URBAN DESIGN PROJECT
Connecting Birkenhead
Over 200 years ago if you looked at the Birkenhead from Liverpool docks all you would have seen is empty beatches and rolling hills. The only building in the foreground would have been the Birkenhead priory.
However, it all changed in the 1820s because of the steam ferry across the Mersey and the start of shipbuilding on the river bank owned by William Laird.
Laird made a fortune and commissioned James Gillespie Graham in 1824 to design the new town of Birkenhead near his shipyard. However, the anticipated building boom Grham and Laird had anticipated did not materialize the only part that was built was Hamilton square. A recession took over and the plans for further expansion were abandoned When the area did pick up again it was for a very different purpose it was to squeeze in as much residential in the area to accommodate the thousands of dock laborers in the area.
T In 1985 there was a potato famine which caused lots of people to head for Liverpool to head to the docks for work. In the 1860s a large proportion of Birkenhead’s population was Irish. So much that they established a small town which was known as Little Ireland, a town where 15,000 Catholics centered around the new holy trinity church.
In 1986 the Opening of the Mersey tunnel brought Liverpool and Birkenhead closer together. However, after the turn of the century in 1934, the docks of Liverpool had closed which had a massive impact on the people living in Birkenhead. Most of the people who lived there moved there to gain work. So this caused a lot of people to move elsewhere to gain work similar to the Irish did in the potatoes famine. The addition of the Queensway tunnel, railway, and ferries gave a lot quicker route to Liverpool.
This resulted in the wider development of the Wirral area. Birkenhead today has very similar characteristics to Jersey city they are both living on the edge of the more successful city (ie Liverpool and New York City) and most people just commute through and never stop. V
