep resources in the supply chain longer. The aim is to consider reuse and recycling at the design stages and produce products for the circular economy and to implement processes to retrieve them for recycling. Adnan Zeb-Khan, CRUK Scheme Manager says: “Over the past year, we’ve recognised clear interest from the manufacturing sector in collaborating with our 119-strong network with a view to preparing for a potential future policy change where an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme could be a reality.

We have the opportunity to help shape any forthcoming schemes and perhaps even develop our own code of practice policies to reduce any impact on the sector going CRUK’sforward.”core

WHY SPECIFYING THE RIGHT FLOOR FOR DANCE AND THE PERFORMING ARTS IS SO IMPORTANT

Sports footwear is generally cushioned to protect against impact injuries and provides grip for the sports person. By contrast dancers need more absorption or cushioning on landing from jumps. Their footwear varies according to dance style and doesn’t cushion landings. Dancers also need the right degree of traction from the dance Harlequinsurface.works extensively with dance scientists and biomechanics experts to investigate the effects of the choice of dance floor on dancer performance and injury and to research and develop floors that minimise these risks. That is why Harlequin is recognized as the world’s leading authority on dance floors. Established in the UK over 45 years ago, it remains the industry choice for the most prestigious dance and performing arts companies, theatres, venues and schools, production companies and events across the globe. As an enlightened manufacturer, Harlequin continues to work with dance industry specialists to research and develop floors that dancers want to dance on.

To continue offering the highest quality floors to the world’s performers, Harlequin’s Cascade vinyl performance floor now has added BioCote© antimicrobial protection. BioCote© antimicrobial technology is manufactured into the Harlequin Cascade vinyl creating a dance surface upon which microbes such as bacteria and viruses cannot survive. The result is a floor which is easier to keep hygienically clean, reducing the risk of cross contamination and infection by working constantly to reduce the presence of microbes on the surface of the floor. BioCote© is also proven to offer protection for the expected lifetime of the product – it will not wear out or wash off, ensuring long-term defence against harmful microbes. There are some critical factors that distinguish the requirements of dancers from those of sports played on sports floors. Many sports require a firm floor which allows balls to bounce predictably.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 70 THE WORLD PERFORMS ON HARLEQUIN FLOORS

Making the correct choice of dance floor is essential when designing a performance space. Whether it’s a world-renowned dance company, university, secondary school, or local dance school, the dance studio is a dancers work environment and the floor a fundamental tool for their work. The correct dance floor makes an important contribution to the safe performance of dancers without the risk of slips and falls or longer-term stress injuries. Floors developed for commercial or sports applications do not offer the key benefits dancers need.

electric fire and stove range offer you the ability to switch on the heat for localised heating in the colder months, but also lets you enjoy the visuals alone, perfect for the warmer months.

INSTANT HEAT

ENJOYABLE WITH OR WITHOUT HEAT

Requiring little more setup than connecting to mains electricity via an ordinary three-pin plug socket, an electric log burner is ultraeasy to install, providing instant ambience and heat at the touch of a button. Freestanding versions can generally be moved from room to room, simply plugging into the mains. Hang-on-the-wall models can also be hung in different rooms if required. Electric fires that have been recessed into the wall may need a bit more installation work to remove or refit, but ultimately all require the same simply plug-and-go connection to get up and running.

GOING ELECTRIC WITH A GAZCO STOVE OR FIRE

Electric fires and stoves come in different shapes and sizes, and many offer log-effect fuel effects. For a more traditional log burning look, an electric wood burner such as the Chesterfield 5 electric stove emulates a real glowing fire. Alternatively, electric fires such as the eReflex present a more contemporary take on a wood burning look, with realistic logs yet offering a whole spectrum of coloured LED lighting for expressing yourself.

One major benefit from an electric fire or stove is that many now offer alternative fuel effects.

