“The Refugee Crisis - From Social Housing to Inclusion” abstract by Bence Komlósi, Architecture for Refugees

The keynote speech “The refugee crisis - from social housing to inclusion” summarizes the most important problems and solutions of the refugee crisis on a European and global level. It focuses on sustainable and resilient solutions and their sociocultural, economic, ecological and spatial characteristics. Housing is an important part of inclusion but it could not be studied by itself. “Shelter is not Enough - Living Environment for Refugees in Switzerland” is the title of the currently running exhibition curated by the Architecture for Refugees SCHWEIZ in Zürich. Housing and its problems and solutions have to be analysed on a complex and sustainable level. There is no perfect solution, the cases are different in the different parts of the world but general characteristics can be defined. The presentation will collect these main elements and their basic attributes. These generic definitions, as global solutions, will help the local implementation. They will provide information and tools to all the stakeholders of the crisis. Refugees, politicians, developers, urban planners, architects, civils and volunteers could all use these statements and definitions for further developments in their network, neighbourhood, municipality and country. The most important and basic question is very simple. How can our societies get “From the culture of waiting to the culture of care” and how could we realise inclusive societies?
