Linda Bennett
Hello, My name is Linda Bennett, I recently graduated from the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia - B. Arts Architecture + M. Architecture. I graduated from UTS with a 90%+ average and achieved the highest aggregated marks across all areas of study, including history, theory, practice, construction and design. I was awarded the Outstanding Student of the Year Prize in 2011 and I was also nominated by UTS for the 2011 Student Architects Medallion which is the most significant award a student can obtain in NSW. While studying at UTS I focused primarily on establishing my own agenda which at all times met and exceeded the subject outline. I am concerned with addressing the unique issues that exist in the context of each subject and/or project. As such my design and elective projects focused on a wide spectrum of considerations. This allowed me to continually research and develop a broad knowledge about architecture, the city, and it’s user. I believe it is important to mentor, listen, teach and actively participate in the communication which surrounds architecture. While at UTS I founded archi-ninja.com which gave me an online forum for ideas. The identity of archi-ninja has allowed me to write for Architecture Australia, Architectural Review and to participate at conferences including the National Architecture Conference, 2010. In 2010 I was nominated by UTS to attend a study tour of Los Angeles, allowing me to participate in symposiums with CAL Poly and CAL Tech university students, attending lectures, guided tours and interviewing Frank Gehry. In 2006 I was employed by Architectus, Sydney. While at Architectus (in collaboration with Ingenhoven Architects,

Germany) I worked on 1 Bligh Street, Sydney (www.1bligh. com.au). I worked on the project during all stages of development, from Competition to Practical Completion. I also managed my own multi-million dollar commercial projects, 54 Miller Street, Windeyer Chambers and St Martins Tower. I have extensive experience in the commercial industry and a good understanding of the Sydney commercial market. At Architectus I was exposed to all processes relating to design, administration and management. I am capable of managing large internal and external teams. I am a proficient Revit user and was in part responsible for establishing the Revit modelling standards across the internal and external team for projects including 1 Bligh Street, 54 Miller Street and Windeyer Chambers. I am capable of working in high pressure environments and I enjoy working individually and in a team . I build strong professional relationships and get along very well with my peers. I am a creative and positive individual and enjoy being involved on the elements of design which are unconventional. I am driven by the desire to be successful, to learn and to become a better individual. I am inspired by creative and motivated people who make a difference to the perception and practice of architecture. I also have many mentors and inspirations which expand beyond the industry. PROFESSIONAL PROJECT SUMMARY: Hillsong Church, Rosebury: December 2006 - July 2008 Team Member - Architectus Project Summary: Located in Rosebury, Sydney. The Hillsong Church is a $70m new auditorium and office building for Arris Group Pty Ltd. The scope of work consists of 3 major elements; a 2700 Seat Auditorium, a 10,000m2 commercial office and a public park. The Hillsong Church is designed and documented in Autodesk Revit 2009. I was primarily responsible for the development of marketing drawings, acoustic and circulation design, area plans and 3D presentation/visualisation material. Responsibilities: Contribution to Concept Design, Design Development, Marketing Drawings, Revit Modelling and Presentation Work, Occupation Schedules, and Development Application.
1 Bligh Street, Sydney: December 2006 - July 2011 Team Member - Architectus Project Summary: Located at 1 Bligh St, Sydney. 1 Bligh St is a $270m new commercial building resulting from the Dexus/ City of Sydney design competition, 2007. The scope of work takes into consideration the View, the Public Space, and the Work Environment. The 42,000m2 office building is set to create a new benchmark in Australia for sustainable high rise (5 Star Green Star) and is attuned to emerging cultural, social and environmental concerns. 1 Bligh St is designed & documented in Autodesk Revit 2009. I participated in various levels of responsibility across all areas of the design process. I was primarily engaged in ceiling design, area schedules, ground floor design, lighting design, plant levels and the design of the atrium roof and roof top terrace. I was also involved in establishing and controlling the Revit modelling standards across the project team. Responsibilities: Contribution to Competition, Internal Administration and Project Control, Coordination of Consultant Teams, Coordination of Internal Teams, Coordination of Client Presentation Meetings, Revit Modelling and Presentation Work, Concept Design, Design Development, Development Application, Product Selection and Specification, Marketing Drawings, Client Liaison, Tender Documentation, Construction Documentation, Control of BIM processes and exchange of information, Contract Administration, Defecting.