Noise pollution is often reported as a major annoyance felt by the general population. Determining the causes and characteristics of noise pollution is a social requirement in places where there is constant ambient noise (cinemas, exhibitions, etc.). This noise is at the origin of many disorders affecting human activities and causes stress and fatigue. Barrisol ® proposes microperforated stretch ceiling to improve the acoustic well-being of places for an optimal comfort of the occupants. The Barrisol Acoustics® line is composed of microperforated membranes which absorb sound and reduce noise pollution in public or private spaces. These membranes reduce the resonance effect and improve acoustic environments. Barrisol® offers various acoustic solutions: Acoustic Light®, Acoustic 3D, Acoustic Mirror®, Acoustic Clim®, Acoustic , Acoustic Print your mind®, Acoustic Frames and Artolis® Frames. The principle of absorption used in Barrisol® sheets Barrisol® acoustic solutions use the principle of absorption. This principle works by reducing the intensity of the reflection of sound waves in a room. The air movement induced by a sound source is then partially absorbed by the fabric which reflects only part of it, breaking the reverberation effect (not to be confused with acoustic insulation which cuts off the transmission of noise from one place to another).

DESIGN LONDON SHOW PREVIEW

ARCHETECH - PAGE

Design London, the largest official destination for contemporary design at London Design Festival, returns to the Magazine London in North Greenwich with its second edition between 21 – 24 September 2022. The show made its debut in 2021, attracting over 12,000 UK and international visitors. The show is set to double its floor space this year, where architects and interior designers can source cutting-edge furniture, kitchens and bathrooms, lighting and architectural fittings all under one roof. It brings together a compelling line-up of established and emerging design brands from around the world; from global manufacturers – including HAY, Urbantime, Zeitraum, Tuuci, Wewood, Ton, Dare Studio and Ago – that are joining the show for the first time, to returning exhibitors such as Artemide, Christian Watson, Van Rossum, Bert Plantagie and Penta Light to name a few.

Cera-Marle added, “The UK is one of the key countries for specification internationally, and Design London is all about championing design excellence, along with originality, innovation and diversity. Building on last year’s success, we look to bring an even more exciting, content-rich programme to our show –which will double in size – this year.”

World and Korea Messe with the support of the Ministry of SMEs and Start-ups and the Korea Federation of SMEs, the Korean Pavilion will be home to some of the country’s best small- to medium-sized design companies. Products on show range from ceramics, furniture, home accessories and show is the Portuguese Association of Wood and Furniture Industries (AIMMP). Its core mission is to represent, promote and protect Portuguese companies from five divisions that make up the wood and furniture sector: wood cutting, felling, sawing and wood packing; wood derivatives and energy; carpentry and alike; furniture and alike; export, import and distribution of wood and derivatives. At Design London, the Portuguese Pavilion will comprise 13 leading brands –showcasing a range of products that are 100% designed and manufactured in Portugal.

Similarly, 12 sustainable and eco-conscious furniture and home decoration brands have been selected to represent the Thai Pavilion. In response to the urgent issue of global climate change, the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) of the Royal Thai Government has launched the “Thailand Be the ChanGe” initiative – highlighting some of the most forward-thinking Thai creative businesses working within the Government’s Bio-CircularGreen (BCG) model. At the show, the Pavilion will showcase a curated portfolio of homeware, furniture and lifestyle pieces that has been created to meet the rising global demand for more sustainable and eco-conscious products.

Last but not least, Design London 2022 boasts a whole host of collaborations – from sought-after brands to experiential installations. Some of the highlights include lighting centrepieces by Ago and Haberdashery; a graphic feature by Lois O’Hara to welcome visitors; and an exclusive bar from Kyrö Distillery Company – the show’s official whisky and gin partner – to mark the brand’s 10th anniversary. Situated in the main thoroughfare of the event and designed by fellow Finnish brand Vaarnii, the Kyrö bar is set to be constructed entirely out of pine – a “brutally Finnish” masterpiece to complement the all-rye distillery’s “brutally Finnish” spirits. What’s more, Versarien – which develops and manufactures advanced material technologies, with the purpose of improving the environment – has teamed up with British artist and designer, Steuart Padwick to create a 3-D printed installation at Design London. Using 100% cement free concrete reinforced with Graphene, this special feature – titled Island Steps – has been designed as a playful oasis which can be located both indoors and outdoors. Not only does 3-D printing significantly reduce the volume of concrete needed, the special mortar being cement free also reduces the carbon footprint by over 70%.

