Regenerative Approach is the next stage that comes after sustainibilty. It is based on a holistic view of the site context that aims for thriving new working systems. It integrates inner and outer realms of sustainibilty, focuses on shifting deep leverage points in transformational change. It demands for greater sustainabilty, positive enviromental impact, both social and indivual wellbeings. Thinking about every possible way to improve way of working after facing a world pandemic that swallowed great potentials in the creative industries wether it is small business or a freelancer. Ergonomic and efficient designs to create customized workspaces for the industries such as a cloth manufacturer, 3D printing specialist and Body Sculptor. Fabrication of these spaces are customized in the way that their movement within the work space will be designed for comfort to minimize fatigue and extreme body angles that effects the human body overtime. Introducing the faraday technology to the chosen spaces is also a crucial point the design. These customized workspaces are advanced with the faraday technology to step up to the future of working.

Principles of Regerative are pushed further by creating diversity in the coworking, nature inspired design that is thought for long term, solving the deep roots of the causes, adapting to change and cascading benefits not only with the sustainable appraoch to the design that fuels life but also the spacial system. Showcasing the aplication of 3d printers to mimick fabric by looking in depth into the fabric properperties and how this new found material can be used to simulate the properties of the fabric. Combining the technical focus with the benefits of remote working will create a regenerative unique efficient co-working spaces for the above industries.

Regenarative workspace is a project with the aim of developing the empty lowlines of Southwark - London, United Kingdom. In the context of pushing the future of ‘working’ to the highest level; replenishing whats been eaten with the idealogy of regenerative system to create a huge impact both on the enviroment as well as the industuries that have failed during the Pandemic by designing ergonomic, co-working spaces for the creative industries.

Project proposal’s overview consists of 4 main parts: The design of the workspaces for the creative industries to work more efficient. 1) Improving their work performance by enhancing their workspaces with the 3d printed (mimicked fabric mesh).

ARCHILLES - Page 8

2) Appliying the 3d printed mesh as the exo-skeloton facade structure that completely stands on it on with the multifunction of a planter to push the eco-technology.

3) Some of the workspaces are intruduced to Fara-Day technology to prevent the electromagnetic radiation coming from the external environment, as well as in reverse it will prevent electromagnetic energy radiated from the internal components from escaping the chosen rooms.

4) Rain water collection from the openings of the exoskeloton structure which will be used to provide for the plants that will grow on the facade.

Intent

:

Combination of the natural weaving patterns, I have managed to create a 3D version of the H shaped patterns that interlocks into one another to form a 3D mesh. After the extrusion I have realised that I can form a chain mail which continuously expands and forms a fabric like movement. In addition to this, my next step was to 3D print the form to see if it would work and follow the properties of the fabric. Softwares : Rhino + Grasshoper + 3D print + Photoshop

ARCHILLES - Page 10

Archilles by Elija - Architectural Design Portfolio 2022

www.Archillesbyelija.com

Intent : After creating the fabric, I then put it to the test to control the fabric with scaffolding structures and joints for it to mould into the shape that is still controlled but also has the organic natural fibre’s movement. As an initial reaction, I have realised that all the small joints can be supported with the scaffolding joints. Softwares : Rhino + Grasshoper + 3D print + Photoshop + Laser Cut Machine + Autocad

ARCHILLES - Page 11

www.Archillesbyelija.com

Intent : I was experimenting the different forms that the mesh can create, for an example in the pictures above you can see I have managed to capture the mesh’s process on changing its form. After using the scaffolding joints to guide the form of the mesh, I have realised that the joints that the mesh produces are retractable, as they interlock and form its own shape that can be translated into many other different formations. I have challenged myself to look into microscopic depth into a strand of cotton for me to understand the air gaps and the organic flow of the microscopic strands, I have taken a part from the strand itself and simplified the patterns that was very visible to the human eye, pinpointing the patterns I have created an axo diagram of the air gaps that pushes the strand away from each other.

Intent: After analysing microscopic depths of the cotton, I have managed to apply the analysis of the research into work. By using the patterns of the strand, I have created a density structure on the mesh, after modelling the form I have 3D printed if the mesh would still have the fabric properties... experiment was a success. Intent : After fusing one joint to another, I have realised that the skin can free stand without any support. For me to look closely into this research I have analysed a human spine to understand how spine discs fused to each other and able to support the entire body of a human.

Intent

:

I have combined all my experiments that allowed me to explore the possibilities of controlling the 3D printed fabric using the analysis of the spine research and density experiment, this helped me to introduce a prototype. In this version I have applied semi solid, solid and fabric parts to the structure where it involves three different layers that creates the skin.

Project Addition (Air Purifiying Ivy) Ivy is an evergreen, woody climber which can grow to a height of 30m. It has two different forms – juvenile and mature. It has climbing stems with specialised hairs which help it stick to surfaces as it climbs. Mature forms can be self-supporting. Most leaves are juvenile—dull green, lobed, with distinct light veins—and reproduce by forming roots at stem nodes. Mature leaves are glossy green and unlobed, reproducing via umbrella-shaped clusters of greenish flowers followed by dark, berry-like fruits. Ivy weighs down trees, making them more likely to fall.

