Item 2 Character card (Mr Astardjian, Armenian merchant) Name: Mr Astardjian Native country: I was born in Armenia, which is part of the Ottoman Empire. Why did I come to Manchester? I am a textile merchant, and I came to set up a textile business in Manchester.

What else can I tell you? I live in Didsbury. My home is large and comfortable. I make a decent living for my family. I am a very busy man and I am often away on business trips to countries around the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. I can speak many languages: Turkish, Greek, English and Armenian. I can speak a bit of German, Italian and French too.

Item 3 Character card (Carlo Tiani, Italian ice-cream seller) Name: Carmine Tiani, but people call me ‘Carlo’ Native country: I was born in a village called Settefrati, near Lazio in Italy. Why did I come to Manchester? I came to Manchester to start a business. What else can I tell you? I live on Jersey Street in Ancoats. I own a delicatessen selling imported foods from Italy. I also make my own ice cream.

I live with my wife Carolina and our six children above my shop in Ancoats. My home is small but comfortable. I make a good living for my family. Our family business is successful and we have ten ice-cream vans selling ice cream around Manchester. I have made enough money to give some of the people from my home village in Italy the chance to come and work for me here in Manchester.

Item 4 Character card (James Cox, Irish stonemason) Name: James Cox Native country: Ireland Why did I come to Manchester? I came to Manchester with my father when I was five years old. He was looking for work during the Irish Potato Famine.

What else can I tell you? I live in Mary Street, which is called ‘Little Ireland’ because there are so many people from Ireland living there. I am a stonemason now and I have worked ever since I was a small boy. I live with my wife and our five children in a small, cold and damp home. I work very hard to feed and clothe my family. I am at work almost every day.
