INTRODUCTION

Tietgen, is a student residence built in new district Orestad close to the centre of Copenhagen. The building has a conspicuous circular shape, inspired by traditional southern Chinese Hakka architecture. The circular structure distinguishes itself not only through its characteristic shape but also because of the choice of materials and the decoration.

NEIGHBOURHOOD

The neighbourhood is very vibrant and close to the city.

Design Concept Five vertical lines divide the building both visually and functionally into sections and also serve as continuous passages that provide access from outside to the central courtyard and to the different stories. Harmoniously integrated building and landscape with a clear independent identity. To ensure optimum transparency and accessibility everywhere in the residence hall. There is uniform, equality for all residences and residence groups in the overall unity

To achieve a building shape simple and rational in a constructional point of view but flexible regarding spatial and expressive variation.

The green inner circle opens up in five “hotspots of entering the housing project from the outside. First floor plan

ď ą The upper levels are organized with residences along the perimeter with views to the surroundings, while the communal functions are oriented toward the inner courtyard.

Architectural features and material

 7 stories tall  360 rooms set up in blocks of twelve  Each room faces the outside of the circle and has panoramic views of the channel. The common areas, lounges and kitchens surround the inner-most courtyard.  Circular design creates a sense of equality and unity. A unique sense of alternating projected windows and terraces.

 The front of the residence hall is clad with the cobber-based alloy and oak.  Indoor areas are characterised by the smooth, unpainted concrete walls clad with plywood and magnesium floors

 There are total 360 rooms  All facing the outer side of the round structure and common to them all the basic shape  The room plan all have same shape and width but vary in depth. Single room plan

 30 of the Tietgen’s residences are double rooms that are well-suited for couples or for students requiring extra space.  There are no kitchens in the rooms. Thus, all cooking takes place in the big communal kitchens.

ď ą The building is harmoniously integrated in the current and coming building and landscape structure ď ą Copenhagen is a bike city and thus, it is natural that almost all residents have a bike. In the three easily accessible bike parks on the ground floor, the bikes are kept safe and sound all year round.
