PROJECT 1 THE CONSERVATION RESEARCH DESIGN OF WUHAN UNIVERSITY HISTORICAL BUILDINGS 03/2015-07/2015, 8th Semester, Academic, Group Work * LOCATION: Wuhan, Hubei, China * PARTNER: Xin Yan * ROLE&CONTRIBUTION: Survey, facades, sections, analysis and design concept * SUPERVISOR: Qiaohui Tong ( qhtong@whu.edu.cn )

DESIGN DESCRIPTION Wuhan University, located at Luojia Hill, with palatial buildings blending the Chinese and Western style is commonly regarded as one of the most beautiful and oldest university in China. The early architecture of Wuhan University(26 buildings in total, 1930-1936), were designed by F. H. Kales (1899–1979), is announced as one of Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (the 5th batch, 25/06/2001) by State Council of the People's Republic of China. This project is a conservation research and design of former Faculty of Arts‘ office building (now belongs to Faculty of Mathematics).

THE CONSERVATION RESEARCH DESIGN // RENEW DESIGN REPAIRATION INSIDE WALL & FLOOR

FACILITY RENEW AIR-CONDITION OUTDOOR UNITS

The terrazzo floor of 1F and corridors is badly damaged. And the bare wall is easy to get dirty and peeled. The repairation is aiming to update this awkward status by using reversible technique. FLOOR: 1.Cleaning 2. Mending 3.Paving

Now, the disordered air-condition outdoor units effected the facade badly. For a historical building, a designed outdoor units system is indispensable.

PROJECT 2 THE OFFICE BUILDING EXPANSION PROJECT OF BRIDGE SCIENCE RESEARCH INSTITUTE (BSRI) 05/2015-07/2015, 8th Semester, Academic, Individual Work * LOCATION: Wuhan, Hubei, China * SUPERVISOR: Jing Zheng ( jingzheng2015@qq.com ) Floor Area: 3210 m² Building Height: 23.6 m Floors: 4 Stucture: frame + glass curtain wall

DESIGN DESCRIPTION Wuhan Bridge Science Research Institute (BSRI), a branch of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd., is located in the intersection of Jianshe Avenue and West -Han Road just near by the Second Ring Road downtown Wuhan city. The available site for the new expanded office building includes a three-story ( partial four-story with an add -itional warehouse on ground floor) frame-structure building in good condition, a dilapidated two-story frame-structure building and the space between them. The main concept is preserving the frame structure of the three-story one and demolishing the shabby one to make two four-story unit. Then creating a glass curtain wall systerm joints them with a fun -ctional courtyard. Meanwhile, new activity space breaks the original dull experiment atmosphere.

PROJECT 3 THE KINDERGARTEN DESIGN IN BRITISH CONSESSION 03/2013-05/2013, 5th Semester, Academic, Individual Work * LOCATION: Tianjin, China * SUPERVISOR: Qiaohui Tong ( qhtong@whu.edu.cn ) Site Area: 2500 m² Plot Ratio: 0.72 Floor Area: 1800 m² Floor: 2

DESIGN DESCRIPTION This course design requires a full-time 6-classes ( 25 kids / class ) community kindergarten and provides the option to freely choose a site place, aiming to experience doing architecture design under specific context. I pick the British Consession ( Tianjin ) as one ideal location, where extremely interests and is familiar to me. It's an exciting challe -nge to do the design in a famous historical area with strict restrictions. To find a good balance of modern and historical style a great quantity of field investigation have been done. Reminiscence and home-like are the key words to this project. And dealing with the limited site area and seeking for good natural lighting solution are the difficult parts.

PROJECT 4 THE RURAL HOUSING CLUSTER DESIGN BASED ON COURTYARD+TOURIST ECONOMY DEVELOPMENT MODE 04/2014-07/2014, 6th Semester, Academic, Individual Work * LOCATION: Wuhan, Hubei, China * SUPERVISOR: Yan Yuan ( yuanyan@whu.edu.cn ) Site Area: 15000 m² Floor Area: 7850 m²

Plot Ratio: 0.52 Greening Rate: 0.37

Dwelling Building: 29 Public Building: 5

DESIGN DESCRIPTION The site location, is only 5km away from The Ancient Battlefield of Red Cliffs ( 208 AD, now is a National AAAA Tourist Attraction), in a city that is fam -ous for natural hot-spring, commercial water plants ( such as lotus ) and freshwater-aquaculture. Based on the Courtyard+Tourist Economy Develop -ment Mode, which is highly encouraged by local government, this project tries to provide an effective living pattern for residents' income raise and life quality improvement. Using green energy efficiency methods can radically reduce the further cost and show tourists an environmental-friendly rural life.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION Caidian district is one of the six main area groups of Wuhan "1+6 Development Pattern". In the future plan, there will build a medium-sized city of 500,000 people. It is an important base for industry, township enterprises and private-sectors transfer from the Wuhan main city. Chengguan Town is the political, economic and cultural center of Caidian area, plays a effective role to draw youth labor resources from immigrating to metropolis. Lotus Lake area is the old heart-part of Chengguan town, aiming to renew it into a lively residence community with good supporting infrastructure in this project.

BRIEF OF MOTIVATION

I have drawn a copy of the I Amsterdam Sign in the sunset when I saw it in a travel magazine as a teenager. I set my mind that I would be there one day. Then I fulfilled it and wandered on the Museumplein in the summer of 2012. At that time, the Rijksmuseum was under its 10-years grand renovation process, so I left with pity. Luckily, I involved in the Utrecht University’s Exchange Program at the year that the Rijksmuseum reopened. Until the 4th and last visit to it, I came across a wonderful book, Restoration and Transformation of a National Monument by Paul Meurs and Marie-Thérèse van Thoor, in the museum shop. This book introduced me to the RMIT in Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of the Delft University of Technology for the very first time. I corrected my wrong impression that the architecture education in the TUD is pure high-tech and parameterized from this book. From then on, TUD became my dream school.

Certainly, my favorite specialization is the Heritage & Architecture (RMIT). As soon as I transferred into Architecture Department, I realized I was not only interested in architecture’s design but also its history and theory. The research field that I concerned mostly is architecture conservation and renovation. Thus during the architecture design courses in my undergraduate, I paid a lot of attention to site analysis and context background digging. Successively, I did a design in the historical area, an expansion and renovation project and a conser -vation research design (see project 1-3 in my portfolio). Probably owing to the long history of religious tolerance since the Dutch Golden Age, regeneration works of the religious building are quite a lot in the Netherlands. I would like to learn more about this novel topic. Compare to the form of buildings, I always

care. more about the users’ needs and the relationship between human and space. The dwelling building is the most influential building type to people’s life. Most of the Chinese residential buildings are anonymous from outside to inside while the Dutch dwellings surprised me with its resident-friendly plan and well-designed appearance. Riding from my landlord’s house, Zeist, to Utrecht Centre was an enjoyable architecture tour to me. Along this way, I can see hundreds of nice houses and apartments, even the Rietveld Schröder House. It will be honored to study in The Architecture and Dwelling studio. As a museum-goer, I love exhibition and exhibition building heartily. For this reason, I am glad to be one of The Architecture of the Interior and The Architecture and Public Building specializations, when they provide projects related to the exhibition.
