11TH ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION

FEBRUARY 1–FEBRUARY 23, 2019 Juried by Sunkoo Yuh

The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts is a nonprofit, educational institution dedicated to the enrichment of the ceramic arts. Three miles from downtown Helena, Montana, the Bray is located on the site of a historic brick and tile factory. For 65 years, ceramic artists from around the world have come to the Bray to make artwork, share experiences and explore new ideas. The Bray offers year-round and seasonal artist-in-residence opportunities as well as community classes and specialized workshops for adults and children. Our galleries annually host eight to ten exhibitions showcasing resident and invited artists and the grounds are open and free to the public year-round. The Bray was established in 1951 “to make available to all who are seriously interested in the ceramic arts, a fine place to work.

Director’s Remarks Thank you to all of the artists participating in the 2019 Beyond the Brickyard exhibition. There were many wonderful submissions and while we wish we could include everyone, we appreciate the interest in being a part of this annual juried exhibition. Beyond the Brickyard has offered inspiration over the years by introducing vibrant new artists and providing a survey of the diverse ceramic art being made around the country. Special congratulations to Sara Catapano as the Juror’s Award recipient and to Joshua Scott for the Director’s Award. I want to thank Sunkoo Yuh for jurying and putting together a compelling exhibition. Sunkoo was awarded the 2018 Voulkos Fellowship at the Bray, which honors accomplished artists in our field. Fellows are invited to spend time working in the Voulkos Visiting Artist Studio, lead a public workshop and immerse themselves in the Bray's resident artist community. Sunkoo and his wife Minsoo spent two months working at the Bray and both were incredibly productive and inspiring to watch. We appreciated their generosity as part of the Bray community and hope they will have a chance to visit again. —Steven Young Lee, Resident Artist Director

Juror’s Remarks Being a juror for a juried exhibition is generally a subjective experience, reliant on variants of personal preference and my own experiences as an artist. Selecting for juried exhibition is no different. There are so many diverse expressions in contemporary ceramics and despite having spent years working with clay, my knowledge of it, as well as my experiences, are still limited. There is still so much to learn. However, when reviewing the submitted artwork, I focused beyond my personal preferences and experiences and tried to equally view all the diverse expressions. I also focused on several things. Craftsmanship, technical skill, presentation, and creativity. But also whether the artist is pushing boundaries and taking risks within their art, whether there is potential. I look to see if the works resonate with me. I think almost every artist has the desire to make work that is psychologically or technically unique. I think we all look to make work that inspires longevity and I think that in that process, we try to understand ourselves honestly. It takes a long time. The work that doesn’t seem important in the present, evolves to become unique art in the future. Thank you to the participants for their time and dedication and for allowing me to evaluate all the incredible work that was received. For those selected, congratulations on being selected from over 200 submissions. For those not, I encourage you to keep making art that evolves and represents your own voices. Finally, thank you to the Archie Bray Foundation for this opportunity and for the honor of selecting for this exhibition. —Sunkoo Yuh, 2018 Voulkos Visiting Artist Fellow
