Rouh AL Sham Arch 442 UG4 | Anya Sirota & Thomas Moran | Winter 2021 | One Month
Rouh Al Sham, a nomadic non-profit organization, develops spaces and hospitable practices to build solidarity among diverse people. Rouh Al Sham is Arabic for Spirit of Syria. Deployed in cities with significant diasporic Syrian populations, our parallel institution is modeled around three key objectives: to welcome displaced people and connect them to resources, to visibilize the depth and refinement of Syrian culture, and to create a forum where diversity thrives. Rouh Al Sham’s mobile cultural embassy module is simple to transport and arrange. Consisting of two shipping containers, the unit unfolds to reveal a series of architectural fragments and artifacts, culled and restored from vernacular architecture in Syria. The elements include artisan furnishings, portable walls, arches, and traditional carved columns.

Social Fabrics Arch 552 Institutions | Kathy Velikov | Fall 2021 | Six Weeks Social Fabrics is an expansion of the idea of accessibility and giving back to the community. It will serve as not only a local library for the community of Mexican town but also as a community place where members of the community can socialize, connect with each other, develop and learn new skills that will give them the opportunity to engage and be involved in the community. The project aims to focus heavily on skill-building, education, and independent creative pursuits. The design is inspired by Mexican culture, tiles, and textiles which aims to provide an engaging space for the community. Formal decisions for the design including the shape of the interior walls, spaces, and circulation are influenced by the fluidity of strings and fabrics. The building expansion is designed to feel organic, accessible, and provide fluid movement as occupants made their way through the different programs.

Itinerant Infrastructure Perspective
Earlier in semester, I designed an Itinerant infrastructural object to be used outside the library, that can be situated within any social public spaces such as parking lots, parks, and open seating areas. This infrastructural object offers sewing classes as well as access to materials such as sewing machines and fabrics to locals within the neighborhood. (it could be done by a partnership with a non-profit organization)

Cuttyhunk Seasonal Camp ARCH 432 UG3 | Malcolm McCullough | Fall 2020 | Eight Weeks
Cuttyhunk is a small island with a quiet, isolated beautiful ocean environment and that is what makes it perfect for a basecamp. The island already has two existing structures: the inn and the fishing club and my project would be the third large building there. The design focuses on reconstructing the island to become an attractive destination and a flexible comfortable space for cadets and other guest organizations. The design is achieved by starting with a cluster scheme between three forms revolving around a courtyard with two entrances. The design has three individual components with different purposes. A dormitory, Meeting Hall with some breakout room, and a kitchen, pantry and a storage area are being held in the last structure of the design with an outside sitting area looking at into the horizon and water.

Community Rowing Center ARCH 322 UG2 | Joel Schmidt | Winter 2020 | Six Weeks
This Project is a Community Boat House suited on Ford lake, Ypsilanti, Michigan. This Boat House was designed to create an environment where the community of Ypsilanti and athletes can engage together to do some activities. There are four different components of this project with a central space. The central space is a courtyard that contains a pergola in the middle with climbing roses that give the space a beautiful outside area. The plan shows the four different zones which are designed around the courtyard, a gym that has ergs and other equipment for athletes and community members, a gathering space that has a small library with sitting areas. The other two parts are the kitchen and the boat storage. The kitchen has an inside and outside gathering space where families can prepare lunch and eat together. The boat storage has various types of boats for the rower club and some kayaks. I have included some perspectives to highlight the different zones and aesthetics of the project.

Archive of Plans ARCH 312 UG1 | Melissa Harris | Fall 2019 | Six Weeks
This project is an archive of plans located in a beautiful spot in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The University of Michigan plays an important role as it is the hub of the city. I designed the archive in the center which is highlighted in yellow in all the drawings and the other spaces are on two sides. One side is facing the Bell tower which represents the University and the other side is representing Ann Arbor. The design contains a welcoming lobby, a gallery where old plans are displayed, an Auditorium, a small library, in addition to study rooms, and a coffee shop framing a nice view of the city. For this project, I started with physical models using different materials such as cardboard, chipboard, floral foam to examine my idea and work on developing it. The focus of this project was to show the relationship between the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan from different perspectives.

Solid / Void ARCH 312 UG1 | Melissa Harris | Fall 2019 | Two Weeks
This project is a continuous version of the museum board model. The focus was to cast the void of the previous model with some edits. The objectives were to see space as a solid and to engineer the construction of a vessel for liquid. The final model was built by using Rockite (a quickdrying form of concrete.) It started by constructing the formwork from basswood, and the cast was made by one pour. A blue tape was used to cover the inside of the framework to give the rockite a smooth surface. The casting process was interesting, first, it should be done by mixing some rockite and adding water slowly to the mixture. After mixing the material and the mixture is good, it will be poured into the formwork by shaking it to make sure it reaches all the spaces. Then, it should be left out for an hour or more depends on the amount. In the end, the rockite should be solid and cold to remove the formwork and have the casted final model.

Translation Arch 312 UG1 | Melissa Harris | Fall 2019 | Two Weeks
This project aimed to translate a two-dimensional painting into three-dimensional space. It’s been chosen a painting by the Italian painter and printmaker Giorgio Morandi who is known for his simple, contemplative still lifes of bottles, jars, and boxes. It is fascinating how he chooses his items, their colors, and how he places them. The focus was on the overlapping moments and showing depth using colors and a variety of shape vases. It started by making some reliefs and sketches as a primary translation. Then, a study model was done by carving out voids aiming to become inseparable from a larger composition relating them all in space. The objectives for this project were to make spaces through subtraction or carving, testing ways of expressing ideas, and to think critically of two-dimensional organization. Final Models was built by stacking 96 layers of 4-ply white museum board with a size of 4” x 8” x 6”.

Outdoor Pavilion ARCH 421 Geometric Modeling | Mark Meier | Fall 2020 | Two Weeks
This project is a pavilion designed by using meshes and subdivision modeling techniques. Weaverbird and Lunchbox plug-ins were the main plug-ins to use to create the parametric design. It started by defining ellipses and creating meshes using weaver bird’s plugs-in. Then, using the interpolation to connect the points and loft them to create the frame of the pavilion. After creating the surface of the shell, the next step will be creating the geometry of the shell as this case is triangles. Then, using the mesh surface component and weaverbird’s plugs-in the pavilion will be shaped. Render was done using V-ray in Rhino to create this golden render with a reflection.

This research project is focused on a grasshopper plug-in called Anemone. Anemone is a Grasshopper Plug-in that allows creating a looping system. Anemone enables to create of a cycle data between input and output to inform the function that goes to the data by the end. This plug-in is simple and has some components (Classic, Fast, Internalized, and Util) which will help with the workflow. This definition creates a recursive table using the Anemone plug-in. It is an easy definition, start with creating a circle with adjustable sliders. The next step is to copy the circle and move it up. Divide the circle into multiple points and connect them with lines. Use the Anemone plug-in to create a looping system. Add pipes surfaces to the curves and bake the output.
