School Education For Migrants

In November 2015, the Commission launched a survey to having a better picture of what was hap-pening in the field and encourage the sharing of good practices. 256 participants from around 15 countries answered the survey The Commission has set up The Sirius network, comprising re-searchers, policy-makers, and NGOs, which deals with migration issues.

eTwinning is a platform where school staff (teachers, head teachers, librarians‌) meets to communicate, collaborate and de-velop projects and virtual exchanges to-gether with their students. With a strong focus on intercultural learning and active citizenship, the eTwinning community can inspire teachers working with migrants.

School Education Gateway (SEG)presented in 23 European languages the School Education Gateway is an online platform for teachers, schools, policy makers and other stake-holders. It presents European education policy develop-ments together with news, expert articles, exam-ples of good practices and additional resources for teachers and school leaders. Resources and articles relevant to the teaching and learning of students with a migrant background are available by searching on the SEG homepage.

Next steps? 1. Erasmus+Programme 2. Support the development and dissemination of new methods for language teaching in multilin-gual classrooms 3. Developing resources and support for teachers working with pupils of different nationalities in the classroom

Adult education is incredibly important in terms of refugees. In November 2015, the Commission launched a survey, questioning 256 organisations working in school education, VET (vocational education and training) and adult learning in 15 different countries, to having a better picture of what was happening in their field. • Language learning • Intercultural learning (for refugees and Eur. society) • Acquisition of skills Integration in Education and training institutions, labour market and society • Recognition of skills & competences • Career guidance / entrepreneurship • Personal / psychological / general support • Teachers training Language is the most critical education needed. Language helps: • understand the systems and the new culture • access health and other services • get jobs • move into higher skilled work • support their children’s education • feel safe in their local area • become part of local communities Adult education is vital in terms of refugee rights. • In terms of labour many refugees are exploited.

EEPSOL Provide information on how to engage with and support minority groups and migrant workers into employment through job shadowing, work placement, employer engagement and vocational language training and employability skills development. LUDICE The project looks at what it means to be a multilingual city and focused on issues such as language learning for immigrants, social inclusion through linguistic support and communication with neighboring languages.

Initiatives that have already been taken in European Universities are divided into 3 groups by European Commission: 1. Access to higher education and awareness in society – 10 inspiring practices 2. Meet basic needvs and ease social integration – 20 inspiring practices 3. Recognition of skills, access to HE and the integration of researchers – 25 inspiring practices
