REJECTED 2” UPVC PIPES FOR WATER DRAINAGE AT A RECENT SITE. Not ideal for high corrosion areas eg along the salty coast lines of muqdisho. i purposed for application on interior architecture.

My Grand-dad being a mason,and my dad an Architectural assistant ,was one major factor that influenced my carrer path unknowingly ,coupled with my social skills ,artistic eye / artistic skills and prowess in mathematics in school ,I slowly developed an interest in Architecture as a proffesion.I STILL REMEMBER THE DAY I WAS SELECTED TO PURSUE ARCHITECTURE AT (JKUAT) JOMO KENYATA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, like it’s yesterday and the happiness it brought to me,it was a dream come true.

While at school and during my internships ,I started realizing the significant role of architecture/urban planning in uplifting businesses and communities around me,it lit a spark and ever since ,I started exploring ways of using my gift to make the world a better place,starting from home. Africa is my beloved home . THE INTEREST SLOWLY DEVELOPED TO LOVE AND EVENTUALLY A PASSION.

I have been in active practise for 12 years in Kenya ,1 year in Somalia (UN Green Zone ) ,consulting as an architect ,project manager at the following organisations Alrie,Deeqa,UNSOS,WFP ,FAO & IOM in different locations,Beletweyne ,Ethiopia Addis,Jiijiga ,Garowe ,Berbera.I am hoping to trasverse this whole continent, sharing my God given gift to lift businesses and communities around me .

A) THE M.O.L

Project architect :- Design concept,Co-ordination of design consultants,supervision.

M.O.L (MALL ON A LANDFILL) is an architectural solution seeking to efficiently put into good use :-

01.A landfill /dumping site that was a former water catchment area. 02.Construction waste materials.

A private client commissioned this project to maximize use of left over construction materials on this interesting site.

The market gap for a decent commercial centre to empower small busineses in the area is now a reality.

Located at a junction of three roads the de-relict piece of land was left for construction waste dumping and a water catchment area.The community around the site has grown immensely in the last 12 years ,THE MARKET GAP FOR DECENT SHOPPING SPACE IS NOW A REALITY.With the intention of building a centre for small businesses to empower the community ,the client sought proffesional advise from us and this is the outcome so far.

Architectural Concept.

Reclaim the land fill/dumping site / water catchmemt area and use all wasted and left over construction materials on site

I have been incharge of leading this dream to fruition by managing a team inclusive of ;- 2 Structural engineers from Mubai ,3 Geo-technical engineers from Khartoum Sudan & and an Electrical and Mechanical engineer both from Kenya, the Main Contractor company is led by 2 Kenyan and South african engineers.

We plan to reclaim the site,provide alternative water routes to keep the SITE AWAY FROM SURFACE RUNOFF after the findings of an ongoing geotechnical survey,that will inform us how deep and wide our column bases shall be.

We are waiting eagerly to put into good use left over site construction materials in the realization of this project.REDUCING COST OF THE PROJECT conveniently and contributing

We have oriented the building to take advantage of the breeze from the ocean straight into the 3 m circulation lobbies providing proper natural cross VENTILATION in and out of the building.

Got the client to incorporate a central skylit atrium and ZONE THE SPACES into different sections,food and drinks section,lifestyle retail section,banking and offices section.Adopted a DOUBLE VOLUME for the highest traffic area ,outdoor eatery for the food-court.

We sort to put into good use wasted construction materials on the site .

-Re-using left over Timber scaffolds for sunshading (Re used timber is a low carbon contributor and therefore a more greener approach)as seen in the facade on the side facing the direct sun.

-Use of LEFT OVER EPS panels for screening the ends of the lobbies allowing maximum natural ventilation.

-Adjusting lettable spaces based on a study of surrounding businesses and assess the MARKET GAPS that need to be filled.

B) TAMARIND TREE HOTEL.

Project architect :- design concept,cordination of design consultants and contractors during design and construction.

TAMARIND TREE HOTEL IS A 5-STAR HOTEL IN NAIROBI, KENYA, WITH EASY ACCESS TO THE CITY, the national park, and the airport. It offers spacious rooms, dining options, meeting facilities, and nearby attractions such as Carnivore Restaurant, Tamambo, and Dawa Lounge

Langata Nairobi ,Kenya.

Business case.

The hotel is decorated by carefully curated paintings with local artists ,name-tags and prices & contacts, to appeal to the guests and also uplift

the comunity of artists in the country.

