media. Bruning is the current Director of Communications, professor and previously Athletics Director of 5 years at Capital University located in the heart of Bexley, Ohio. He has been with Capital for 27 years and has seen hundreds of athletes come through the school’s variety of Division Three programs. Bruning reminds us that leveling up is not the only reason students should get involved in sports, and we found this reminder basic, but thought-provoking. It seems athletics has become obsessed with the idea that you need to level up, or else there’s no point in playing.

This is an ever-present phenomenon that exists amongst the transitioning years from high school athletics to college athletics. There is this idea that athletes feel they must play at the next level and are taught that the best are famous athletes whom live their lives solely to play their sport. This is the idea and conversation that needs to be given a reality check. We spoke with Dr. Stephen Bruning who reminded us that the fundamentals of sports are more important than the star-studded idea of sports we see in the

Instead of talking about leveling up, we recommend shifting the discussion to focus on personal development and achievement. If coaches and athletes focus on maximizing ability, those athletes who have the skill and physical build to play at that next level will. Importantly, a focus on personal development helps shift athletes away from thinking that they have to get to that next level or else their time has been wasted and toward an appreciation for getting the most out of themselves— which is, we argue, the primary purpose of athletics. Many athletes are highly talented. Some so talented that they may have the technical skill and knowledge needed to level up. The difference between a technically sound athlete and a pro

athlete is something that simply cannot be altered no matter how much conditioning one does; physical ability. Bruning says “the difference between a superstar athlete and all of the other levels of players is in large part due to their physical characteristics. For example, Shaquille O’Neal might have aspired to become the greatest jockey in the history of horse racing. However, because of his physical size, he never could have succeeded in that athletic pursuit.” This is a conversation that should happen when giving high school students a reality check about playing in college. What are their reasons for even playing? Do they want to play at the next level? Are they being realistic about the combination of skill and physical makeup? Do they honestly have the ability to take their talents and make a career out of it? Often, the reality is that the athlete has dreams of making if big but just doesn’t have the physical ability to do so. It’s okay to play through your school years and decide not to play college athletics—it’s what the clear majority of athletes do. Young athletes pull the greatest life lessons that could be learned from their years being on a team, and that can be enough. We see fame, scholarships, larger than life crowds cheering on the best quarterback around and that’s what we want. We forget what’s truly great about that star quarterback— his determination, patience, willingness to learn from others. What is important about the athletic experience is ensuring that all athletes understand how to apply the life lessons learned form athletic participation to life outside of athletics. The true purpose of athletics is to learn about yourself and use that knowledge to change as a person for the better.

Coaches can take this chance as their athletes’ mentor to teach them how to be more purposeful with setting their goals and helping them to translate the skills used in goal-setting to enhance life outside of athletics. Athletes dedicate hours of their lives to lifting, practice, watching film, but in the long run, athletes have short careers. Their time is limited based on the health and ability of their bodies. Not to mention, injuries can end a career in the blink of an eye. So, teaching athletes to translate the lessons they learn from athletics to their lives at a younger age will leave them with lessons that stick with them long after their years on a team. Athletics does not exist to make people famous. Athletics are meant to better the athlete as a human and a citizen. They’re meant to teach people to understand strengths and weaknesses and how to make changes to be better. Athletes learn how to work as a team with others to succeed. It’s a journey that takes time and attention to ultimately alter your approach to life. So, let’s change the conversation from the need to level up and be the best to focusing on personal achievement and learning to apply the lessons they’ve work so hard to learn.