Meanwhile, this year’s event welcomes the second edition of Discussions at Design London – its thought-provoking talks programme that comprises headline keynotes, trend forecasts and panel discussions with a range of high-profile industry experts, influencers and thought leaders. Brand consultant Katie Richardson returns to curate the series, which runs daily throughout the show and offers an insight into future trends while addressing the most pressing topics within design, architecture and the wider creative Sponsoredindustries. by Kohler, the talks see some of the best industry and household names descend on the show and will open with internationally acclaimed designer, Lee Broom. Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis; sustainability advocate Jay Blades MBE, best known for presenting the hit TV series on the BBC, The Repair Shop; and multidisciplinary artist Marco Oggian, will also feature as speakers for 2022.

“LASVIT has been working on this project from 2016 until now, and it was really unique for us due to the need for precise craftsmanship of the glass parts, but also of the hand-made metal

Studio Sofield is famous for their ultra-luxurious residences and their frequent use of unusual materials. They chose LASVIT to accompany the interior with extraordinary lighting, as well as bespoke sculptures. Although LASVIT is most well-known for master glassworking, most of the pieces for 111 West 57th Street are made of metal combined with glass pieces.

Developing such a grand vision for the property took a great deal of work. In a collaborative effort between JDS Development Group, Property Markets Group, and Spruce Capital Partners; SHoP Architects, who designed the exterior; and Studio Sofield

LASVIT DESIGNED DOZENS OF UNIQUE GLASS AND METAL PIECES FOR THE WORLD’S SKINNIEST SKYSCRAPER

In its prime, great pianists used to meet at Steinway Hall on West 57th Street to practice together. Even legendary Rachmaninoff loved to play in this sanctuary for pianists, alongside the great virtuoso Vladimir Horowitz. Almost one hundred years after its first opening in 1925, the building got a breath of new life from several of New York’s top developers. LASVIT, the global leader in daring spacial and lighting experiences, provided this one-of-a-kind building with unique pieces designed and hand-crafted in Northern Bohemia, adding the shining final touches for the building which will once again host New York’s high society.

architects taking on the interior architecture, 111 West 57th Street is a monument to impressive design. Studio Sofield created the concept with respect to the building’s history while bringing a contemporary twist, delicately tempering opulence with elegance.

A DUET OF GLASS AND METAL

The glass vases for the porte cochere are not only unique in their design, but also in their fine craftsmanship. Each vase contains metal palm leaves, and weighs around 880 pounds at almost 30 feet tall. The urns were created from several pieces of fused glass perfectly aligned together. LASVIT developed special technology to precisely grind the glass pieces. The two lamps in porte cochere echo the visual rhythm and the striking urns.

PAGE 89 - ARCHETECH pieces produced in a blacksmith’s workshop. It was one of the first projects where our work was conceived as an integral part of the architecture – handcrafted cornices in the forge, or wrought iron grilles that could only be produced after the building had been surveyed. The lobby’s centerpieces are two giant vases, which are nearly three meters tall and weigh more than one ton each,” says Pavel Koudelka, Partner and Managing Director responsible for LASVIT’s North American presence. Throughout the building, there are over 30 different LASVIT lighting pieces, sculptures, and installations. The first pieces are placed at the porte cochere, and are one of the first things seen when approaching the building.

Creating the unique lamps placed in the vestibule and corridors was a challenging artistic experience, replicating lamps initially installed in the early 1920s.