Professional Project Summary
Windeyer Chambers, Sydney: July 2010 - July 2011 Team Leader - Architectus Project Summary: Located on 225 Macquarie St, Sydney. Windeyer Chambers is a $3m facade refurbishment, additional floorspace and building upgrade for Strata Republic. The scope of work includes: remove existing sunshades to front facade, replace with new vertical louvres, overcladding, repainting, repointing, new lighting. The existing plant level is converted to new office space with balcony overlooking the Opera House. Possible scope for Artwork. The project takes into consideration the Heritage importance and existing built language of Macquarie St, Sydney. Windeyer Chambers is designed and documented in Autodesk Revit 2011. I was responsible for all aspects of the design process. I developed and presented 5 detailed options to the client. Including cost, buildibility and lifecycle costing. I managed a team of 2. Responsibilities: Establish Fee Structure, Internal Administration and Project Control, Coordination of Consultant Teams, Coordination of Internal Teams, Coordination of Client Presentation Meetings, Revit Modelling and Presentation Work, Concept Design Proposal, Product Selection and Specification, Handover of Development Application Documentation.
54 Miller Street, North Sydney: October 2010 - July 2011 Team Leader - Architectus Project Summary: Located in North Sydney. 54 Miller St is a $2m facade refurbishment and building upgrade for Investa Property Group. The scope of work includes: remove existing sunshades to front and back facade, replace with new horizontal sunshades, overcladding, repainting, repointing, new lighting. 54 Miller St is documented in Autodesk Revit 2011. I was responsible for all aspects of the design process. I developed and presented 9 options to the client. Including cost, buildibility and lifecycle costing. Environmental testing of each option was also paramount. I managed a team of 6. Responsibilities: Establish Fee Structure, Internal Administration and Project Control, Coordination of Consultant Teams, Coordination of Internal Teams, Coordination of Client Presentation Meetings, Revit Modelling and Presentation Work, Concept Design Proposal, Development Application, Product Selection and Specification and Handover of Tender Documentation.
100 Mount Street, North Sydney: January 2011 - July 2011 Team Member - Architectus Project Summary: Located in North Sydney. 100 Mount St is a $180m new commercial building for Laing O’Rourke. Architectus and SOM were engaged by Laing O’Rourke to develop a new proposal for the site based on the height and massing constraints of a pre-approved DA by Rice Daubney. The new proposal was to consider pre-fabrication in high rise development, ESD considerations (5 star green star), structural efficiency and indoor workspace quality. The project takes into consideration the Heritage fireplace hotel, the new commercial building which is currently under construction on the adjacent site, the closure of spring street for pedestrian amenity only and retail potential at ground level and existing built language of Macquarie St, Sydney. 100 Mount St is designed & documented in Autodesk Revit 2011. I participated in various levels of responsibility across all areas of the design process. I was primarily engaged in the development of Area Schedules, Ground floor design, Lighting Design, Core design, and the design of plant levels. I was also involved in establishing and controlling the Revit modelling standards across the project team. Responsibilities: Contribution to Concept design, Internal Administration and Project Control, Coordination of Consultant Teams, Coordination of Internal Teams, Coordination of Client Presentation Meetings, Revit Modelling and Presentation Work, Client Liaison, Control of BIM processes and exchange of information.
St Martins Tower, Sydney: April 2011 - June 2011 Team Leader - Architectus Project Summary: Located on 31 Market St, Sydney. St Martins tower is a project feasibility and concept study for Investa Property Group Pty Ltd. The scope of work includes: the incorporation of new and extended retail opportunities and DDA improvements to the existing shop entrances. The project includes new glass facades and canopy, remodelling of existing ground plane and the conversion of existing carpark spaces into retail. The project takes into consideration important relationships and vistas to the historic Queen Victoria Building. St Martins Tower is designed and documented in Autodesk Revit 2011. I was responsible for all aspects of the design process. I developed and presented 4 detailed options to the client. The options were developed around council FSA restrictions. I managed a team of 2.

