Evolution in Action

“A hundred and forty million years ago a creature struggled to escape the hostile horizontal world. It became lean and strong and developed into a maginificant climber. Then, driven by success and the gears of evolution, it developed the first feather.“

Origin Vancouver (British columbiA, Canada) North Vancouver is an outdoor person’s paradise. Trails, mountains, rock climbing, and serene backcountry – a playground just minutes from the city. This is where Arc’teryx, a high performance outdoor equipment company known for leading innovations in climbing, skiing and alpine technologies, was founded here. Beginning with the World’s first 3-D harnesses in 1991, Arc’teryx then developed the first thermoformed backpacks in 1995 followed by industry changing apparel designs in 1998. Today, Arc’teryx continues forward with its single-minded approach of designing the lightest, best performing and highest quality products. Technological revolutions developed by Arc’teryx have lead the Outdoor industry. Among the design and technology breakthroughs now considered industry standards are WaterTight™ zippers, micro seam technology, radically reduced garment weights, laminated components, Tri-Dex™ gloves and Warp Strength® Technology harnesses. The Arc’teryx ethos is to continually challenge what exists and develop the tools needed to manufacture new ideas. Designers who live to play in the outdoors drive the core development cycle, along with Vancouver-based manufacturing facilities and collaborative partnerships with textile companies. After more than twenty years of innovation, passion and the quest for better performance, Arc’teryx continues to fuel the drive to push the boundaries of what is known. At its heart, Arc’teryx is not a climbing company, or a skiing company, or even an outdoor company – it’s an innovation company.

Named for ARCHAEOPTERYX LITHOGRAPHICA, the first reptile to develop the feather for flight, freeing itself from the constraints of the horizontal world. At ARC’TERYX our central purpose is to build the finest products possible. The ARC’TERYX advantage is achieved by merging our unrivaled designs with the best quality, highest performing materials and assembling them in the most innovative and most durable manner for the intended use.

ARC‘ ADVANTAGE The Arc’teryx Advantage is created by combining activity-focused designs with the highest performing materials available, constructed in the most innovative and effective manner possible. This perfect synergy of design, materials and construction is the target Arc’teryx strives for in every product.

DesigN

Every Arc‘teryx product is engineered to meet the needs of the most demanding athlete. Activity-specific patterning ensures complete freedom of movement, and each product is specifically designed and detailed for the intended end use.

Materials

In order to maximize the performance properties of our products, Arc’teryx works closely with textile manufacturers to select and aid in the development of the highest performing and most durable materials available.

Construction

Arc’teryx is one of only a few major outdoor clothing manufacturers to have its own manufacturing facilities. This allows us to readily develop proprietary manufacturing processes, enabling us to efficiently create superior features that other manufacturers simply cannot build.

Feature: ALPHA SV JACKEt The Benchmark since 1998 First First appearing in 1998, the Alpha SV Jacket addressed the needs of climbers with outstanding weather protection without excess weight or compromised agility. Continually tweaked and updated with the best possible combination of materials, construction and design since its inception, this season the Alpha SV Jacket receives a complete redesign. Improved by technology, this iconic alpinist receives the new, quiet Arc‘teryx GORE-TEX® Pro face fabric, N80p-X: exceptionally durable and ten percent lighter than its youngest predecessor. Initial media testing proves the success of this new textile – the new Alpha SV jacket received the ISPO Award in the “Outdoor Apparel” category for its remarkable performance attributes.

Past and Present The jacket on the left is an original 1998 Alpha SV Jacket. Compared to today’s version, its front storm flap may not seem state-of-the-art, but its timeless silhouette still implies its single-minded performance intent. Uncompromised quality and innovative details, the world’s first application of WaterTight™ Zippers and a true anatomical fit put the Alpha SV in a class of its own. Weighing 650 grams, the 1998 version was considered amazingly light for a full featured alpine jacket. Verifying its quality and durability, many original Alpha jackets are still serving hard-core outdoor enthusiasts. The jacket on the right is the new 2012 model. In the 14 years since the premiere of the Alpha SV jacket, weight has been reduced another 25%, but still features purposeful details and functionality. Now with a new GORE-TEX® face fabric that has been five years in development, the 2012 Alpha SV Jacket is even more durable. This new N80p-X fabric meets Arc‘teryx’s high standards for abrasion resistance and waterproof/breathable performance while being supple, quiet and 10% lighter than the last year’s fabric.

Benchmark 1998. Weight: 650 grams

The face fabric is a critical component in the performance of waterproof, breathable garments. A high-density fabric construction increases strength and resists fibre breakage, preventing moisture from being absorbed into the fabric (“wetting out”), which reduces heat loss, maintains breathability and consequently maximizes user comfort. Woven from an 80 denier, false twist textured, high tenacity nylon 6.6 yarn, the plain weave construction of the N80p-X is evenly balanced and extremely tight in both the warp and weft direction. Translation: N80p-X is a durable, smooth surface that is inherently water repellent, snow shedding and engineered for longevity. The fabric is over 10% lighter than the previous material used in this category and strips 50 grams from the Alpha SV Jacket. The total weight of the jacket has dropped from 541 grams to 491 grams, displaying the same features but with increased durability and breathability over last year’s Alpha SV. The new Alpha SV Jacket also comes with a reduced chest circumference that accentuates efficient arm motion. Traditional bellowed crossover pockets, helmet compatible Storm Hood™ and removable HemLock™ inserts – relevant, simple and essential – remain standard features. The Arc‘teryx Alpha SV Jacket, a timeless classic that remains true to its origins.
