fter a 28-14 win over Martinsville last Friday, the Woodmen are counting on a repeat performance against Whiteland tonight. They certainly do not want to repeat last year’s face-off with the Warriors since Whiteland trounced the Woodmen 35-6 last year. Changes to the Whiteland line-up could work in GHS’s favor. “Whiteland is a good team and always have been. They have a good defense, but they lost one of their key players, Adam Money, who was their quarterback,” Coach Rick Guipe said. “They had to find a new quarterback. It will be interesting to see how good of a team they have this year.” Senior Dylan Moore, wide receiver and defensive back, said the new quarterback will be just as tough. “Whiteland still has a good quarterback

he boys tennis team is now looking up to a familiar, yet new face for criticism and encouragement. Last year’s assistant varsity coach, Mr. Matt Winget, has taken over as varsity coach. With a new coach and a new line up, the tennis season promises to be a winning one. Coach Winget said that his transition from assistant coach to head coach has not been a difficult one. “It’s not a whole lot different,” he said. “I just now have to actually make all the decisions. And now, I talk with John (Hannah) rather than Rod talking with me.” Both coaches complement each other. “John does a lot of talking with the boys,” Coach Winget said. “He does a lot of the same things as me; he communicates a lot with the boys.” So far, the talking seems to be working. “They are responding pretty well,” Coach Winget said. “They’ve known me for three years so it was not a big transition. They knew what to expect coming into the season.” When asked about the team’s strengths and weaknesses, Winget could only produce strengths, giving even more reason to believe in a winning season for the boys tennis
team. “We are a deep team,” he said. “We could play a totally different line up and still come out with a victory. Also, we are steady in all positions.” Expectations are high. “I definitely expect an undefeated regular season record,” Coach Winget said. “We should win Conference, and we should win the Jeffersonville tournament on September 14 and 15. We should also be able to compete with Center Grove in Sectionals, and they will be one of the top three in the state.” Senior Logan Fink, nephew of former coach Rod Hervey, opened up about the incident that resulted in a coaching change. “Coach Hervey got a DUI, and Matt Winget is now taking over,” he said. Despite his disappointment, Fink is coping with the change. “It’s definitely different, but we’re all used to them,” Fink said. “At some point in our lives, John Hannah or Matt Winget has coached one of us. I think we’re coping as well as possible.” Junior Mike Brown praised the coaches. “Matt was already in the system so it’s the same system, just improved,” Brown said. “Matt and John both did well as students and as players so it is easier to relate to them. They try to incorporate being a good person as well as having a good tennis game.”
who can put numbers on the board, Brian Webb,” Moore said. “Losing Adam should not affect their team that bad because they run more than they pass. They did lose a running back, but their back has stepped up this year. Another player we have to look out for is their middle linebacker, Mitch Meador.” The Woodmen are ready for the showdown with their axes in-hand. “The key players for the game will be Dylan Moore, Matt Heller, Brad Sherill, Charlie Rau and Llmar Stevenson,” senior Chris Johnson, wide receiver said. It has been a year since these two have met; this gives both teams time to improve. “Last year, Whiteland ran all over us, and to beat them, we are going to have to stop the running game and put points on the board because you cannot win a game with only six points,” Moore said. Coach Guipe agreed. “The biggest thing we have to do is play sound, fundamental football,” he explained. “We will have to cut down on the number of mistakes on both sides of the ball and just play hard and be positive.”

The coaching staff is not the only change; there are some major changes in the line up as well. After losing 2006 graduates Chris Herron as a singles player and Jordan and Justin Moran as doubles players, a few underclassmen had to step up and fill those prominent roles. “Trevor Cox, who played Number 2 singles last year, is now our Number 1 singles player; John Kersey, who played JV singles last year, is now our Number 2 singles player; and Ben Campbell who also played JV last year, is now our Number 3 singles player,” Fink explained. “I am a returning Number 1 doubles player, and Dane Kawamoto, who played Number 2 doubles last year with Justin Moran, is my partner. Mike Brown, who played varsity Number 3 singles last year, is now playing Number 2 doubles with Corey Beeson, who played JV last year.” Brown has a fairly positive outlook on this season. “I like to take it one match at a time,” Brown said. “To win our Sectional and beat Center Grove are always goals, though. Columbus North and Center Grove are going to be our only real challenges this year.” Fink is now looking forward to leading the team as a senior. “I don’t want to lead by myself,” Fink said. “I’m trying to work with five other seniors, so we can lead the team together.”
Woodmen vs. Dragons
Soccer to reclaim honor

he boys soccer team intends to reclaim their honor when they face New Palestine on Monday. Last season, the Dragons beat the Woodmen twice. “They are better than last year, but our strategy is just to take it to them and show them how everyone has picked up their game,” Coach Dustin Cotrill said. Junior Griff Kerns has high expectations of himself during this particular game to make up for his 2006 performance. “Last season in the game against New Pal, I lost my head in the game and ran my mouth to the other team and also the referee. I don’t usually do that,” Kerns said. One major obstacle involves Justin Sass. He was second in All State last year. “We are going to come out and pound them; they think they have something on us, but we are going to come in there strong and play our hardest,” said senior Dylan Harvey. From a slide tackle to a tore ligament, the Woodmen have a few injuries from the Columbus East game, but they are hoping to heal before the New Palestine game. Meanwhile, the Woodmen lost three starters to 2006 graduation. “We lost three excellent seniors last year, but the incoming freshmen have been doing their part and stepping up,” “This is the most skilled soccer team that I have ever seen at Greenwood,” said Coach Cotrill.