Natural colours ,timber tones and accents of vibrant colours are very visible form the common areas in this businmess hotel.THE SPACES HAVE BEEN HIGHLY BEEN CONSIDERED FOR A REASONABLE PRIVACY GRADIENT FROM THE PUBLIC GUEST ENTRY TO PRIVATE SILENT LOBBIES FOR GUEST ROOM ACCESSSES, Common spaces outdoor pool flanked by gymn and future spa and sauna in the garden. The garden plays host to high level events and the water treatment plant doubles up as podium for garden events ,eg bands and musicianns or speakers during events. The first event was a Car and General car launch event launch.

Architectural Concept.

Earth colours symbolized by the nature from which the tamarind tree originates ,vibrant accent colours to influence the youthful nature of the target market.

C) PROPOSED PALMS HOTEL PHASE 02 .

Project architect :- Design concept,Cordination of design consultants, Partial supervision.

Increasing demand led the client (the palms hotel and restaurant) to start thinking of more hotel space. An architectural concept had been laid out for the contractor to implement but the client was stresssed by the need for a more client targeted approach that would see the hotel appeal to a larger clientelle base.After design review and cordination with potential customers, I went out to enquire customer requirements and provide all , coupled with sufficient amenities for support staff eg staff changing and dining ,providing a back of house kitchen yard at a budget.

Business case.

to realize the approval of the proposed hotel for the occupation of staff from various UN agencies.

With a tight budget,I led the design team Inclusive of Kenyan structural engineering firm,an electrical engineer from Sierra Leone coupled with several engagements with the UNDSS from UN , Consulting expert security engineers from Kenya TO REALIZE THE APPROVAL OF THE PROPOSED HOTEL FOR OCCUPATION BY THE UN personel in an area categorized as high risk globally.

Architectural Concept.

It ensured maximum return on investment for the client by opening their doors to a wider premium clientelle base

After carefully analyzing the clients situation and need I proposed the Convertion of a big central courtyard into an annexe for the hotel to host :-The basement/bunker TO ALLOW FOR SAFETY IN CASE OF AN ATTACK,gymn/ reception waiting (and a rooftop terrace ) to ACCOMODATE AN OUTDOOR EATING SPACE this would also double up as a cocktail /meeting space when need arises. These interventions that were prominently missing in their concept was a very welcomed idea by the client IT ENSURED MAXIMUM RETURN ON INVESTMENT FOR THE CLIENT BY OPENING THEIR DOORS TO A WIDER PREMIUM CLIENTELLE BASE.

By the time the Sudanese client and I met for coffee at Village market Nairobi ,he was quite clear on the fact that he wanted a state of the art 7 star hotel.I led a rigorous 3 week’s engineer’s workshop set to audit existing structure in readiness for renovations to a 7 star, proposed blue nile hotel nairobi.

We set out to investigate the condition of the 50 year old historical building in the heart of Nairobi City ,Kenya via a rigorous 3 weeks workshop

We came up with moodboards on how spaces would be re-done and calculated costs of conversion to 7 star facility.

E) PROPOSED XINHUA NEWS AGENCY HQ .

Project architect:-Winning competition entry .

I CONCEPTUALIZED THE DESIGN AND EMERGED THE WINNER IN THIS ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION THAT WAS ORGANIZED BY THE ARCHITETURAL ASSOCIATION OF KENYA consulting for an international team of architects as a graduate Architect ,went ahead to work with Kenyan engineers to come up with the construction drawings that were used in the implementation by another team. 01.

Architectural concept.

A series of waves, from where the buildings grow from,symbolic of the nature of wave travel and ‘broadcast‘, which is the clients main function.

The concept of this Media HQ was a SERIES OF WAVES ,FROM WHERE THE PODIUM RISES TO HOST THE OFFICES AND THE TWO TOWERS RISE STRAIGHT ALONG THE DIRECTION OF WAVE TRAVEL, HIGHER UP TO ACCOMODATE STAFF , THE ANNEXE WAS TO HOST A RECREATIONAL FACILITY WITH DINING ,symbolic of the nature of wave travel and the nature of the clients core function which is broadcast i.e an international news agency.

After the win I led the design team to an extensive research activity, on how to create harmony in designs (Structural design Electrical design mechanical design & security) for the realisation of a design that would meet both the Chinese and Kenyan building codes.we were finally successful.

Creating the perfect live work and play environment for the staff.

The podium of the Xinhua News agency African HQ, hosts the offices and the 2 towers were to host the accomodations ,the annexe was a recreational facility with dining gaming,karaoke and gymn,CREATING A PERFECT LIVE,WORK AND PLAY ENVIRONMENT FOR THE STAFF.