A RHAPSODY OF LIGHT FOR A MONUMENT TO MUSIC

The building also contains bespoke lighting installations by LASVIT Senior Designer Jana Ružicková. The South Oval features an installation created by LASVIT designer Dan Jacek, creator of many classic chandeliers, formed from a special blackened metal requested by the client. “111 West 57th street was a collaboration where the client had a clear vision of the decorative art features with considerable respect to heritage. Mainly, my part was translating it into reality through my knowledge of glass and metal design and Lasvit’s craftsmanship. It was a great learning experience and honor to work on this NYC landmark,” says Jana Ružicková, LASVIT Senior TheDesigner.original

The 111 West 57th residential skyscraper is the second tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere, reaching a whopping 1,428 feet, including a 300-foot decorative steel crown. It has a height-to-width ratio of 24:1, officially making 111 West 57th Street the skinniest skyscraper in the world. Residents needn’t worry that the building may blow over or snap during a storm, as the structure is made of the strongest concrete in the world, according to SHoP Architects. www.lasvit.com

LASVIT’s lighting and sculptures emphasize the interior design and accompany the true jewels of this space – the pianos. The building originally housed an iconic collection made by Steinway & Sons, and JDS Development now plans to fill the house with music once Withagain.Carnegie Hall just across the street, the area just south of Central Park has been recognized as the nation’s leading center of culture and classical music, and Steinway Hall stands as a designated landmark and “a timeless monument to classical music and architecture.”

Steinway building was an icon of New York City; the Steinway family commissioned Warren & Westmore, the minds behind Grand Central Terminal, to design their townhouse. Redesigning such a significant building with respect to its history was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and JDS Development stated “the design for 111 West 57th Street represents a commitment to the quality, history and craftsmanship behind New York City’s classic skyscrapers, while taking advantage of the latest in technology to push the limits of engineering and fabrication.”

TROLDTEKT TAKES GOLD

PAGE 93 - ARCHETECH

Since 2012, Danish acoustic wood wool manufacturer Troldtekt has been leading the way with its sustainable practices and leadership. An early adopter of the Cradleto-Cradle design concept, the company has focused on its material health, reutilisation, energy, water and social responsibility winning recognition and numerous green awards over the Theyears.adoption of Futurecem™ has now further enhanced the manufacturing process and elevated Troldtekt to Cradle-to-Cradle Gold Certification. In addition, and being both FSC® and PEFC™ certified, the company has set strict environmental targets for its manufacture and products culminating in a transparent roadmap in its annual CSR reports. This has led the company to be one of Europe’s most vociferous advocates for sustainable design and one which contributes positively to BREEAM, WELL, LEED and DGNB-Certifications. Futurecem™ is a new patented cement from Aalborg Portland. Absorbing more CO2 than it creates during production, its incorporation into Troldtekt’s wood wool panels gives Troldtekt acoustic panels their strength, durability and fire-protective properties without the use of harmful chemicals. This combination also means that Troldtekt’s panels have a negative carbon footprint right up until it is time for them to be disposed of or recycled – a phenomenal result. Troldtekt’s natural and inherently sustainable panels offer high sound absorption and tactile surface, coupled with high durability and low-cost lifecycle performance. Available in various sizes and in four grades, from extreme fine to coarse, the panels can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. A wok is a cooking pot originating from China, the hump in the middle of the pediment looks like the handle of the wok, then it is called Wok Wall, which helps to block the wind or the fire, and serves as the main bearing structure of a house.

THE LEVITATED CURTAIN

A SPACE WHERE THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR ARE CONNECTED

ARCHITECTS CASE STUDY

The architect abstracted the shape of a wok wall and applied it to the east and west elevations of Xi Hall, by which two wok-wallshaped openings were created, connecting the interior to the outdoor landscape. Between the walls with the special openings, there is a curved roof sloping towards the grassland in the north like an elegantly draped curtain.

