Summer Program Mapping Production Workshop 10.11.12.13.14.15.16.17.18. \\ JUNE 2017

T O O L.

An item or implement used for a specific purpose. A tool can be a physical object such as mechanical tools or a technical object such as a software programs. A concept or device can also be considered a tool.

Drawing inspiration from the context of Al Quoz the MAPPING PRODUCTION Workshop will focus on architectural, mapping and production tools that influence, compose, construct the design process.

OBJECT IVE. ARCHITECTEM is invested in delivering academically driven workshops to the architecture and design community with the aim of enriching the Architectural fabric of Dubai. The workshop will be a ground for research, learning, networking and mentoring between academics and students from different architecture programs, and professionally practicing architects in the UAE. Through MAPPING PRODUCTION we will explore and dissect different tools of architectural production including Digital, Analogue and Mechanical tools as applied in the creative processes and Spatial tools as host for cultural production. This references the selection of Al Quoz and specifically Alserkal as the workshop venue. The workshop itself will become an instrument for researching the context of Al Quoz. This research will be archived in the form of a digital workshop catalogue. We are especially interested in the observations and dialogue that will arise within and from the workshop. Â

Along with disseminating academic content, delivering learning outcomes and activating dialogue around the context and existing architectural conditions in Al Quoz, the workshop will be a platform for networking and mentoring for the architectural community. Architecture engages a culture’s social values, and expresses them in material, spatial, tectonic and aesthetic form. Architecture carries collective meaning and memory. Through a series of designed experiences it closely impacts every individual. An exhibition composed of the outcomes of the workshop will further connect the artist community of Alserkal and the local community of the UAE to the tools, processes and concerns of architectural and urban design. The aim is to steer away from the common misconception that architecture only lies within towers composed of steel and glass and shed light on the broader discourse of the discipline.

Title : An Adjusted Definition of "Context" as a Strategic Plan of Action

Abstract: Architecture has become a profession dominated by considerations of "context," concerned with local histories, placemaking, community building, and having a social conscience. Unfortunately, these thoughtful pursuits have often come at the expense of architecture. As the profession's cultural impact continues to be reduced, it is necessary to propose a new definition for "context," and to re-think what it means to make contextual considerations. This new definition of "context" is linked to a high-level plan of action for architecture, with the profession returning its focus to what it does best: the design of form, and the creation of great buildings.
