Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
Can be given little or no chance.
TheBHA Handicappers allot ratings to horsesoncethey have taken partinasufficientnumber of racestoenable the Handicappers to make anumerical assessmentofeach horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weighttobecarried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participantwithanequal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
Ahorse rated100, forexample, would be set to carry 1lb more than ahorse rated99(ignoring anypenalties or allowances). Theratings published in the racecardfor handicap racesare the ratings thatwereused to calculate the weighttobecarried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps racesthe rating shown is thatofeach runner at the time thatthe entries forthe race were confirmed.Any subsequently published change to arating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.for novicesteeplechasers, the latest hurdle race rating maybeshown until such time as the Handicappers allot aseparatesteeple chaserating.Such ratings areprefixed by the letter h.

With plenty of pace on paper, this could suit the patiently-ridden DRASH ON RUBY who was still going well when making a significant error 3 out last time and she looks very fairly treated off this mark. State of Fame ran well under today’s rider 9 days ago and should be staying on at the business end of the race Rock Hurley has fallen to a workable mark and he can finish in the money today.