Located in a resort on the outskirts of Guangzhou, the Levitated Curtain is an iconic building for wedding ceremonies and public events. In Guangzhou, weddings usually start at 7 am, but the ceremony only begins around 6 pm, then Xi Hall will serve as a multifunctional space for dining, photo shooting, reception, and several other purposes during the day, and becomes a sacred place for the wedding ceremony at nightfall. When there are no weddings, Xi Hall which sits in the center of the resort will be a perfect location for sightseeing and allow public events for different occasions.

Connected. As a place for gathering and sharing, the architect looks forward to bringing more flexibility to the space to connect the activities inside the hall and the fabulous landscape outside. Eventually, it is a completely open space, adding a romantic touch to the spirituality of nature with a modest but welcoming gesture. The architect also designed an Ω-shaped corridor attached to the hall, echoing the wok-wall-shaped openings while connecting the hall with the nature behind it. Along the path, people will witness the important moment of a wedding when the father is taking his daughter to the groom. At nightfall, the setting sun cast its golden lights through the wok-wall-shaped openings to the couple as well as every corner of the space. The open structure enables Xi Hall

The structure under the ceiling is painted white, almost invisible if you look at the building from the east or the west perspective; When the lights come into the hall through the U-shaped glass wall, the entire building is calmly“floating” above the ground. When the night falls, the space is illuminated from the inside, then the sense of volume is highlighted with the light, making the architecture a Kongming lantern that is about to levitate, bringing blessings to nature and the people here. The curtain-like streamlined roof endows the building with an embracing gesture, holding mountains, forests and rivers into its arms, thus a space of spirit and nature was created, allowing more air and light to flow into the building, and bringing out a demeanor of floating in the Openstillness.and

TREX ENHANCE® When it comes to decking materials, many consumers limit their options due to preconceived perceptions about the cost of composite decking. A great way to address this concern is by quantifying the long-term value of a composite deck. The cost – and time – required to maintain a traditional wood deck can far exceed the upfront investment in a high-performance composite deck that will last for decades and retain a like-new appearance with just an occasional soap-and-water cleaning. Make sure your clients understand and consider the cumulative expense of powerwashing, sanding, staining and painting a wood deck – not to mention the value of all the time they get to spend enjoying the deck rather than working on it. Once you’ve shown them the math, customers are often surprised to learn that wood decking can be more expensive than composite in the long Today’srun. wide range of offerings and price points make it even easier to convert customers to wood alternatives. BEST PRACTICE FOR LIGHTING SCHEMES

ARCHETECH - PAGE 106

www.lumenalights.com

Light should be kept to the areas where it’s needed, without encroaching onto sensitive spaces such as natural habitats. Most luminaires are fitted with glare shields to reduce large, unwanted spills of light. Designs with a downward light emission are extremely beneficial, only illuminating the required surface below, minimizing both obtrusive light and glare. Huge care must also be taken around beam intensity. A high lumen output along a busy pathway at 5pm rush hour is helpful, but the same output at 1am is unnecessary, often causing more harm than good. To combat this, dimming sequences are common practice in high-end, public lighting. For example, Lumena’s solar-powered path lights operate a gradual dimming sequence from 100% at dusk, down to 30% during the early hours of the morning. This technique not only benefits the ecosystem but also saves energy. Specifiers and suppliers have a responsibility to keep light pollution to a minimum. Referring to a luminaire’s photometric data ensures a light fitting has the desired distribution and intensity. ILP member, Lumena Lights, has this data available for much of their commercial lighting, including solar path lights and solar street lights, with more on the way. Contact them today with your requirements and they will be happy to help.

When planning lighting schemes for public spaces, often the ‘less is more’ approach is a good starting point. The cost of overilluminating a space isn’t just financial. Specifiers must consider negative impacts of light pollution on wildlife, as well as on human health. Variables such as colour temperature, intensity, glare and positioning all have an effect on biodiversity. As a rule of thumb, warmer colour temperatures (<4000K) are the best option where wildlife is concerned. Nocturnal wildlife relies on darkness to survive. Bluer colour temperatures which mimic daylight are a huge disruptor of circadian behaviour, in humans and wildlife, producing up to 3 times more visual sky glow.

