FOR THE APPLICATION to Master of Architecture Programme (ARB/RIBA Part 2) THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH (EDINBURGH COLLEGE OF ART)
ZISHU MA
Never before had I been so close to death. I stood in an unimpressive Buddhism temple in Huazhou, chanting for people on their death beds with other believers. I thought it would be a painful experience. But when I looked closely at the dying patients, I could see moonlight pass through the wooden panes and quiver in their eyes as well as the smoke from the joss sticks kiss their hands in the shadow of walls. I recognized that their souls had merged with the gentleness pervading the air. At that moment, the temple was no longer an old, plain house but a merciful, graceful saint, seeing lives off to another world. It softened our hearts, and with the leaving of life, it also transcended its time-worn shell. From then on, I started to believe that no matter how unimpressive it was, space was the companion of our lives. But the reality was that in the city center of my hometown, we were nothing more than strangers to the places we lived. City blocks seemed indifferent and emotionless; buildings were merely piles of lifeless bricks and steel.

forgotten in urban life (footprints, snails, etc.).
However, this is just a tentative result. It is my life-long goal to add more vitality and humanity to this era and to soften the cold shells of cities like my hometown. So my next concerns will be how to apply my ideas to different social contexts and how to realize concepts through practical technologies. Therefore, I am eager to gain training from the Master of Architecture program at The University of Edinburgh. I am deeply attracted by the Modular Pathway studios, because I long for a global perspective which will constantly keep me away from narcissistic monologue, and help me cultivate a deeper understanding of the relationship between architecture and society. Moreover, The University of Edinburgh’s systematic architectural training (from technology to laws) enables me to advance from theories to practice step by step, and make my creation more convincing. But after all, what the programme resonates with me most is its diversity. In it I see more than technology or art, but a combination of various disciplines, trying to tackle all kinds of contemporary problems from different perspectives. That is exactly what architecture should be, and where my initial fascination for architecture lies.

The situation forced me into reflection on what role architecture should play in the vast urbanization. Some became symbols of economic prosperity and productivity. But they were more likely to be “productions” than “architecture”, and to some extent, they resulted in callousness and alienation. It is not because of the manufacture itself, but because designers had to filter out individual feelings for overall interests, blunting sensitivity to ensure efficiency. But if so, architecture would be devoid of meaning. We would lose our sense of belonging. My reflection gradually formed into a viewpoint called “Bullet, Square and Passer-by.” It advocated for architects to stimulate the interaction between architecture and people, and to involve space in people’s stories. To test this viewpoint, I created an infrastructure system design for Valenzuela in the Designing Resilience in Asia competition. The system could be changed flexibly by citizens to tackle disasters and was considered helpful by local residents. Our team finally received an award for architectural excellence, which really strengthened my belief in the enormous possibilities that men and architecture could create.

Who will decide the meaning of space? In Henri Lefebvre’s theory, “architectural space” is defined by people’s experience in life and as a form of social space production. However, the space produced by architects falls under the shadow of spatial hegemony. Nowadays, the vast urbanization movement seems to verify his reproach, as many forms of architecture are gradually being alienated from daily life and becoming a tedious piece of code. This is the soil in which the viewpoint of “Bullet, Square and Passer-by” was born. It reflects on the INTERACTION between architecture and human beings and emphasizes the MUTUAL POWER of designing and experiencing. The activities of “passers-by” refers to the activities that occur in the space, while “bullet” represents the design methods that architects use. Both are equally important when discussing the meaning of “square,“ which represents architectural space. This involves making scenarios and plots become the key to design, presenting an interaction between designed meanings and potential possibilities. In short, the viewpoint mainly focuses on two points: the initiative guidance of architecture and the redefinition caused by people’s experience. The former establishes the architect’s attitude, and the latter extends the vested meaning of the space. From this aspect, I try to close the gap between architecture and life and make architecture a participant in our stories. Meanwhile, more colors will be added to the diversity of social values.
1994
The viewpoint illustrates my appreciation of the POWER OF ARCHITECTURE and my respect for INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE. The portfolio offers some typical examples of my attempts to put this viewpoint into practice. What is more, I have tried various mediums such as newspaper, comics and film storyboards to create more vivid ways to transmit architectural knowledge. For me, this is also the responsibility that an architect should shoulder.

Numerous people are going through a regular square. For them every point of the square is the same. Suddenly they hear a sound of firing. WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT?
02
Scenario deduction In that moment, countless perspectives will be generated. Because of the shot, various emotions and activities are stimulated. Some think that it is for revenge. Some regard it as an accident. Maybe for some plain-clothes men, it is the signal of target's reveal. At this time different points of the square are no longer the same. When the chaos ends and no one remains in the square, every point in it becomes homogeneous again.

BEFORE FIRING Before firing, the measurement for space and time is universal. So a physically regular square is by all means homogeneous.
After FIRING After firing, different assumptions of "what happened" motivate different activities, which become new measurements of space and time. Due to the diversity of movements, the homogeneity of the square is broken and the field is redefined in various ways. Escape

DEFINITION
Architecture design is meaning creation, consisting of two parts: means and unknown. Architects provide definition as guidance, which leads to individual experience. Then different experience redefines the space in different ways. So everyone has the right and power to create the meaning of architecture, just like every ball can change the shape of the chains
VARIATION IN SPACIAL MEANING
The interaction between space and human experience greatly enriches the capacity of architecture. For me, this is where the diversity and interest of architecture lie in. 05

PORTABLE HUT
prefabrication DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION MEANS: Changeable Components UNKNOWN: Usages The new trend of prefabrication has raised the following questions. How to create enormous possibilities through a simple form, which can be put into mass modular production? How to increase economical efficiency and accessibility to nonprofessional users? The hut is designed to answer these questions. It is successfully built up in three days, with a cost of $540. Now it mainly serves as an exhibition room for students’ work and a good place for short rest. Imagine that the hut has been put into production. What is shown next is an instruction booklet of the product. SITE: Guangzhou, China

BEFORE CONSTRUCTION CHOOSE A USUAL FUNCTION
decide the bearing frames
There are three basic choices of functions. The difference in usage is caused by the flexible combination of four parts (A-D). Every combination is under the principle of human scale.
According to the usual functions and forms, you should decide which frame is the bearing one, which you cannot move. Each hut requires four bearing frames, with one on each side. The rest are all movable, and with the various position of boards, they can create more possibilities. Here are some examples of a single plan. More possible plans are up to your creativity.

I got myself another girl for retaliation, but found it a misunderstanding finally.
—— The Joker
Recently an evil hotel has been found beneath the northeast corner of the East Park. It disguises itself as an amiable citizen park on the first floor, which relaxes people’s vigilance. Many urban men and women are attracted into it and ruin their relationship because of its spatial tricks. According to the Joker, people will reveal their immorality form when they are stripped off their disguise. This matches ironically with the form of the hotel.

REPORTER: Could you say some details about what happened?
HAL: Sure. After we were separated by the stairs, we went into two different parts of the hotel.

Numbers of holes will let through a small amount of sight, while remaining large amount of blind zone. What's more, holes also serve as doors, which creates more route.

The more layers of holes where sight goes through, the more possible routes it permits, the easier to form misunderstandings. So it is hard to tell what their lovers are really doing in the other part of the hotel even though they see them.

“ALL YOU NEED IS JUST A LITTLE PUSH.” —— The Joker In short, the hotel skips our social norms by creating a new form of space and letting it affect our emotions. Now the hotel is sealed up by GCPD. But we ought to be alert to the weakness of humanity and the evil side of space. After all, the darkness is deep inside our heart. All space does is just a little push.
