WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM

Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse for the most famous day in the racecourse calendar, The Northumberland Plate Day, a superb finale to the 2022 Northumberland Plate Festival. My thanks go to Pertemps and JenningsBet for their generous sponsorship of today’s card and the prestigious three-day festival. I would also like to extend my thanks to The European Breeders Fund for sponsoring on today’s card. Today we shall witness the greatest race staged annually at Newcastle Racecourse, the JenningsBet Northumberland Plate and we are absolutely delighted to welcome a huge crowd of racegoers and owners back to the meeting, having had to run the 2021 Northumberland Plate fixture at a limited capacity. The JenningsBet Northumberland Plate is a heritage handicap, run over two miles and is one of the highlights of the summer in British Racing. We are delighted to once again welcome a full field of twenty horses for the race, alongside similarly strong support for the JenningsBet Northumberland Vase. Stick around after racing for a must see performance with DJ Pete Tong with a 65-piece orchestra performing all the biggest party anthems. A strict traffic management system is in place today, please follow directional signage and police instructions to ensure a safe and comfortable journey from the racecourse this evening. Our next raceday is the North East’s social highlight of the year, the Gainford Group Beeswing Ladies Day on Saturday 23 July, featuring Rosie Ramsey live after racing performing Massaoke. Tickets are available to book on our website. From the team and myself here at Newcastle Racecourse, we wish you all an enjoyable and successful day at the racecourse. Good luck! Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

On profile, SENSE OF DUTY rather stands out as a 3-y-o on a steep upward curve and, assuming she’s as effective on the AW, she can take the step up in class in her stride and continue her winning sequence. A well-run 6f on a stiff track looks ideal for Spycatcher and he’s second choice, with Judicial of some interest at a bigger price. 1-2-3: 1.SENSE OF DUTY 2.SPYCATCHER (IRE) 3.JUDICIAL (IRE) KEY colours

RACE SUMMARY

Lots with chances but it’s very hard to side against EVALUATION who hasn’t looked back since joining Keith Dalgleish and is fancied to make light of a 5lb penalty and complete his five-timer. Zealandia also improved for a yard switch when going in at York for Ian Williams and rates the chief threat with the step up in trip a plus too. Carlisle-scorer Zoffee along with in-form duo Catbird Seat and Ravens Ark all figure high on the shortlist too in a cracking handicap.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here. Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care. There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse.