A common myth is that LEDs with warmer colour temperatures (<4000K) emit a lower light output than their ‘colder’ counterparts. However, innovation in LED technology means this is no longer the case. In fact, in Lumena’s professional solar ranges, the light output between the two is equivalent. Some luminaires even come with a remote control to adjust light output to a level that suits the task in hand. Another important factor to consider is light distribution. What IS being illuminated compared to what SHOULD be illuminated?

GREEN COPPER AURORA

EMBRACING A STUNNING

This contemporary cottage, built in a stunning seashore location on the Lyngen peninsula – a protected heritage area well within the Arctic Circle and one of Norway’s National Parks – is defined by its respect for nature and restrained material palette of Nordic Green copper clad walls and roofs, seamless glazing and timber.

PANORAMA ROOFING, CLADDING & FACADES

Snorre Stinessen Architecture’s design for the new Aurora Lodge retreat aims to embrace the stunning panorama across the sea and a close connection with nature, while retaining privacy. A small flat area within the natural landscape was perfectly suited to accommodate this low-intervention building. All vegetation was preserved or re-planted, leaving the original trees virtually untouched. A small creek has been preserved and now runs under the building. The lodge consists of a main building with central terrace, a separate annexe suite and a sauna across the creek.

ANGULAR COPPER CANOPY

The copper enclosure contrasts with wide-open views of the surrounding nature – including the northern lights in winter –through extensive, seamless glazing. The same approach is taken with the two outbuildings, also enveloped with Nordic Green copper. Careful detailing and installation have resulted in graceful transformations between copper planes. In terms of materiality, Snorre Stinessen explained: “Copper was chosen for its durability – particularly close to the sea and with air salinity – but also for its permanence, quality and beauty. The fact that copper is a natural material and, of course, 100% recyclable are for me important factors – and certainly its longevity is often overlooked. The Nordic Green pre-patinated copper colour is

Stone paved steps set in the ground lead along the creek and amongst the trees, past the annexe to the entrance. A continuation of the entrance, and just over the creek, lies the central outdoor terrace, positioned between the kitchen/dining room and the living room, below the main roof. The creek continues its flow just beyond the concrete terrace floor with its own distinct contribution to the sounds of nature.

The Nordic Copper range also includes Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ and Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper, which offers lighter or darker colour shades. Snorre Stinessen added: “We are just about to start another new building in the same area as Aurora Lodge, although in somewhat different surroundings. Here, we are still using Aurubis copper – but this time Nordic Brown”.

The extensive Nordic Green, Nordic Blue and Nordic Turquoise ranges offer patinated copper surfaces straightaway that would otherwise take many years to develop in the environment. They have properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. As well as the solid patina colours, ‘Living’ surfaces are available for each, with variable intensities of patina flecks revealing some of the dark oxidised background material. Copper alloys are growing in popularity as well, including Nordic Bronze and Nordic Brass – which can also be supplied preweathered. The innovative Nordic Royal is an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving it a rich golden through-colour and making it very stable. It retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen over time, as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the atmosphere to give a matt finish. A wide choice of Nordic Decor mechanically applied surface treatments is also available for various surfaces and alloys, particularly suited to interior applications.

OTHER COPPER FINISHES

Conceptually, the design is based on a natural platform in the landscape providing a continuous floor for the main building, both internally and externally. This platform is then protected by an angular canopy, forming the eastern wall and roof – clad entirely in Nordic Green copper – providing high indoor ceilings.

L’École Internationale Edward Steichen is a high school in Clervaux, Luxembourg, with room for 650 students. Jonas Architectes Associés won the assignment for construction and devised not only a plan for the buildings, but also an idea for decorative facades and sun protection. RMIG ImagePerf made it possible to realise their vision. As the school is more or less surrounded by woodland on all sides, a striking photo of a spring forest from a nature park in the Ardennes was chosen as the template for the facade image.
