Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World
About
Junior Chamber International The Beginning of JCI JCI’s founder, Henry Giessenbier, Jr., decided to take responsibility for the progress of his community when he established JCI’s first Local Organization, in St. Louis, USA in 1915. When delegates from eight countries met in Mexico City in 1944, they agreed it was time to officially form Junior Chamber International (JCI). This tradition of uniting active citizens from diverse backgrounds fueled the JCI movement and set the groundwork for creating positive change that transcends boundaries.
JCI Around the World JCI is a worldwide community of young active citizens ages 18-40 who share the belief that in order to create positive change, we must take collective action to improve ourselves and the world around us. Engaging in activities ranging from sustainable development to international projects, we take responsibility for our communities while improving ourselves through participation, leadership and action. With about 5,000 Local Organizations, JCI’s international network connects more than 200,000 active citizens in 124 countries. It has consultative status with the Council of Europe, with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and with UNESCO. Members belong to a JCI Local Organization where they implement local projects. Local Organizations are affiliated to National Organizations that coordinate activities on national and international scales. This structure forms a worldwide grassroots movement creating global impact through local action. It encourages young people to become responsible citizens and to participate in efforts towards social and economic development, and international co-operation, good-will and understanding. Last year, JCI celebrated it 100 years movement worldwide.
The JCI Mission To provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.
The JCI Vision To be the leading global network of young active citizens.

Dear JCI Singapore Members and TOYP Nominees, JCI Singapore is proud to have successfully completed the Ten Outstanding Young Person Award for 2016. The TOYP Awards was established many years ago as the platform to recognize the achievements and community contribution of youths in Singapore. This awards also aims to inspire more youths to take action in their local community and bring positive impact not only in Singapore but also around the world. This year, we are proud to have many distinguish nominees across all categories this year and we do hope that we will have a nominee that we can send to the JCI World Congress in Quebec, Canada. This project’s success wouldn’t have been possible without the leadership and commitment of TOYP Chairperson Mr. Max Goh and his wonderful team of hardworking individuals. Special mention should also be given to the TOYP steering committee led by National Communications Director and 2014 TOYP Chairman Gregg Lewis and his committee in working hand in hand to achieve this great milestone in TOYP history. Finally, to our ever supportive Chief Adjudicator and Patron, JCI Senator Dr Dato Sri Derek Goh. Your continuous support and commitment was crucial in keeping the integrity and branding for the JCI Singapore TOYP award and we are eternally grateful. Wishing all TOYP nominees the very best! Do remember that no matter the outcome of the results, you are all winners in our hearts. We look forward to your continued contribution to the society and we hope the engagement doesn’t end here. Let’s strive to have more impactful collaborative projects that will create positive change in our society. Dainial Lim 2016 National President Junior Chamber International Singapore

JCI Chapters’ President Mr Alvin Yip Fung Kai
2016 Chapter President of JCI Marina The Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) Awards is a very meaningful awards ceremony to honour and appreciate young individuals who have made great contributions to all aspects of society. It is a yearly recognition given to those who have truly exceled in their areas of expertise and the success stories behind these grand achievements would inspire and encourage others to strive for such great heights as well. True wealth is not what is in the pocket but the size of the heart. All altruistic acts and gestures, no matter how big or small, create positive change in the community. Everything starts with a single small step; it takes hard work and perseverance to build up the momentum to greatness. To the awardees, the TYOP award is just a means to an end and not an end in itself. It will spur people on to create greater impacts all around society. Do continue your noble work and together, we can make the world a better place!
Ms Adelyne Fung

About
JCI TOYP Every year, JCI selects 10 outstanding young people under 40 who live the JCI Mission in extraordinary ways. Highlighting the accomplishments of these young active citizens in a variety of fields inspire us to be better and realize our full potential as active citizens.
The History of JCI TOYP The JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World Program (JCI TOYP) is the result of similar programs run by affiliated National Organizations of JCI. The original program was developed by Durwood Howes, President of The United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (JCI USA) during 1930-31. He conceived the idea of recognizing outstanding individuals by publishing a yearbook entitled, “America’s Young Men” which highlighted the work of twelve exemplary leaders each year. In 1938, the program was officially adopted by JCI USA. Since 1952, numerous JCI National Organizations have established their own Outstanding Young Persons Programs. Past recipients of national awards include such well-known personalities as Orson Welles, Howard Hughes, Nelson Rockefeller, John F. Kennedy, Henry Kissinger, Gerald Ford, Benigno Aquino, Bill Clinton and many, many more, all named before the age of 40 and before they had achieved national prominence. In 1983, JCI officially adopted the JCI Ten Outstanding Persons of the World Program and the first ceremony was held in Taipei, Taiwan. The maximum number of ten honorees received the TOYP Award, and the ceremony was hosted by Premier Sun Yun-Suan at the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall. Since then JCI has honored hundreds individuals from more than 50 nations. Each TOYP honoree has shown commitment to the motto, reminding all of us that, with creative enterprise and hard work, no problem are too difficult to solve. Each honoree is a living example of JCI’s belief that “Earth’s great treasure lies in human personality and that service to humanity is the best work of life”
JCI TOYP Award Categories Honorees would be selected from the following broad categories: • Business, economic, and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment. • Political, legal, and/or governmental affairs. • Academic leadership and/or accomplishment. • Cultural achievement. • Moral and/or environmental leadership. • Contribution to children, world peace, and/or human rights. • Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership. • Scientific and/or technological development. • Personal improvement and/or accomplishment. • Medical innovation.

