2018 HONOR ROLL THE BRAY COMMUNITY
The “Bray community” comprises of many—residents, students, community artists, volunteers, donors and more. And what brings them all together is simple… a passion for a place and people committed to the enrichment of the ceramic arts. DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE At first glance, our annual Honor Roll publication is simply a list of names. But those names represent the most important people in the greater Bray “family”—you, our supporters and volunteers. You continue to be so very generous with your time, enthusiasm and financial support and the result is that the Bray continues to be a place where artists of all ages and backgrounds can explore and create in ceramics. This publication also gives us the chance to reflect upon some of the events from the prior year. Bittersweet among those is the annual “changing of the guard” with our resident artists. Each year, we say farewell to those residents who are finishing their time here and moving on to the next stage in their careers. In 2018, we said goodbye to a dynamic and energetic group of long-term residents: Nicholas Danielson, MyungJin Kim, Ling Chun, Anton Alvarez, Noah Riedel and En Iwamura; summer residents Jaime Bates Slone, Justin Donofrio, Shane Harris, Jason Hartsoe, Jackie Head, Didem Mert, Julie Moon, Susan O’Byrne, Karl Schwiesow and Taili Wu; and short-term residents Dawn Candy and Lynn Peters. But, as we send off one group, another arrives. Please join me in welcoming long-term residents: Jessica Brandl, Ben Carter, Iva Haas, Kelsey Duncan, Kelly Stevenson and Stuart Gair. We are excited to have them here working hard in the studio. In 2018, we made a number of important improvements to the Bray’s campus, which included a new ADA accessible ramp to the summer warehouse gallery, the addition of a cross-draft soda kiln and upgrades to the wood-fired train kiln. Perhaps the most exciting development on campus was that we completed and moved into a newly renovated Administrative Center in the original Pottery studio building. “The Pottery”, originally built in 1952, began the Bray residency program
and for many years served as resident and Director’s studios, a classroom, and the main glazing and firing facilities at the Bray. Those needs were met in new ways with the construction of the David and Ann Shaner Studio Complex in 2004 and the Bray Education Center in 2017. The Pottery has now become the new home for the Bray Staff to execute the mission and various programs of the Bray. The Bray Staff are a dedicated group of professionals who for many years have been working in separate buildings, sheds and garages repurposed from the old brick factory. The many individuals that have worked at the Bray have supported the mission by publicizing the work of our artists, developing educational programming, providing clay and materials, maintaining the equipment and securing financial support. Today, it is fitting to have all of the Staff working in the original Pottery building as a cohesive team to support the resident artists and provide visitors with a welcoming entry to the Bray. Thank you, again, for your commitment to the artists and staff working at the Bray. The next time you visit, please be sure to visit the galleries to see what the new residents are working on and stop by to see us in the new Pottery Administration Building. -Steven Young Lee, Resident Artist Director
