Item 8 Character card (Liverpool dock labourer Patrick Maloney), 1881

Name: Patrick Maloney Age: 50 My job: I am a dock labourer. Where I work: I work at Liverpool Docks, or sometimes in the warehouses. My family: I am married to my wife Ann. We have two children.

If the docks close or if they are not as busy, then I could be out of work and my family will go hungry. I know that half of Britain’s goods go outwards through the port of Liverpool. I spend a lot of time bringing in goods from around the world for factories in Liverpool. There are a lot of men with families working in Liverpool factories who rely on the port and dock-workers like me.

What else can I tell you? When the docks are busy I have plenty of work and that means I can pay for food to feed and clothe my family. There are a lot of men like me with families who rely on the port and the docks for work.

Item 9 Character card (Manchester factory owner, William Henry Holland), 1881 Name: William Henry Holland Age: 32 My job: I am a partner in the family business. We own cotton-spinning mills in Manchester. Where I work: I work at my office in the centre of the city of Manchester. My family: I am married to my wife Mary. We have one baby boy.

What else can I tell you? My company relies on cotton brought in from the port of Liverpool. When cotton goods are sold overseas they have to go through the port of Liverpool. The profits from cottons and every other item that Manchester produces are taxed twice – once by the railways and once by the Port of Liverpool. Having a canal to the sea from Manchester would save our company lots of money. My company and many more like it could employ lots more people in Manchester. At the moment the city has many unemployed people.