34 Federal Road, North Ryde: June 2009 Project Manager - Private Project Summary: Located in North Ryde. 34 Federal Road is a shadow study provided to North Ryde council. The scope of work was to include shadow studies at various times of the year to analyse the implications of a new third party development. The owners of the neigbhouring buildings were not confident in the accuracy of the shadow studies produced by the architect and asked for the council to produce computer generated studies. 34 Federal Rd is designed & documented in Autodesk Revit 2009. I was responsible for all aspects of the documentation. I presented & overlayed the shadow studies in a report format. Responsibilities: Revit Modelling and Presentation Work, Model Existing Building, Produce Existing Building Shadow Studies, Model New Buildings, Produce New Building Shadow Studies, Overlay Shadow Studies and Provide a Shadow Report for North Ryde Council.
21 Corwell Road, Allambi: August 2010 - September 2010 Project Manager - Private Project Summary: Located in Allambi. 21 Corwell Rd is a shadow study provided to Allambi council as part of a development application. The scope of work includes the development of existing building & new building shadow studies at various times of the year to demonstrate the implications of the new development upon neigbhouring houses. 21 Corwell Road is designed and documented in Autodesk Revit 2011. I was responsible for all aspects of the documentation. I presented & overlayed the shadow studies in a report format. Responsibilities: Revit Modelling and Presentation Work, Model Existing Building, Produce Existing Building Shadow Studies, Model New Buildings, Produce New Building Shadow Studies, Overlay Shadow Studies and Provide a Shadow Report for Allambi Council.

At the completion of her course, Ms Bennett was the outstanding student of the year, receiving the highest WAM (Weighted Average Mark) overall, and was the recipient of a number of Australian Institute of Architect prizes, winning the UTS Masters Graduate of the Year Prize, and the Construction and Practice Prize while being nominated for the History and Theory Prize. Ms Bennett was recently also nominated for the 2011, Student Architects Medallion, the most significant award a student can obtain in NSW. Ms Bennett was an outstanding student, not simply on the basis of her own high academic performance but as a contributor both to the school and to her colleagues, by virtue of her ongoing engagement in the discussions and debates that are a major part of the School, and her significant mentoring role with younger students.

1 Bligh Street, Sydney: (December 2006 - July 2011) Team Member Architects: Architectus, Sydney and Ingenhoven Architects, Germany. Client: DEXUS Property Group/DEXUS Wholesale Property Fund/Cbus Property . Value: $270m. Floor Area: 42, 000m2 Status: Completed, July 2011. See the Professional Project Summary on pages 03-04 of Curriculum Vitae for my specific roles and responsibilities. Winner of the DEXUS/City of Sydney design competition Architectus, in association with Ingenhoven Architects (Germany), have designed and constructed a highly sustainable office tower that has achieved a 6 Star Green Star Office Design V2 Certified Rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. Extending the ideas proposed in the Stage 1 DA, the proposal for 1 Bligh Street was developed with three critical considerations: the View, the Public Space, and the Work Environment. The View: The corner of Bligh and Bent Street strongly marks the main address for the building. The elliptical form aligns with the grid to the north and is oriented to the harbour, maximising views and creating premium office space and a quality work environment. The Public Space: The reduced building footprint creates a significant new public space for Sydney that allows deep soil landscaping and extends Farrer Place. Broad curving steps rise to the sheltered wintergarden and provide an ideal place to sit in the sun and appreciate the full expanse of Farrer Place and the heritage buildings of the Education and Lands Department. The Work Environment: The Work Environment is designed around the principles of ESD, flexibility, efficiency, communication and transparency. The sustainability strategies were designed to achieve a 6 Star Green Star Certified Rating and a 5 Star NABERS Energy Rating. A fully shaded double skin facade provides excellent Indoor Environment Quality (IEO). The structure delivers consistent large floor plates of up to 1600m2 and achieves 92% efficiency Net Lettable Area to Floor Space Area. 40% of all office space is within 4.5m of the facade. The building achieves a 1000m2 contiguous column-free space creating high potential for office layout flexibility. The elliptical plan is 12% more efficient than a rectangular building in facade to floor area and allows excellent natural light penetration. The 120 metre high central atrium makes dynamic views accessible to all.

