WELCOME TO SOUTHWELL
Welcome to this All-Weather Championship Fixture, part of the All-Weather Championships which culminate at Newcastle Racecourse on Good Friday this year. Thanks to sponsors, Betway, Mansionbet and Coral for their generosity in sponsoring all the races during the Championships. We are now one enclosure so please feel free to use the space on the ground and first floors of the Grandstand. To manage your expectations, with small crowds anticipated this time of year not all of the Food and Drink outlets will be open at all times. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact either myself, one of the team around the course or the Racecourse Office. We hope you enjoy the competitive racing and friendly nature of our Racecourse. Good luck. MARK CLAYTON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Southwell Racecourse is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Chepstow, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses.

RACE CONDITIONS
Today’s race conditions can be found on page 31 of this racecard.
SAFETY
In the interests of public safety all visitors to the racecourse must follow the directions of the Safety Stewards on the Stands and the Raceday Staff throughout the racecourse. Please do not leave bags or your possessions unattended at any time as this could cause a security alert. Please be aware that horses can be unpredictable, therefore care and attention is necessary within the vicinity of the horses. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL DRINK AND/OR GLASSES BE ALLOWED ON TO GRANDSTANDS, VIEWING AREAS IN FRONT OF GRANDSTANDS OR AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE PARADE RING. RACEGOERS DISREGARDING THIS REGULATION OR BEHAVING IN A DISORDERLY MANNER WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE RACECOURSE.
SMOKING
Smoking is not permitted inside any buildings but is permitted in all outdoor areas, this includes the use of all electronic cigarettes that omit vapour.
VETERINARY CARE
Horse welfare is a priority at Southwell. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
OF O F F ICI I C I A L BH BH A R A AT T I NG N G S E X PL PL A I N E D The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: EQUIDAE trained by I Jardine, Carrutherstown, 218 miles. RACE SUMMARY
GLEAMING MAIZE showed her first form in five starts when fifth over 6f here earlier in the month. It’s modest form but this is a race that might not take much winning and she’s less exposed than most in here so is worth chancing tonight. Divine Connection has to be considered in first-time blinkers. Atrafan should play a part too. Any money for either Presidential or Equidae should be noted also.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): K Burke (50 wins from 258 runners, 19%) runs BACKSTAGE TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): A Balding (4 wins from 11 runners, 36%) runs RETICENT LONGEST TRAVELLER: JACKS PROFIT trained by P Evans, Abergavenny, 146 miles. RACE SUMMARY
ASK PETER is low mileage and promises to be well suited by this longer trip, so she’s marginally preferred to Art Expert in a tightly-knit affair. If Reticent settles better than last time, she could make her presence felt and Young Winston is no forlorn hope starting out for a new stable. 1-2-3: 1.ASK PETER (FR) 2.ART EXPERT 3.RETICENT KEY colours
