ABOUT AREA
Area Environments is a creative studio that curates original work from contemporary artists to produce exclusive wallpapers and large-scale murals. Founded in 2012 out of a shared adoration for fine art, Area’s unique and collaborative approach to creating wall coverings continues to be fueled by this passion, alongside our obsession with quality and our desire to challenge the link between art and environment. Our participating artists are from all over the world, and we consider them our partners. Their wide-ranging artistic voices, stories, and talents have allowed us to build consistently compelling collections, and we’re grateful to them for the opportunity. We’re also proud of their individuality; we honor their work by maintaining the integrity of their original pieces, as well as by compensating them with a portion of each sale. Area is committed to selecting artwork that inspires the creative process, delivering unparalleled service, and surprising and delighting all who work with us. We appreciate your interest and we look forward to collaborating with you on your next project.

OUR PROCESS & MODIFICATION Our mural collection has no standard sizes; the size of your wall will determine the look of the mural. We will provide a layout drawing so that you can see how the artwork will look according to your exact dimensions. The image to the right is an example of the full piece of artwork, while the images below show how we can scale the art in relationship to the wall size. We custom print each order and can work with you to modify other aspects of the design as well, including color. Once everything is ready to go, our quality control department will look over every square foot of the order, packaging it with care before it leaves our studio.

COLOR COMPANION A subtle wall should never be dull. For those spaces intended to hum with subdued elegance, we offer the Color Companion: a rich blend of color and texture to complement our murals. We use two elements: one for touch, another for appearance. The Color Companion substrate is embossed with a tactile texture. Then we print a pattern that emphasizes the texture of raw silk, leather, or grass cloth.

CUSTOM It brings us joy to shine a light on artists from around the world through our collections. Yet we also have the ability to create completely custom wall coverings using the immense skills and resources of our Area team members. Do you have a piece of artwork that would make a fantastic mural?
We have the scanning capabilities to translate that work into a digital file.
Do you already have a file or digitally created image?
We can assess whether it will enlarge to your wall height with sufficient clarity and image resolution.
Do you simply have an idea or an inspiration image? Our team can generate original designs for you! Helpful things to consider:
When dealing with original artwork, a copyright release form will be required to confirm that you have the legal right to reproduce the work.
Files presented to Area should be a minimum of 300 dpi. Vector files work best.
Pricing for design work, including file setup, is dependent upon the time necessary to produce the desired result.
A strike off for approval will always be provided and is included in the design fees.
Timing is dependent on the design process. Production lead times are standard once a design is approved.
The dimensions of your space affect the manipulation of the file. The taller the wall, the greater the file resolution will need to be.
Our ability to produce custom wallcovering does not mean that we will reproduce replicas of other company’s wallcovering, artwork, or similar products. We reserve the right to decline work that intends to use another company’s wallcovering or other products as inspiration.

Whittier Advertising Saint Paul, Minnesota
When the time came to expand their offices in the historic Northwestern building in St. Paul’s Lowertown district, Whittier Advertising sought Area’s expertise in styling their sizeable walls. Area added simple yet arresting graphic elements to complement Whittier’s vision: large, framed works featuring their signature striking editorial photography. “From start to finish, the team from Area Environments exceeded our expectations and helped us realize our vision. Every time I open the door to our office, I feel inspired.” Montana Scheff, Creative Director, Whittier Advertising

Adonna Khare Burbank, California
Raised in a small town in Iowa, Adonna Khare has been drawing her family and animals since she was three. She creates using the pencil, eraser, and a sock as her tools. The drawings are not pre-planned rather they evolve through her experiences with people and the absurdities of life. The result is a group of drawings where the animals coexist in a world beyond ours, and are inexplicably tied together, often not by choice. The animals, she explains, are sometimes stand-ins for us. Khare received her Masters of Fine Art from California State University Long Beach. Her work has been sought after by prestigious public and private collections throughout the world. She has been featured in numerous publications and has had group and solo shows throughout the country. In 2012 she won the world’s largest art competition ArtPrize, competing against over 1500 artists from all around the world.