Structure: (Concept Drawings) Architectus proposed a minimum of 1000 square metres of continuous column free space and aspirations for a transparent facade. This lead to the structural solution for an innovative long span floor structure. Radial post tensioned beams cantilever 6 metres. The eccentric curved concrete cores provide the building's lateral structure.

Environmental Considerations: (Analytical Drawings) 1 Bligh St is Sydney’s first 6 Star Green Star rated high rise building and achieves a 5 star ABGR rating. In order to achieve this 1 Bligh St incorporates a number of green inititaves including a double skin facade (with the possibility for naturally ventilating the building in the future), a naturally ventilated atrium, the use of a specially formulated high strength concrete, incorporation of chilled beams, tri-generation plants, on site black water treatment and efficient fittings and fixtures.

The east and west facades will require the blind to be tilted down (up to 70°) in the early morning and late afternoon to prevent lower angle sun from infiltrating. Lower levels experience greater shading protection from surrounding buildings as can be seen by the greater extent of yellow shading at Level 14 compared to Level 1. Commercial Tower Proposal - Academic
Commercial Tower Proposal: (4th Year Design - July November 2009) 11510 Architectural Design: Environmental Performance: University of Technology, Sydney The following project was completed over 12 weeks. The brief required students to propose a commercial building situated between Martin Place and Chifley Plaza, Sydney. The project extended the requirements of the brief to respond to the larger issues of Sydney. This included Sydney’s lack of fine grain, generic and loose planning controls, minimal sunlight to public spaces, strong wind tunnels, failed transportation networks, lack of livability, public culture and creativity. The oval shaped building is situated as an object within the square, which is lifted off the ground to visually connect Martin Place and Chifley Plaza. The ground floor is developed as an active civic square with new retail and public programs. The surrounding roads are re-designed to provide pedestrian amenity. The oval shape also responds to issues of wind tunnelling and is 8% more efficient than a rectangular building. The building is situated at the edge of Martin Place to respond to the commercial nature of the precinct, this allows more than 50% of the site and Chifley Plaza to have full access to winter sunlight. The core is separated from the building to shade the western facade, this also allows the floor plate uninterrupted views towards the harbour and other key destinations. Naturally ventilated atriums respond to the direction of local wind conditions. These atriums have direct visual connections to the harbour, Chifley Plaza and Martin Place. The floor plate is 100% continuous; can easily be divided into multiple tenancies, and all fire egress requirements are met. The shape and orientation of the building provides 96% of the floor plate with useful light penetration of 250 minimum lux. The building has an overall efficiency of 83% NLA/ GFA, and an overall efficiency of 93% NLA/FSA. This was achieved through the exclusion of naturally ventilated floor space from FSA calculations when enclosed by a balcony. Structurally the building is a diagrid solution (800mm dia) which removes most of the required columns from the floor plate. It is typically 20% more efficient than a traditional construction. The building design was tested in design builder to calculate a 5 Star operational NABERS rating, it also achieves a 6 Star Green Star and premium grade commercial rating. Environmental considerations include orientation, power generation, envelope optimisation, water collection and building flexibility. Perspective from ground level

The Climatic conditions allows effective areas or Natural Ventilation. Naturally ventilated atriums and balconies are located to the North and South of the Floor plate.
Ground Floor Plan The ground level functions as an active civic square, it is both formal and temporal. The outcome of opening up the site, by removing built mass is that the adjacent buildings have more prominent street frontages, this increases their property value and provides an opportunity for them to respond by activating their own frontages. Various Public activities are placed on Ground floor including Channel 7 studios, temporary art/gallery spaces, cafes and restaurants, retail and commercial functions. In perspective the site reads coherently but with a diverse cross section of activities along the site. Fine Grain is encouraged at ground level which is open to the public, protected from downdrafts and exposed to winter sun. The ground floor functions as a social hub with a focus on public transport; the exit from the underground train station has direct relationship to the buildings core. The site also seeks to be flexible, capable of supporting various activities and responding to temporal and future demand. The ground floor has a relationship to the activates of the tower, active balcony edges allow longer views into the building creating a connection between those at ground plane & those above.

