AFHny activates local, pro-bono creative professionals to deliver design and development solutions that respond to the needs of our community. Our volunteers work to build a more sustainable future across the five boroughs of New York. We believe that everyone deserves a well-designed environment. We strive to collaborate with local community organizations to develop and implement quality design solutions within their neighborhoods. We thrive when we bring together communities, like-minded organizations, and design professionals to implement the visions of New York City’s neighborhoods by Designing Like We Give A Damn!

SUB-IRRIGATED PLANTERS: EARTH BOX SYSTEM STEP 1 Getting Started
The Staking System for the Original EarthBox速 includes 2 Clips, 2 T-Connectors, 2 Straight Connectors, 5 Identical Aluminum Tubes, Netting, 2 Outriggers, 1 Bridge. Make sure all components are handy before beginning your assembly. No tools are required.
STEP 4 Place Container on Bridge
STEP 7 Insert Straight Connectors
Insert straight connectors into the vertical tubes.
STEP 5 Attach Clips
STEP 8 Insert Vertical Tubes
STEP 2 Add Casters (Optional)
Insert the clips through the holes drilled through the rim at each end of the EarthBox. If casters are desired, turn outriggers upside-down and insert casters into sockets. You will need a total of 6 casters. Two casters came with your staking system. The additional 4 casters can be purchased separately.
STEP 6 Insert Tubes Insert two tubes vertically onto top end of straight connectors.
STEP 3 Attach Bridge to Outriggers
T-Connectors to STEP 9 Add Horizontal Tube
Tubes are identical in length. Insert a tube through the clip and into the outrigger. Repeat for the clip on the opposite end of the box.
Slide the long leg of a T-connector into each end of tube to be used as a horizontal support.
Continued on flap

WASHINGTON GRASSLANDS
HIGH LINE PLANTING DESIGN & LANDSCAPE ZONES PLANTING DESIGN The High Line’s planting design is inspired by the self-seeded landscape that took root on the elevated rail tracks after the trains stopped running. The High Line includes more than 200 species of perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees – chosen for their hardiness, adaptability, diversity, and seasonal variation in color and texture. Some of the species that originally grew on the High Line’s rail bed are reflected in the park landscape today. The High Line design team was a collaboration between landscape architecture and urban design firm James Corner Field Operations (the project lead), design firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and planting designer Piet Oudolf.
GANSEVOORT WOODLAND
WASHINGTON GRASSLANDS
At the top of the Gansevoort Stair lies the Gansevoort Woodland – a thicket predominantly comprised of birch and serviceberry trees. A series of raised steel planters provides adequate planting depth to accommodate the trees’ root systems. Vines cascade over the High Line railing, forming a lush, green balcony visible to passers-by on the street below.
The Washington Grasslands, where wild grasses sway in the breeze, stretch from Little West 12th Street to West 13th Street. Just to the south of the 14th Street Passage, a mix of grasses and shade-loving perennials grow in a quiet, protected area among chokeberry, sassafras, and witch hazel.
Thanks to Donald Pels and Wendy Keys
10TH AVENUE SQUARE
DILLER – VON FURSTENBERG SUNDECK The Diller – von Furstenberg Sundeck, between 14th and 15th Streets, is one of the High Line’s most popular gathering spots. Large-scale outdoor furniture is aligned along a gentle curve of historic rail track and surrounded by grasses, perennials, and shrubs. Alongside the water feature, a series of raised steel planters contain a mix of wetland species. On the lower level, the Sundeck Preserve consists of wildflowers, grasses, and sumac trees that create a striking silhouette against the skyline of the Hudson River and New Jersey. Thanks to The Diller – von Furstenberg Family Foundation
Just beyond the Chelsea Market Passage, visitors arrive at the 10th Avenue Square. Here, a grove of three-flower maple trees frames a spectacular view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. A wood amphitheater cuts into the existing structure, providing visitors with a unique view of Tenth Avenue. Thanks to Hermine and David Heller Thanks to Michael and Sukey Novogratz
NORTHERN SPUR PRESERVE Evoking the wild landscape that grew on the High Line before it was a park, the Northern Spur Preserve features an impressionistic landscape of trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses. It is best observed from the intimate observation deck, where views of this robust planting bed are set against the city streets below. Thanks to Christy and John Mack Foundation
CHELSEA GRASSLANDS Just beyond the 10th Avenue Square are the meandering pathways of the Chelsea Grasslands, where a mix of meadow grasses and perennials surprise visitors with dramatic variety in color and texture throughout the year. Here, sweeps of bright flowers and green grasses in summer evolve into an animated tapestry of bright golds, deep reds, and rich browns in fall. This space reflects Piet Oudolf’s appreciation for the aesthetic characteristics of each plant as they change throughout the season.