Amy Ouradnik Minneapolis, Minnesota
Amy Ouradnik is a Minneapolis based artist, gilder, and designer. After receiving her BFA in Printmaking from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, she traveled extensively in Europe and India studying the decorative arts. In 2002, she founded Aurora Decorative Finishes LLC, a decorative painting company catering to both residential and commercial interiors around the nation. Ouradnik’s recent exploration into eco-printing began during artistic jam sessions with her mother and daughter. Their mutual interest in plant dye, botanical drawing, encuastics, tie dye, bookmaking and other works of art has opened an exhilarating path for her innovative use of materials. Her inspiration comes from her garden, family and friends, traveling, ornamental art, patterns in nature, and natural materials. Ouradnik is a proud member of the Society of Gilders and an allied member of American Society of Interior Design.

Betsy Bannan Roanoke, Virginia
Betsy Bannan lives in Roanoke, Virginia and teaches painting at Virginia Tech. She has an MFA from Pratt Institute where she met her husband who is also a painter. Bannan’s work is inspired by the center-pivot irrigation circles that span the continental United States as viewed from an airplane or satellite imagery. Growing up amidst the corn and soybean fields of Ohio, Bannan rode her bike on what she says seemed like endless miles of which, at the time, she had no idea was a rigidly imposed grid system that spread across the mid-section of the county. “It only hit me after looking at the satellite images of that area much later that I had been living in the very subject matter that, 35 years later, would completely consume my work.”

Erin Kaya Chicago, Illinois
Erin Kaya grew up in the greater Chicago area, where she was constantly drawing and painting on whatever surfaces she could find. She received her BFA from the University of Kansas and also studied at the Ringling School of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida. Kaya’s dedicated full-time art career began ten years ago when her daughter was born. That life-changing event encouraged her to pursue her true passion: creating art using techniques influenced by her travels in Europe, Africa, and the Near East. Kaya hopes to bring the viewer to a different place through her gridlike paintings, as if viewing the earth from an airplane high above. Although she initially chose to paint in oils, she now uses acrylic, which allows her to create 20 to 30 layers per piece. Kaya currently works with Thomas Masters Gallery and District, a modern furniture boutique, as well as individual designers in the Chicago area. Commissioned pieces are also displayed in the Golub Capital offices in both NYC and Chicago. Kaya seeks to give back to her community through her artwork: she has worked with the YMCA, and Erika’s Lighthouse, a nonprofit helping teens who struggle from depression and anxiety. Each year she donates a painting for auction giving 100% of the proceeds to Erika’s Lighthouse.

Gabe Fonorow Honolulu, Hawaii
Gabe Fonorow is a self-taught artist living and working in Honolulu, Hawaii. Trained as a musician, with a degree in jazz bass performance from William Patterson University, he began his career as a visual artist several years later during his time as a working musician in NYC. Fonorow describes his monochromatic work as a study of systems, process, repetition, and endurance. He begins each of his charcoal-and-ink artworks much like a piece of music, giving them a set of rules or a central concept that are subject to change with the emergence of unpredictable elements. Although his process is influenced a great deal by his musical background, he is only able to work in silence, stating, “The sound and rhythm of the pen moving across the paper is an integral part of my work... the aural aspect of my process is essential to the results on the page. His first exhibition was in 2014 as part of a group show at Fireproof Gallery in Brooklyn. Soon afterward, he moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, and fully immersed himself in his visual art practice. Fonorow has since been featured in shows at top galleries in North Carolina including the GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art, the Sawtooth School for Visual Art, the Artery Gallery, and the Greensboro Center for Visual Artists.

Miles Regis
Los Angeles, California In the life and studio of LA-based, Trinidad-born artist Miles Regis, every action is an opportunity for creative self-expression. Aggressively hopeful and humanistic, Regis embraces a storytelling stance in his stylized renditions of fundamental scenes of love, loss, freedom, survival, activism, and living history. Tapping into the emotional experiences of exotic cultures around the world and presenting them in ways that are relevant to today’s modernized societies, Regis favors the simplicity of black and white structure, starkly juxtaposed with the complex dimensions of color; recurring motifs include his use of eyes, encouraging the viewer to look deeper. His paintings are often layered with vibrant hues, powerful imagery, text, abstract brush strokes, and purposeful objects. Regis is in the permanent collection of Intel Corporation, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, California African American Museum, and Senegal’s La Musee Borindar. Regis has exhibited at Art Basel Miami and The Coachella Arts and Music Festival and has been featured on CNN, The Huffington Post, Extra TV and Ebony Magazine.

