OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

FLYLIKEANEAGLE has shown fair form on the Flat since joining this stable and, while he didn’t show a great deal over hurdles in Ireland, that was on ground more testing than ideal, so he’s worth a chance to make a winning return to this discipline off a potentially lenient mark. Saywhatyouwant and Lucky Lover Boy both arrive in good order and look like dangers to the selection.

RACE SUMMARY
Cases can be made for a few of these but the most persuasive one is for HASHTAG LORD James Ewart’s charge was seemingly ridden with an eye on the future returning at Kelso last month and he’s worth another chance to build on his promising debut effort in Ireland earlier in the year. Second choice is Kilbarry Leader, who took her record to 2-3 in bumpers back in May, with Big Gangsta rounding off the shortlist 1-2-3:

HORSE WELFARE
Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here. Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.
There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse.