The client,Alrie constuction was at a crossroads on how to treat his box of a facade without changing his design that was a plain box with no character.I spear headed a redesign of the front facade by introducing prominent arches to match the clients expectations,of having an islamic feel.

Colour palettete inspired by the coral stone ansd sandy beaches of the surrounding area of this site and its neighbourhood.

A client request to have some similarity with most existing buildings while still maintaining a new kid on the block look made us borrow heavily from the prominent arches ,synonimous with islam .Islam is the redominant religion in Somalia.

The Unsos director wanted a mdule design that would accomodate senior staff. Minimal cost and minimal effect to the environment. We used 2 40ft containers.

In these projects we explored how we can maximize use of sea containers for useful use in mission activities.

An executive office unit for field mission operations.

STRUCTURE :-

2 No 40 ft Repurposed sea-containers.

SUSTAINABILITYAPPROACH :-

It is, without doubt, sustainable construction practice; recycling unused containers for construction material puts an unused product to use while at the same time cleaning up spaces such as ports and shipyards.

CONCEPT:- An executive studio unit for field mission accomodation. Hosts 1No and merges modernist white tones with timber textures.

STYLE:- Post-modern / Contemporary.

TEXTURES:-WARM WHITE TONES ON THE BUILT INS GIVES IT A STRONG FOCAL POINT.The white walls allow the wooden tones to stand out.Creating a strong architectural presence.

Design response: -We considered the tall stools and counter tops on the side facing the volleyball pitch, while still maintaining an clean view of the rest of the spaces. -We created a seating arrangement that allows comfortable TV viewing by mounting of TV screens on strategic columns. -We picked the space furthest from regular activities for the pool table hence uninterrupted play and equal convenience for the rest of the space. 03.Events and celebrations.

Considetration of the open to sky central space between the V.I.P and Main facility as a performance /dance floor space ,the space also allows a direct walkway for taking supplies in and out to the store and bar counter at the extreme end. -In case rain the DJ booth can double up as a Public Address stand and therefore it has been covered and been raised to a height that can be visible from the entire Main and VIP spaces. -Furniture orientation allows 100% views to the central performance space. Highlights from our last meeting: 01.Use of readily available materials polished concrete floor, timber slates and gypsum plasterboards. 02.Planters have been used as sun-shade against morning sun and they also double as a buffer between the outside space and inside space. 03.We also finally incorporated the ATMIS colours as requested from our previous meeting.

06. Urban planning.

A team of internationa investors located 8 acres along kiambu road in Kenya and tasked our team to come up with a proposed land use plan.

Master planning.

The process associated with this type planning is intensely collaborative, involving not only clients but also various design professionals.

Sustanability analysis.

W conducted an indepth evaluation the potential environmental impact of the proposed land uses.

Planning for human and vehicular traffic.

Involves traffic impact assesment brought about nby the new traffic proposed to occupy the different zones..

The tower . hosts the churches’ various offices ,teens classes, world class recording studios and other facilities, pent house and rooftop chapel.

07.Religious Projects. Church.

Status :- Ongoing

Just like the dove symbolizes the holy spirit and new/better beginnings in the christian religion ,this building shall shine a light of blessing and inclusivity to its region to influence positivity & in a neighborhood dominated by Islam.

The podium hosts the sanctuary (Holy-spirit palace) several seating levels tiered up stadium style on a slope

A convex seating arrangement, focused on the podium (at the most acute angle of the 1/4 acre ,100 x100 ft rhombus shaped plot) , ensures the most efficient viewership and human traffic in the sanctuary.

The concept has been through several design reviews and is currrentlky with trhe supreme council of kenyan muslims for them to give thri input on the design. THIS COLLABORATIVE ASPECT IS MEANT TO DRAW FEEDBACK FROM ALL ANGLES FOR AN OPTIMAL FINAL PRODUCT.

07.Religious Projects.Mosque.

Status :- Ongoing

A community of several clans have donated funds and piece of land in a town yet to experience expenential growth due tto its proximity to the of Benadir Somalia,Muqdisho.

The concept factors in a cafeteria ,below ground parking taking advantage of the slope,The extreeme end opposite the mosque features the imams residence and the madrassas.

RESIDENTIAL PLANNING

Design inspired by :- A family Villa we finished designing recently. Characteristic arches, exterior finishes and individual unit planning. We conceptualized these 6 townhouses to maximize the use of this 1/4 acre plot on a valley.

Don’t buy the house, buy the neighbourhood.

08.Housing Projects.
