The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts is a nonprofit, educational institution dedicated to the enrichment of the ceramic arts. Three miles from downtown Helena, Montana, the Bray is located on the site of a historic brick and tile factory. For 65 years, ceramic artists from around the world have come to the Bray to make artwork, share experiences and explore new ideas. The Bray offers year-round and seasonal artist-in-residence opportunities as well as community classes and specialized workshops for adults and children. Our galleries annually host eight to ten exhibitions showcasing resident and invited artists and the grounds are open and free to the public year-round. The Bray was established in 1951 “to make available to all who are seriously interested in the ceramic arts, a fine place to work.”
Director’s Remarks Thank you to all of the artists participating in the 2020 Beyond the Brickyard exhibition. There were many wonderful submissions and while we wish we could include everyone, we appreciate the interest in participating in our annual juried exhibition. Beyond the Brickyard has offered inspiration over the years by introducing vibrant new artists and providing a survey of the diverse ceramic art being made around the country. Special congratulations to Ivan Albreht as the Juror’s Award recipient and to Don Nakamura for the Director’s Award. I want to thank Chris Staley for jurying and putting together a compelling exhibition. Chris was a 2019 Visiting Artist at the Bray. Visiting Artists are invited to spend time working in the resident studios, lead a public workshop and immerse themselves in the Bray’s resident artist community. True to his nature, Chris was generous with his time and gracious to the residents, staff and students. He worked hard in the studio exploring new ideas and creating a body of work for an exhibition in New York City later in the year. We appreciated his thoughtfulness and sincerity as part of the Bray community and hope he will have a chance to visit again. —Steven Young Lee, Resident Artist Director

Juror’s Remarks Like slipping on ice, the memory is still fresh in my mind. Standing at Robert Turner’s front door, 44 years ago as I was leaving his house, I asked him, “What are my chances of getting into Alfred’s Ceramic MFA Program?” He paused and kindly replied in a soft voice, “Not very good.” In desperation I gasped “Why?” He calmly replied, “Your pots aren’t developed enough, you haven’t found your own voice yet.” The 34 Ceramic Artist in the 2020 Beyond the Brickyard exhibition at the Archie Bray have found their own unique way of making their thoughts and feelings real in clay. Whether it’s a cup that reminds me of origami or a lonely figure, the artists’ lives in this show have shaped clay in one form or another. I am drawn to work that asks something of me. How was it made? Is there a story here? What is it? At the end of the day the questions are the answer. — Chris Staley Chris Staley is a Distinguished Professor of Art at Penn State University. He was selected to be the Penn State Laureate for 2012-2013. More recently, he was awarded the Universities Milton Eisenhower Distinguished Teaching Award. All the MFA programs Staley originally applied to rejected him. However, after attending the Kansas City Art Institute for a year as a special student, he went on to earn his MFA from Alfred University. He has traveled extensively as a visiting artist from Bezalel Academy in Israel to Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. He has received two National Endowment of the Arts Grants. His work is in many collections, including the Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as well as friend’s cupboards. He has served on the Board of Directors at the Archie Bray Foundation, in Helena, Montana and on the Board of Trustees at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and recently served as President for NCECA, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.