Paz Irarrázaval Santiago, Chile
Using water-based materials, Chilean artist Paz Irarrázaval paints lush floral scenes that seem to cascade forth from the earth. After completing her art studies at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 2004, she traveled to Venice for an internship at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Since then, she has produced and exhibited her work in Chile and internationally, including at the Matthei Gallery, Isabel Aninat Gallery, FAXXI Art Fair, ART STGO Art Fair, and Aqua Art Miami. Her work has also been acquired by numerous private collectors. Irarrázaval’s recent work revolves around color and the study of botany, made even more intricate by a final layer of colored pencil over watercolor and acrylic figures. Through her pieces, she invites viewers to participate in the act of discovery as they immerse themselves in the hidden worlds of her jewel-toned “fictional environments.”

She earned an associate’s degree in applied art from Pima College in Tucson, Arizona, where she studied a wide range of media including oils, printmaking, and ceramics. Upon moving to Minnesota in 1992, Westlake connected with the watercolor community in the Twin Cities area. She became a board member of the Minnesota Watercolor Society in 2012, serving as MNWS president from 2014 to 2016. A desire to work on a larger scale than paper pulled Westlake back to her earlier training with acrylic and oils. Her work is influenced by her background in watercolor, as well as the tradition of American Abstract Expressionism. “I approach painting with a sense of adventure. Each canvas is an opportunity to explore relationships through shape and color.

The
Collection
We’re delighted to continue our collaboration with ArtLifting by adding new artists to our Fall 2020 Collection. The collection now boasts a total of nine artists. ArtLifting was founded in Boston in 2013 by siblings Liz and Spencer Powers. After leading art workshops at homeless shelters, Liz realized that exposure to a national audience had the possibility to transform the lives of these artists, who were homeless or living with disabilities. ArtLifting creates opportunity, empowerment, and validation− and the chance for artists to secure income through their talents. ArtLifting partners with artists from 20 states across the U.S., whose works have been purchased by individuals and Fortune 500 companies alike.

Allen Chamberland Boston, Massachusetts
“It makes me feel good when people enjoy what I do.” Despite physical disabilities that limit his financial opportunities, Allen Chamberland wholly devotes himself to making intricate and beautiful papercut works. Each of Chamberland’s pieces is made with a single sheet of black paper. His artwork takes incredible patience and vision. He chooses to create his work out of paper because it is inexpensive. He explains,“ You don’t mind if you mess it up. If you do, then you just crumple it up and get a new piece of paper.”

“Yes, I have Down Syndrome but first I want you to see me: Charlie French. Then I want you to see my ART!” Abstract artist Charlie French works in his art studio almost daily and his commitment to his craft is evident when viewing his beautiful, calming paintings. Born in NY, French has lived both in the US and abroad, and is currently residing in Dallas, TX. Juan Bonilla San Francisco, California Juan Bonilla uses art as therapy to help him communicate. He shares, “When someone looks at a painting of mine, I hope for them to see life unfolding, movement, energy, color, shapes, and form. My art speaks to people in a way I could never compose in speech.” Reflecting on his past, Bonilla explains, “I like including mistakes because it is a reminder that life can’t always be perfect. It teaches you to look beyond the top layer and discover true merit underneath the layers and mistakes.” Bonilla creates his artworks at Hospitality House, a shelter, drop-in center, employment program, and community arts studio located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District.

NEW FOR 2020
Jude Chase has been creating various types of art since the 1970’s. She has used oil, acrylic, and watercolor paints in addition to creating jewelry with glass fusing. In 2010, Chase suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma. Before the injury, she was a Lead Clerk in the IT Department at Contra Costa Elections Dept in California. She says, “When I woke from the coma, I didn’t know how to turn on a computer. I did, however, remember how to paint and draw.” In the years since her injury, she has spent time taking painting classes, moving around the country, and learning how to use her brain again after her coma. She currently lives in Bethlehem, PA, and has some of her work on display at the Epic Church Art Gallery. Chase has discovered that she likes teaching art and currently teaches acrylic painting once a month to a group of five women.

Marc Dallas, Texas
After 20 years of intense structure in the corporate business world, Marc experienced the abrupt onset of MS. Suddenly, the dynamic thinking and fast-paced problem solving that had consumed his day-to-day challenges at work began to slip away. With the need to find a structural replacement of the challenges he sought from his day-to-day work, Marc’s doctor recommended that he find new challenges in a creative outlet. Art became that creative outlet. While many would think the diagnosis of a debilitating disease would seem crushing, Marc turned a new passion into a unrealized opportunity and took to the canvas.
“Art gives me the direction that I’ve lost; a direction that always starts with a color, grows into a terrain of texture, and sometimes isn’t found until the last stroke.”

