Item 2 Character card (Chief Elouise Edwards) Name: Elouise Edwards. I am also known as Chief Elouise Edwards, MA, MBE Native town: Guyana, South America. This was a British colony until independence in 1966. When did I come to Manchester? 1961 Why have I come to Manchester? My husband Beresford came to Manchester to study lithography, and I came to be with him.

What else can I tell you? I have received an MBE and an honorary Masters degree from The University of Manchester for my community work. I received an African Chieftaincy for my work with African people in Manchester. The honour was bestowed at an official naming ceremony by Chief Reogigi-ugo of Nigeria.

What do I do now I live in Manchester? I work with a range of community groups to promote black culture, to combat racism in many institutions, and provide black and minority people with goodquality accommodation.

Item 3 Character card (Vince Taylor, son of James Taylor) Name: Vincent (Vince) Kwiku Eggay Taylor Native town: Manchester, United Kingdom Why did I come to Manchester? I was born in Manchester. My father James (Jimmy) Eggay Taylor went to college in Devon after leaving Ghana in the 1920s. What did I do in the UK? This picture is of me, graduating in Law at Cambridge University. My uncles also did well at British universities.

What else can I tell you? My father James helped to finance and organise the Pan-African Congress in Manchester. This was a hugely important event for the African liberation movement. My father became Director for Tourism after Ghana’s independence. I left the UK to live in Ghana with my wife after my father died in 1966.

Item 4 Character card (Sabbato Levy) Name: Sabbato Levy Native country: Corfu, Greece. This was then part of the British Empire. When did I come to Manchester? Some time around 1870. Why did I come to Manchester? Manchester is the centre of the world for the textile trade. The Suez Canal has made the Mediterranean a very important trade route.

What do I do now I live in Manchester? I am still a textile merchant running a successful business exporting and importing textiles, mainly from countries around the Mediterranean. What else can I tell you? I was a founder member of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue serving the Sephardic (meaning Spanish) Jewish community in Manchester. This fine building is now the Manchester Jewish Museum.
