Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

RACE SUMMARY
TATTERED FLAG bumped into one at Newcastle last time and, with sterner headgear applied for his handicap debut, he can probably improve enough to open his account at the fourth attempt. Recent Beverley winner Haunted Dream is an obvious danger if he gets the longer trip and Auntie Margaret isn’t ruled out on her seasonal return. 1-2-3: 1.TATTERED FLAG (USA) 2.HAUNTED DREAM (IRE) 3.AUNTIE MARGARET (FR) KEY colours

LONGEST TRAVELLER: DOC SPORTELLO trained by T Carroll, Cropthorne, 147 miles. RACE SUMMARY
LOTHIAN was rather disappointing when only eighth in the nine-runner C&D handicap won by The Defiant, also finishing adrift of Equally Fast and Doc Sportello (fourth and fifth respectively in the same race). However, better was clearly expected of Michael Attwater’s charge that day (strong in the betting) and he is taken to emerge on top this time. The Defiant has to be respected in his bid for the four-timer, but Hey Ho Let’s Go, successful over C&D a fortnight ago, is second choice.

Some potential on show, but the obvious on is the Gosdens’ Shibori, who ran to an above-average level and shaped well when second over C&D on debut just over 4 months ago. Naadyaa needs a big step forward, but can only improve after an encouraging effort at Southwell in February. LONGEST TRAVELLER: WINNETKA trained by T Carroll, Cropthorne, 147 miles. RACE SUMMARY
The vote goes to LOCKDOWN, who travelled well for a long way before fading in the closing stages when fifth on his reappearance over 7f at Kempton. On that evidence, this drop back in trip looks a good move and he should be a little sharper with that run under his belt. Winnetka is bound to be popular following last week’s clear-cut Windsor success and, though 0-17 on the all-weather, he wasn’t beaten at all far here on his penultimate start. Soyounique also merits respect.