Archilles by Elija - Architectural Design Portfolio 2022

On my second attempt at this prototype, I have managed to figure out and compute chain mail links properly where I made it thicker and laid out the layers of the semi solid, solid and fabric sections well. Therefore, this experiment was a success as I was able to identify the issues on my previous model and managed to make it stand without any additional support.

Abstract The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the affective spaces in the context of how the Dark Monuments past caused such damage on the people of Cyprus and how architecture can be the solution to cure this problem. Citizens of Cyprus is suffering from never ending trauma due to political conflicts that have happened between two nations. The long years of conflict between two nations and violence within the country as Turkey invaded and took over north side of Cyprus due to a Greek government coup and gained full control of the north section of the island, which caused a division within the island and the people of Cyprus. Thousands of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots quickly left the war zone, which is known as the city of Varosha. People of Cyprus fearing the consequence of losing the homeland and believing that once tension is over, everything will be back to normal. However, the memory of the past created trauma upon the newer generations. ‘’ Some left their wedding presents in their attics, while others said they still had pots cooking on the stove when they evacuated that section of the island’’. The people of Cyprus saw the country as one nation until the bigger forces such as Turkey and Greece wanted take over the entire island. What was once a special town turned into a wasteland that inhabits the falling fences, weathered buildings and barricades. It is now known as the Ghost Town that belongs to Turkey. Inside this ghost town you can see the traces of ‘panic’ leave almost like the film in ‘I am Legend’, you can see buildings are slowly collapsing and falling apart , abandoned cars are decaying and rusting, streets filled with emptiness,, and ‘memory’ of good times are now falling apart as the time goes by. The trigger of the situation has not changed and the trauma still lives through generation after generation, and post-memory still resonates in people’s minds. How some parts of the country became an empty shell and hollow structures as the citizens of Cyprus, left their homes and towns to create separation within the island. By following the idea halting time and conservation of those areas. Entire city becoming the a monument of pain and darkness that still lives through the younger generation.

Genesis of Trauma

Even though, all these traumatic events blamed under the name of Cypriots whether it’s Turkish Cypriot or Greek Cypriot. Bigger forces were always in the picture just weren’t visible for both nations; Disguised as the ‘Turkish Cypriot’, and ‘Greek Cypriots’. Political disagreements eventuated by the main forces which is known as ‘Turkish’ from modern Turkey and ‘Greek’ from Greece where both countries wanted to take over the entire island for themselves since the year ‘1897’ when it was no longer under Ottoman conquest due to vanquishment of the empire.

‘’On 28th December 1963 the Daily Express carried the following report from Cyprus: "We went tonight into the sealed‑off Turkish Cypriot Quarter of Nicosia in which 200 to 300 people had been slaughtered in the last five days. We were the first Western reporters The collective trauma works its way slowly and even insidiously there and we have seen sights too frightful to be described in print. into the awareness of those who suffer from it, so it…is a gradu- Horror so extreme that the people seemed stunned beyond tears." al realization that the community no longer exists as an effective source of support and that an important part of the self has dis- Forcing the outnumbered Turkish Cypriots to live in inhumane appeared… ‘We’ no longer exist as a connected pair or as linked conditions and only giving them 3 percent of the island as a ‘encells in a larger communal body” (Erikson, 1976, pp. 153–154). claved territory’ to keep an eye on them. I doubt if a napalm attack could have created more devastation. I counted 16 wrecked and burned out homes. They were all Turkish Cypriot. In neither village did I find a scrap of damage to any Greek Cypriot house.’’

Both nations describe the ‘undeniable’ past as a ‘censure’ where the criticism of these unfortunate events became a burden in every Cypriot citizen’s hearts and left them traumatized by the conditions that they had to live through due to political reasons. Humiliation and dehumanization movement by Greek Cypriots against the Turkish Cypriots in the years of 1961 – 1974 created a ‘mass trauma’ in the Turkish Cypriot generation in that time. When Turkish Cypriots describe the ‘reasoning of the division’ they refer directly back to the barbaric actions of Greek Cypriots that took place in the earlier interaction between the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots dated back to 1960.

Both citizens of Cyprus have left their homes to be protected by the bigger forces and found new homes to occupy when they were forced to switch sides overnight with the fear of being in the war zone. Finding themselves in the homes of a family that they had no interaction with was one of the ‘Monuments of trauma’ that both nation have faced in the early years. However, when we look at the Turkish Cypriots perspective about the ‘Trauma’ it goes back to 1961 – 1964 when massacre that took place by the Greek Cypriots in the one third of the Cyprus where most Turkish Cypriots were living in.

I would like you to imagine a community where they have existed and lived in peace for many in years in an island called Cyprus and I would like to imagine the psychological viewpoints of different nations to this traumatic and devastating event that took place on the 20th July 1974. When Turkish invasion occurred to take over the northern section of the island, with the De Facto system. Leaving the island and community cut into 2 sections which Is known as the Northern Cyprus and Southern Cyprus. This has created a collective trauma in the minds of the ‘Southern Cypriots’ referred as ‘Rum’ in the modern Turkish language. Etymology behind this word goes back to historical events that have occurred between the Byzantine – Greek against the Ottomans dated back to year 1265
