Neil Michael Phillips
(2.07.1978 - 26.04.2023)
Tragically, on the 26th April this year, at the age of just 44, Neil lost a brave but short battle with a rare brain cancer.
Neil was born and brought up in the slate capital of the world, Blaenau Ffestiniog. He enjoyed an early part of his working life as a carpenter in the big city of Cardiff, but returned to his heartland Blaenau, to build the family business of Grey Slate and Stone Ltd and Darlun Kitchens & Bathrooms, working side by side with his father Mike.
Neil was a wonderful and amazing husband to Morwenna, a loving and caring father of Lliwen (14) and Enlli (11) and a much loved son of Mike and the late Dorothy.
Neil was a keen mountain walker and frequently walked with friends & family in the scenic mountains of Snowdonia National Park, with Tryfan being his favourite and much walked peak. The welsh slate trophy for today’s race in memory of Neil, has been hand-crafted by the team at Grey Slate and Stone Ltd in loving memory of Neil, a truly fitting tribute.
Neil’s brother Tim is a lifelong friend of the Llewellyn family, who organise this fundraising event for Brain Tumour Research in memory of Gwilym Llewellyn, who was also taken far too soon by this cruel disease in 2021.
The Phillips family would like to thank the Llewellyn family for allowing them to be part of this special day. The family hope that this race will allow them to remember such a wonderful, loving family man, a great friend and a sorely missed member of Blaenau Ffestiniog’s close-knit community.

RACE STATS
LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): J G O’Shea (20 wins from 147 runners, 14%) runs LETTER OF THE LAW & ROMANOVICH
TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): R Brisland (3 wins from 18 runners, 17%) runs ZANDORA
WEIGHTWATCHER: KENSTONE won off a handicap mark of 58, his rating is now down 8lb to 50.
LONGEST TRAVELLER: RED EVELYN trained by J Butler, Newmarket, 164 miles.
MILLICENT isn’t the most consistent but she signalled a clear return to form despite operating from out of the weights when third at Nottingham 12 days ago and, now from her correct mark, could be worth chancing to back that up now. Veteran Kenstone is also interesting back from a break with his yard in good order, whilst the John O’Shea trained-pair Letter of The Law and Romanovich could also play a part.