He has use of one arm and walks with a heavy limp when not using his wheelchair. When discussing painting as a form of self-expression, Strouss says, “It’s cathartic, challenging, and engaging. Over the years, creating and painting have served to illustrate things about myself or my life in a way that nothing else does.”

Adele Renault Amsterdam, Netherlands
Adele Renault grew up in a musical family on a farm in the Belgian Ardennes. At 14 she traveled abroad alone, living in Venezuela on an exchange. She then spent two years in Brighton, England, studying and practicing visual arts from classical oil painting to spray-can graffiti. In 2010 she graduated from the Academie Royale des Beaux Arts in Brussels with a degree in graphic design. In 2009, Renault first collaborated with artist Niels Shoe Meulman. They now travel the world together, creating large-scale murals in which she adds a host of site-specific birds and animals to his iconic word-images. Together the duo also run Unruly Gallery in Amsterdam, where they are based. The inconspicuous beauty of everyday objects and subjects fascinates Renault. Closely observing those not considered worthy of a second look, she paints portraits of faces, the elderly, the homeless, and pigeons in a realistic style. Her subjects are painted as photographed, yet are isolated from their context, enlarged and flooded in sunlight. Renault captures moments and expressions full of stories and meaning. Suddenly, a scruffy pigeon or a woman in the last days of her life emanate a quiet grace and irresistible force of life.

Amy Abig
Charlotte, North Carolina Born and raised in North Carolina, Amy Abig’s love of nature arose from an idyllic childhood of barefoot summers and time spent between the beach and the mountains. Much of her young adult life involved college and family, making an art career impossible, but her need to create always resurfaced. In 2015, with no formal training, she began painting; in the short time since, her haunting floral compositions have found admirers worldwide. As a hopeless romantic, Abig hopes her art will give rise to an array of emotions, including sadness. “Even in sadness there’s beauty,” she explains. “It means you’ve loved and lost, you’ve cared, you’ve felt, you’re alive.”

“Painting feels as natural to me as breathing. By allowing the light to determine the composition, the sense of space can be ethereal, airy, and soft. Even though I use a simplistic subject matter and color palette, the ideas and spaces are more complex and deep. Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Andrea received formal art training at LSU, Kansas City Art Institute, the University of Texas at Austin, and the SACI program in Florence, Italy. Home is Austin, Texas, the one place that nurtures her holistic and universal approach to making art.

Carl Heyward San Francisco, California
Originally from Washington D.C., Carl Heyward has been an exhibiting artist since the early 1970’s, Carl actually started his creative career as a musician with his brother. While he was attending Georgia State University, he found himself writing for the likes of Rolling Stone Magazine, High Performance, Artweek, Artscribe and others about musicians who also painted. The connection was made from music to visual art. Heyward began to create with photography and film which led to mixed media and woven works. You can still see that influence in his artwork today. Carl has has taught in the Master of Fine Arts program at San Francisco Academy of Art University. He continues to teach mixed-media painting which incorporates various disciplines including printmaking. Heyward is also the founder of GAP (Global Art Project), an international collaborative group of 55 artists from 12 countries. Two of the pieces in our collection, Songs After Dark and Egg Anxiety are works from a collaboration with one of GAP’s members Akiko Suzuki, an award winning contemporary quilt maker from Osaka, Japan. When asked about his work, Carl says, “I keep it simple. It is a way to make sense of the world, offering solace and gives clues to purpose or potential.”

Carlos Ramirez Santa Fe , New Mexico
Carlos Ramirez began drawing and painting at an early age, but as the only child of an immigrant family from Cuba, his parents encouraged him to attend law school for a structured profession. In his final year, however, he left the program to follow his vision of creating a fashion collection. At 23, he established the label Liancarlo; today, he is an acclaimed fashion designer. As his business grew, he became a painter by night. Over time, his paintings evolved from representational work to large, ambitious abstract pieces. He continues to paint daily in his Santa Fe studio.

