Director's Message As we welcome spring on the Bray campus, I want to reflect on the unusual and powerful events of 2020 and how the Bray is moving forward to better serve our ever-growing community. I want to highlight accomplishments and outcomes that arose from the pandemic and the work we have ahead of us, at the Bray and in our personal lives, to ensure we are actively creating opportunities for equal exposure in the field of ceramic art. I also want to offer my sincere gratitude to the many people who helped the Bray by generously donating their time, creativity, financial and moral support to sustain our mission over the last year. As a nonprofit, the Bray relies on the support of individuals, foundations and businesses to promote excellence in clay through the residency program, education, gallery, clay materials and technology. We are grateful to you for your commitment and belief in the Bray. Thank you! “As a resident, the Bray has allowed me to develop my work intuitively through daily practice, often by exploring new materials. The Bray is an amazing place of inspiration where my work continues to grow.” –Yeh Rim Lee, Current Bray Resident In years prior to the pandemic, we were fortunate to welcome many makers to Montana annually to work in various studios. In 2020, with a much different landscape, the Bray campus was much quieter, but the studios were still active with our masked and socially distanced longterm residents including Jason Bige Burnett, Katy Drjiber, Raven Halfmoon, Chase Travaille, Nicholas Weddell, Alessandro Gallo, Yeonsoo Kim, Yeh Rim Lee, and Candice Methe. For our summer residents, while we were unable to bring them to campus safely, we did launch our first-ever remote residency to provide resources and support to a cohort of talented artists. Through this inaugural effort, we welcomed Ryan Caldwell, Gabby Gawreluk, Clara Hoag, Kelly McLaughlin, Montse Piñero, Jinblossom Plati, Josh Scott, and Jessie Vala. The support of artists is at the heart of all we do at the Bray and we are eager to watch and support the next stages of their careers. The Bray has long been a place where collaboration and creativity are inspired by bringing together artists who have the time and space to work and to connect. 2020 was a year of continued campus construction and facility upgrades to finalize our capital campaign in the year ahead. ADA improvements continued on campus to ensure people of all abilities have access to work and visit, including new ramps to the Shaner courtyard, pushbutton access to doors, accessible amenities in the resident kitchen and checkout counters in the Gallery. Although many Bray staff worked remotely in 2020, it was a time of intense teamwork, reimagining, and leaning into creative solutions to keep the Bray afloat and moving into the future. Both staff and board completed a Strategic Plan to guide us forward while realigning our mission and values and prioritizing race and gender equity as an imperative to ground our work.
While classes, workshops and public events remain on hold due to the pandemic, we are using this time to assess and rebuild our systems and infrastructure. This has included investment in outreach and new partnerships, evaluating internal processes and facility improvements. We know many of you are eager to get back into the studios, and we are excited to welcome you back, but we ask for patience as our priority is safety for our entire community. The Bray is committed to providing an environment for individuals to work in a space of equity, respect, belonging, and support, and we recognize the amazing full range of makers, artists, designers, and thinkers who are part of our community. The importance of the Bray, at this time, is its ability to make an impact on the future of ceramic arts, and our staff and board is tasked with focusing wholeheartedly on the bigger picture while implementing small steps to affect real change in our field. Thank you, again, for your commitment and support of the Bray. We are optimistic that this year will offer more opportunities to further re-open the Bray to the public in meaningful ways and we look forward to reconnecting with you.

2020 Remote Summer Residents Due to the pandemic, the Summer Residents were not able to join us on campus this year. We pivoted our programming to provide support for nine Summer Scholarship Artists remotely. Remote Residents received scholarship funds to further their art practice, the opportunity to participate in exhibitions and the ability to sell work at the Bray. The Bray is honored to award the following short-term scholarships—AMACO Brent, Rochefort, Sage and Windgate scholarships—made possible by AMACO Brent, Brian Rochefort, Evelyn Sage and Windgate Foundation.

The Archie Bray Foundation recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the Foundation now stands. Archeological evidence shows that Native Americans inhabited the valley in which Helena is situated more than 12,000 years ago. Although never serving as the permanent home of any particular tribe, the valley was a crossover area for Salish, Crow, Bannock, and Blackfeet tribal members. We also want to recognize that Montana today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here. We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities— past, present, future—and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence.
The Bray is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the enrichment of the ceramic arts, located at 2915 Country Club Ave. in Helena, just 1/3 mile west of Spring Meadow Lake. This project is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, and in part by the Montana Cultural Trust, the Montana Arts Council, the Bray Business Alliance and the friends and members of the Bray. The Bray is funded in part by coal severance taxes paid based upon coal mined in Montana and deposited in Montana’s Cultural and Aesthetic Projects Trust Fund.
