re-defining [failure]

PROJECT BY LAUREN M cCARROLL

re-define the [blank]— whatever that is. Re-imagine perceived past failure. We are not tied to our traditional methods. “Failure” in a new context can lead to success, and it can also “fail” again. True failure though, is failing to experiment, speculate, and challenge the comfortable norms. True failure gives up on failed ideas, rather than adapting as technology advances. At the end of the day is it truly better to succeed in the easy problems than to fail in a hard problem?

Even though modular housing has struggled to thrive in the past, we have a new context. With the precision of CNC machine technology, we now have the tools to design intricate joints off site, which lowers the cost of labor and increases the speed of construction on site. In addition, this technology allows for mass production of standardized pieces, which could make CLT more accessible over time.

By utilizing a grid which is based off the 9:50 CLT blank, maximum material efficiency is created and offcuts become minimal. Instead of creating punched openings into usable material, windows become part the interstitial space between modules, and offcuts are used for headers and sills. Additionally, flexibility over time within a modular design becomes possible. With a catalog of pieces, families can “order” their additions to their home based off their needs.
