MAGICDOLLAR was unsuited by a steady pace when runner-up to a wide-margin winner over C&D 15 days ago and almost certainly remains well treated, so he’s a straightforward choice. Lady Bianca and Captain Dandy are considered the main threats.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: CHIEF’S WILL trained by A Watson, Upper Lambourn, 284 miles.

It may be worth siding with WAR DEFENDER in this trappy-looking affair He was down the field at Redcar when last seen 6 months ago but he’s evidently more of a force on artificial surfaces and is now 1lb lower than for his C&D success last January. Chief’s Will pulled out all the stops when scoring at Southwell and is feared off just 2lb higher, while Asdaa and Plastic Paddy should also have parts to play.

Horse Welfare

Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.

Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.

There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken.

Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse.