Charlotte Terrell Nashville, Tennessee
After receiving her degree in landscape architecture from the University of Georgia in 1980, Charlotte Terrell began work as a landscape architect for New York City Parks involving the restoration of 19th-century areas of Central Park and other historic landscapes. She apprenticed with master finisher Ina Marks, of the Isabel O’Neil School of Antique and Art Restoration, to learn the craft of mid-19th-century decorative painting. Terrell’s century-old decorative painting techniques have naturally translated into her fine art pieces; her subject matter is informed by her passion for—and expertise in—landscape design. She was born and raised in Columbus, Mississippi and currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee.

Christian Gastaldi Paris, France
Born in the south of France along the Mediterranean, Christian Gastaldi has always considered travel and discovery to be essential fuel for his work. When “art became an absolute necessity” for him in 2005, he continued to travel, moving his studio across the globe to locations including Angola, Azerbaijan, Spain, and Canada. The potpourri of cultural influences he’s encountered along the way can be immediately glimpsed in his dynamic deconstructed collage pieces, created from materials such as paper bags and discarded posters that he explains “can be found in the streets, having suffered the passing of time, those whose mundane functions do not spontaneously elect them as arty material.” By incorporating his interests in rhythm and composition in his art, Gastaldi seeks to develop his own graphic language equivalent to a writer’s style. He currently lives and works in Paris.

Domenica Brockman Trumansburg, New York
Born in the U.S. and raised in various African countries, Domenica Brockman’s work is influenced by her passion for handwoven textiles from around the world. The breaks in pattern that come about by happenstance in the making of a repetitive design—the places where there is evidence of a human hand, not a machine—is what inspires her the most. Her preferred medium is encaustic paint (pigmented wax and resin) on wood panels; she often works with the shape of the square, using it alone and in grids, and utilizes a restricted palette and varied textures. Brockman has a BFA from Cornell University and a post-baccalaureate degree from the School of Visual Arts. She is co-founder of the Cayuga Arts Collective, a nonprofit organization for artists in the Finger Lakes region. When not painting in her studio, she runs a vintage clothing store and a gallery space with her husband in Ithaca, New York.

Domitilla Biondi Milan, Italy
Domitilla Biondi trained as a graphic designer, working and teaching throughout Europe before eventually founding her own multidisciplinary studio. However, it was only after studying sound healing and abandoning technology in 2014 that she began to create her intricate, one-of-a-kind paper carvings, which have since been internationally exhibited. In tandem with her work as a sound healer, Biondi’s art investigates what she calls “the potentials of harmonic frequencies” and the energy of the subconscious.

Emily Donovan St. Paul, Minnesota
Emily Donovan loves to travel, but her heart belongs to Minnesota. The state’s North Woods and the cycle of the seasons are both influential and essential to her batik art, which relies on wax and handmade dyes made from foraged materials. Having grown up learning about specialized tools and craft methods from her father, who built custom etching and lithography presses, Donovan studied art history and visual art at the University of Minnesota with an emphasis in printmaking and painting. Her process of hand dyeing creates what she calls a “living mark, tracking the movement and infusion of her pigments into paper fibers and encapsulating her experiences and discoveries in the outdoors.

Jennifer Wanger Freeport, Texas
Jennifer Wagner lives and works in Freeport, Texas. Her mixed-media work is a blend of plaster, acrylic paste, and powdered pigment. The patterns she uses are gleaned from old-world geometric decoration. Design motifs such as quilts, kaleidoscopes, and mandalas are often her inspiration; her mark is more accurately described as “built up rather than painted. Layers are applied many times onto both sides of an acrylic sheet or embedded within layers of resin and plaster, giving the work a delicate feel without losing a sense of action.

Karen Darling Toronto, Canada
Trained as an illustrator, Karen Darling worked for many years in the field before becoming a full-time painter and sculptor. Because of her training, she was very comfortable working in a realistic manner, but reached a point when she felt the need to challenge herself further. Exploring new ways of expressing herself led to a much looser and more abstract feel in her figurative work, which in turn led to completely non-objective abstract paintings. The introduction of wax into her painting process has allowed for multiple translucent layers that add depth and ambiguity; scraping back through these layers reveals even more than anticipated. This constant push and pull between happy accident and intentionality is what continues to captivate her. Karen lives just outside Toronto with her husband and two sons. Her work can be found in collections across North America and Europe.

Kitty Sabatier Toulouse, France
Kitty Sabatier lives and works in the south of France, where she was born and raised. After graduating from the Beaux-Arts School of Toulouse, Sabatier worked in Paris as a graphic designer for the publishing and communications industry. Sabatier’s practice of calligraphy and drawing feeds her fascination for lines of every kind. She is particularly preoccupied with connecting lines; exploring the process of tracing, building, and breaking down shapes and lines; and creating emptiness through fullness. Currently, Sabatier teaches calligraphy and typographic drawing. She also freelances as a graphic designer and regularly shows her works at exhibitions.

