INCLUSION
Diversity means: - Different sociocultural groups collaborating in the city - Living together and not only next to each other
INCLUSION
Togetherness means: - Social contacts - Community-oriented and community-based developments
INCLUSION
Inclusivity is an utopia! Such as capitalism! So let’s go for the first one!
Problems, current state of art and the basic needs of refugees
PROBLEMS
Problem 00. Sociocultural, economic and spatial segregation
PROBLEMS
Problem 01. Lack of social interaction, no personal relationships with the local / “welcoming” communities!
PROBLEMS
The refugee housing “solutions are often located on the outskirts of cities, towns and villages. No neighbours. Sociocultural and spatial segregation!
PROBLEMS
Problem 02. Lack of financial independency. A huge percentage of the refugees are not allowed to work.
PROBLEMS
Not enough affordable housing and bad legal conditions for rent or buy a home! Economic and spatial segregation!
PROBLEMS
Problem 03. Lack of sociocultural programs to bring the different people together.
PROBLEMS
Not enough affordable community- and public spaces for sociocultural interactions. Economic and sociocultural segregation!
PROBLEMS
Problem 04. Bad image of refugees. No trust between the parties (refugees and local community). 60-70% of the society doesn’t know “anything” about refugees. No diversity and social interaction!
PROBLEMS
PROBLEMS
No programs and spaces for diverse sociocultural groups! There are several isolated groups within the society but there is no interaction between them! Sociocultural segregation!
PROBLEMS
Problem 05. Lack of privacy! The refugee housing “solutions” offer no or only a very little privacy. Shared rooms, shared flats and no community spaces.
PROBLEMS
Social housing projects lack private- and community spaces. Lack of identity! Lack of affordable spaces in the city! Sociocultural, spatial and financial segregation!
PROBLEMS
Problem 06. No common language! No interaction! No diversity! Communication barriers! Lack of understanding between the diverse social groups.
PROBLEMS
No spaces and programs for intercultural communication! Not enough language classes! Sociocultural and spatial segregation!
PROBLEMS
Problem 07. Generalisation. Institutionalisation. Lack of “individual” level interactions. The problems and solutions are studied on a “meta” level.
PROBLEMS
No spaces and programs for intercultural interactions! Lack of accessible spaces in the city! Social housing “solutions cannot be inclusive! Sociocultural, financial and spatial segregation!
PROBLEMS
Problem 08. No one is interested in solving the problems!
PROBLEMS
The state - politicians and the profit-oriented developers have no interest! The individuals and communities do not care about exclusion or inclusion!
PROBLEMS
Problem 09. The real needs of refugees? Nobody knows them!
PROBLEMS
Refugees are absolutely not involved in the development process! Use what you get!
PROBLEMS
Problem 10. Lack of access to public infrastructure and facilities! Far away from centers and not enough money for traveling costs!
PROBLEMS
Location, location, location! Badly located refugee housing “solutions segregate refugees from the society! Sociocultural, financial and spatial segregation!
PROBLEMS
Problem 11. Lack of access to information! Information is the new money!
PROBLEMS
Lack of multilingual and multicultural maps. How to access the housing market, how to use the city? Affordable places, spaces and programs?
FROM PROBLEMS TO SOLUTIONS?!
From exclusion to inclusion! But how can we reach that? Sociocultural, financial and spatial segregation!
Solutions and steps to reach them
SOLUTIONS
Solution 01. More sociocultural interaction with the “welcoming society. Deinstitutionalization! From monoculturalto inclusive housing!
SOLUTIONS
Housing developments and neighbourhoods for diverse sociocultural groups! Location, location, location!
SOLUTIONS
Together! Refugees should collaborate in the development and maintenance process. Bottom-up with top-down support!
SOLUTIONS
SOLUTIONS
Solution 02. Affordable housing! Alternative housing solutions for low income households!
SOLUTIONS
Co-living and co-housing as an alternative solution to share costs and to have better social life. The state as supporter and not as provider!
SOLUTIONS
Better legal and social conditions for refugees. Better options for renting or buying a new “home.
SOLUTIONS
Solution 03. More community- and public spaces for diverse and affordable sociocultural programs!
SOLUTIONS
Inclusive programs! Communication beats language! Diverse programs for interaction. Cooking, eating, music, dancing, ‌ bring different people - locals and newcomers together!
SOLUTIONS
Solution 04. We have to get to know each other! Refugees and “welcoming societies should get to know each other and communicate.
SOLUTIONS
Intercultural programs to build trust and sociocultural bridges between the different sociocultural groups.
SOLUTIONS
Solution 05. More private space for refugees! More affordable housing and space!
SOLUTIONS
With financial independency and involvement in the development processes, refugees could define their own needs! Private space and “home is identity!
SOLUTIONS
Solution 06. More educational facilities! Accessible and affordable language schools and educational programs!
SOLUTIONS
Each and every profession and social groups could and should open their doors to involve refugees!
SOLUTIONS
Communication beats language. More interlingual programs and spaces for these activities!
SOLUTIONS
Solution 07. One to one solutions! From institution to communities and individuals!
SOLUTIONS
The passive 60-70% of the society has to wake up and has to start dealing with the refugee crisis on an individual and personal level!
SOLUTIONS
Only individuals and communities can turn exclusion into inclusion! Generalised top-down “social” housing “solutions” cannot answer the very different individual needs!
SOLUTIONS
Bottom-up community-oriented and community-based developments are needed!
SOLUTIONS
Solution 08. The individuals and communities have to start the inclusion process!
SOLUTIONS
The power of the civil society will force politicians and developers to start dealing with vulnerable people - refugees.
SOLUTIONS
Solution 09. Equality! Refugees should collaborate in the development processes!
SOLUTIONS
They have to be empowered to define their needs and to realise their sociocultural, financial and spatial “dreams!
SOLUTIONS
Solution 10. Equality! Refugees should have access to public infrastructure and facilities!
SOLUTIONS
“Let me work and I will integrate myself! With equal rights to education and labour refugees will collaborate in the development process of the society!
SOLUTIONS
Solution 11. Information is the new money! With access to information refugees can be active and useful participants in the society!
SOLUTIONS
SOLUTIONS
Intercultural and multilingual information materials should be developed!
