LONGEST TRAVELLER: MAY SONIC trained by C Hills, Lambourn, 285 miles.

MAYSONIC was back on song to win at Southwell last time and retains plenty of handicapping scope on old form after just a 3lb nudge so might be capable of following up Pockley knows where the winning post is here and is feared most ahead of Lord Riddiford. 1-2-3: 1.MAY SONIC 2.POCKLEY 3.LORD RIDDIFORD (IRE)

Horse Welfare

Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.

Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.

There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken.

Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery

If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse

To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk

RACE STATS

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): A Nicol (4 wins from 14 runners, 29%) runs QUERCUS ROBUR TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): O Murphy (4 wins from 20 runners, 20%) runs FLEURMAN LONGEST TRAVELLER: FIRST EMPEROR trained by J Ryan, Newmarket, 241 miles.

RACE SUMMARY

Cases can be made for all of these but the most persuasive is for FLEURMAN, who did well to win in what was a modestly-run affair at Wolverhampton earlier this month, and with more to come in this sphere, Olly Murphy’s charge looks one to keep firmly onside. First Emperor is in top form at present so he heads up the opposition, ahead of Quercus Robur
