Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Having gone close around here last autumn, PEERLESS PERCY has put it all together to land back-to-back C&D handicaps in recent weeks, producing his best effort yet when denying re-opposing Viceregent by 1 1/4 lengths 17 days ago. A 4lb rise shouldn’t prevent another bold bid and he can complete the hat-trick. Major Snugfit also arrives in grand order and should feature. 1-2-3: 1.PEERLESS PERCY (IRE) 2.MAJOR SNUGFIT 3.VICEREGENT KEY colours

GREAT HUNTER shaped with promise when third in a strong novice at Chelmsford on his recent debut, and with this shorter trip unlikely to inconvenience him judged on pedigree, he can get off the mark. Maywake was placed for a fourth start in a row over C&D last time and looks the obvious threat ahead of newcomer Patontheback. 1-2-3: 1.GREAT HUNTER (IRE) 2.MAYWAKE 3.PATONTHEBACK (IRE) KEY colours

HORSE WELFARE Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.

There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): A Brittain (35 wins from 382 runners, 9%) runs QAARAAT TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): R Fell (5 wins from 24 runners, 21%) runs GINATO WEIGHTWATCHER: QAARAAT won off a handicap mark of 62, his rating is now down 6lb to 56. LONGEST TRAVELLER: THREAD COUNT trained by A Watson, Upper Lambourn, 284 miles. RACE SUMMARY ELLADORA is with a stable in excellent form and her recent win at Hamilton has been boosted by the runner-up since, so she’s taken to defy a small rise in an open contest. Recent Catterick scorer Ginato is a danger and Qaaraat, who was runner-up in the same race, shouldn’t be discounted. 1-2-3: 1.ELLADORA 2.GINATO (IRE) 3.QAARAAT KEY colours

Proud Champions of the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme All of our member racecourses participate in the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme, a nationwide initiative for those with disabilities that may not be visible. A sunflower lanyard discretely signals to staff that the person wearing the lanyard may need additional support or a little more time when attending racedays. Guests are welcome to bring their own lanyards or to register in advance by contacting the racecourse they’ll be attending. Sunflower lanyards can also be collected at certain entrance points. If you would like more information, please ask a member of staff.