Lesley Frenz
Mount Veronon, Washinton Lesley Frenz is an emerging artist working in acrylics and watercolors. Born and raised in coastal Florida, she received her Bachelor of Arts from University of North Florida where she studied Art History and Painting. After working in several creative industries, Frenz married and left Florida in 2011 to travel the West and Northwest with her husband. Years of travel and living among such incredible beauty spilled out in January 2013 as she pursued a serious studio practice while continuing to travel. An avid hiker and backpacker, Frenz finds inspiration in wild places and her current practice is centered around the exploration of the natural world and landscape through its expression in color. Soft and atmospheric, her paintings convey a sense of mystery and a moment in time. Hanging up their travelling shoes, Frenz and her husband have found home in Mount Vernon, Washington, a small town nestled in the Skagit Valley between the North Cascade mountains and the Salish Sea.

Matthew Kirk Queens, New York
Born in Arizona and raised in Wisconsin, Matthew Kirk now lives and works in Ridgewood, Queens, New York. Having developed his craft without formal training, Matthew creates his pieces using readily available supplies, often from the construction industry: sheetrock and plywood are his base materials. His vague and familiar marks are an extension of his feelings and are often his way of processing the day’s events—discussions with co-workers or his children, things that have been floating around in his head. Kirk’s Navajo heritage influences but does not dominate his work, which has been shown in numerous galleries and published in the likes of the Wall Street Journal, Modern Painters, and the New York Observer.

Nancy Yermakoff Minneapolis, Minnesota
Enchanted by “the edges where the land meets the sky or is reflected in the water,” Nanci Yermakoff creates a variety of evocative—and quite literally reflective—watercolor horizons. The subtle gradients in Yermakoff’s paintings are the studied result of many layers of transparent pigments, but she harnesses watercolor’s unique capacity to spontaneously blend and flow when painting the “horizon” itself. A native of the East Coast, she now lives and works in Minnesota, often receiving inspiration from the lakes near her North Woods studio.

Nissa Kauppila Shenzhen, China
Although Nissa Kauppila was born and raised in the small town of Monkton in rural Vermont, her life and creative work now take wing half a world away in China and Australia. Employing centuries-old traditional Chinese techniques of watercolor and ink on rice paper, Kauppila’s work is nevertheless a style all its own. The intricacy of her paintings illuminate her appreciation for – and curiosity about – the powerful dichotomies found in the natural world: strength and fragility, stillness and flight, composure and chaos. Kauppila holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, as well as an M.Ed. from the University of Vermont. Her paintings have been featured in galleries worldwide, showcased in fashion shoots, and lauded in numerous publications. Kauppila currently resides and works in Hong Kong.

Rachel Dein London, England
Rachel Dein was introduced to casting processes while taking a glassblowing class at art college in London. Fascinated, she began to experiment, crafting simple yet detailed sculptures by pressing objects into clay, then covering the clay with plaster. Following college, she accepted an apprenticeship as a propmaker with the English National Opera; as her career expanded, so too did her knowledge and experience of casting, mold-making, and related techniques. After her ethereal floral compositions started to gain appreciation through word of mouth, she established a studio in her family’s North London loft to create tiles and commissioned pieces from home. In 2018 Dein worked on a project for Hidcote Manor Gardens, casting the estate’s flowers and plants to permanently encapsulate each season as it changed.

Stephan Gevers Melbourne, Australia
When he was 23, Stefan Gevers left his home in the Netherlands to work in New Zealand for three months –and ended up moving to Australia for good. The modernist design traditions of his homeland can be traced in the minimal style of his watercolor paintings, while his carefully calibrated color schemes take their inspiration from road trips through the Australian landscape. Gevers began his latest series of large-scale work, for instance, after a trip to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, an area where craggy, striated ridges coexist with lush foliage. Gevers’ pieces have been exhibited widely in both Australia and Europe. In addition to watercolors, he’s created felt sculptures inspired by industrial forms and collaborated with like-minded designers to print his work on functional furniture and silk scarves. For nearly a decade, he’s also taught workshops in contemporary watercolor at his Melbourne studio.