Long Section The Ground Floor perspective shows the human scale of activities tucked under Phillip Street. It also shows the connection through the building at ground plane, which opens up uninterrupted views between Martin Place and Chifley Plaza. The building seeks to express itself as an object.

The building is supported by the fundamental principles of ESD. The building orientation & location of the core seeks to maximise both sunlight penetration & provides shading to the Western facade. 20% of the volume is naturally ventilated. The structural system is more efficient than traditional construction and the shape of the building is 8% more efficient than a rectangle.
Trigeneration or trigen is the simultaneous production of mechanical power (often converted to electricity), heat and cooling from a single heat source such as fuel or solar energy. As with cogeneration, the "waste heat" which is produced as a by product that results from power generation is harnessed & used to supply 100% of the buildings electrical and power requirements.
The facade is designed to be both efficient, elegant and sustainable. The shape of the building reduces the volume to surface are ratio, while fixed shading is incorporated into the a 800mm clear ventilated cavity. A number of calculations were used to test the facade shading effectiveness. The shading is fixed and integrated into the design concept in order to minimise cost.
PCA Premium Grade Summary: Environmental: Environmental requirements are exceeded to achieve a 6 Star Green Star and 5 Star Nabers rating. Configuration: Configuration requirements are exceeded. The building is larger than 30, 000 sqm with all floor plates larger than 1, 200 sqm, tenant service zone is more than 150mm and 5% of the floor plate is capable of High loading. Mechanical: The mechanical selection with floor by floor fresh air is zoned and supplied to suit. Tenant Risers: General Exhaust, kitchen exhaust, supplementary toilet exhaust and supplementary outside air provided as per requirements, refer to core plan.
The project recognises the importance of water conservation. High Efficiency fixtures, dual flush toilets, waterless urinals are install- ed. 100% of Large scale rainwater collection is to be used for flushing toilets, hosedown areas and irrigation.
The floor plate is organised around social sustainability and workplace quality. The floor plate offers flexibility which is a key concept in Environmental design. In any number of configurations the building functions the same.
On site Water collection /retention will reduce flow to sewer rates by approx 90%. Details are incorporated into paving for seamless collection.
The building is easily divided and maintained in such a way that running costs are low and Indoor environmental quality is mainted at a high standard.
Standby Power: All standby power requirements are met. Not discussed in further detail. Building Management: Building management room with all requirements located on Ground Floor, refer to ground floor plan for location. Communications: Data Tenant risers provided, refer to core plan. Mater antenna located on roof, incorporated into structure, not visible, two carrier and mobile services with 100% coverage. Hydraulics: All Hydraulic requirements are met. Not discussed in further detail. Security: CCTV provided as required, 24-7 control room located in Basements.
Amenities: Showers located on every level in accessible bathroom, security and Lifts: All lifting requirements are met. Refer to core, GF plan and lifting diagrams. car wash bay provided. Electrical: All Electrical requirements are met. Refer to RCP and 1:50 Section. Max 10W/sq.
Parking: Car, bicycle, courier parking and loading docks provided at basement levels. No on-grade parking provided.

Structural Section Structural Concept The building incorporales a structural diagrid which reinforces the geometry. Most of the required columns are moved to the exterior of the floor plate to optimise NLA and internal quality of space. The Internal column loads are transferred to the diagrid at the mid rise and low rise plant levels to all the Ground floor to be liberated, this opens up the ground plane significantly and provides a more elegant solution. The structural diagrid is 20% more efficient than atypical construction. The structure and facade are highly integrated visually, while environmentally the structure allows a large cavity for natural ventilation and shading. The Core and Floor plates are expressed as separate objects, the lightness of the structure allows the floor plates to appear as light and elegant as possible. The up tuned edge beam allow high floor to ceiling heights which maximise useful daylight penetration and external views. Structure is vital to achieving the buildings concept, efficiency and effectiveness.