Muhammad Nazir Bin Amir
Educator, Ministry of Education Academic Leadership and/or Accomplishment
When he first started teaching in a secondary school, Dr Nazir Amir found that hands-on lessons alone did not necessarily engage the academically ‘at-risk’ students that he teaches, as they were easily prone to distraction. Aiming to make his lessons more engaging, he initiated a part-time PhD research study in NIE (whilst teaching in school) to explore, identify and develop feasible teaching approaches that would work well for these students. This led him to develop the ‘Relevant, Appealing and Personal (RAP)’ pedagogical approach, where lessons need to be crafted to not only relate concepts to the real world and students’ own experiences, but also with the promise of making them appealing to keep the students intrinsically motivated and on task. The ‘RAP’ pedagogical approach has contributed to the engagement and motivation of Normal Technical (NT) students, getting them to develop positive attitudes towards their studies, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. Dr Nazir is very passionate about sharing, and continuously inspires and mentors professional communities of teachers in his school, across Singapore and regionally through his sharing and workshop sessions. He equips teachers with skills to craft out lessons to motivate students to come to school beyond the sake of attendance or passing examinations, developing a love for the subjects that they learn. He also continuously shares the instructional approaches and findings that are developed from his action-research work in international peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and conferences so that the wider education community may benefit from his classroom research. Dr Nazir has been invited to share and conduct hands-on workshops for teachers and university students both locally and at international platforms. Through Dr Nazir’s regular sharing sessions, teachers are constantly inspired to make lessons ‘Relevant, Appealing and Personal (RAP)’ for their own students. For his outstanding contributions to teaching and professional development of teachers in Singapore and beyond, Dr Nazir was awarded the ‘Presidents’ Award for Teachers (2014)’, the ‘Outstanding Physics Teacher Award (2015) by the Institute of Physics Singapore (IPS)’, the ‘Teacher-Researcher Paper Prize (2013)’, the ‘Fellow of the Academy of Singapore Teachers (2012)’, three ‘Dean’s Commendation for Research Awards by NTU/NIE (2014, 2012)’, the ‘Inspiration Award for Science Teaching (2012)’, and four ‘Outstanding Contribution to School Awards (2015, 2012, 2009, 2005)’. He further led educators in his school to clinch a ‘Gold’ award at the MOE Innergy Awards 2015, a ‘Gold’ award at the Singapore In House IQC Assessment 2015, and a ‘Merit’ award at the Public Service 21st Century (PS21) Excel Awards 2015. He is also a recipient of the ‘Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program (2016)’.

David Pong is the CEO & co-founder of WateROAM, a water innovation social enterprise that develops simple, portable, durable & affordable water filtration systems to help affected communities in disaster-hit sites and rural developments obtain clean drinking water. These systems are specially built to bring about the quickest access to clean drinking water at disaster-hit sites, and are deployed in a manner to help promote social change in rural development areas. WateROAM was founded in 2014 when David met a group of friends during his studies in the National University of Singapore. Each of them had a passion to see clean water improve lives around the region, especially with a heightening awareness of a major global water crisis and increasing frequency of natural disasters. David decided that they had to put a firm foot down in helping solve this crisis, and rallied them into founding a proper startup that focuses on innovative water solutions to solve water issues in hard-to-reach rural places. The team decided to name the startup WateROAM, in light of roaming to provide clean water access globally regardless of terrain difficulty. Since then, WateROAM has benefited more than 15,000 beneficiaries by providing water filtration systems deployed through various NGOs in the East Malaysia Flood Relief in Jan 2015, Vanuatu Cyclone Relief in Apr 2015, Nepal Earthquake Relief in May 2015, and in Myanmar Flood Relief in Aug 2015. David believes that it is never too early to give back to those in need globally, especially since many Singaporeans have blessed abundantly with access to education and resources. He has since decided to dedicate his youth to set up WateROAM as a well-managed and sustainable enterprise, so that lives, living & livelihoods can be impacted all around the world continuously through access to clean water. In its early days, WateROAM clinched the top award at the 2014 Singapore Humanitarian Water Filtration Design Competition, and the Rising Hydropreneur Star award at the Singapore International Water Week 2014. In April 2015, the startup was recognized as one of 5 investment-worthy social enterprises in Singapore at the "Learning by Investing" programme organized by the Asia Centre for Social Entrepreneurship & Philantrophy (ACSEP). Emily Teng
Founder, Blessings in a Bag Contribution to Children, World Peace, and/or Human Rights
Emily Teng is Chief of Awesome. She is on a mission to improve the lives of others and motivate young people to believe that their unique talents and inner-awesomeness can change the world – but she’s not going it alone. With an army of WorldChangeAgents (volunteers) through ‘Blessings in a Bag’, she works her way to make sure everyone is celebrated for their own unique-ness and inspires the community to put on their invisible capes of awesome-ness and equip them with the tools to drive their own radical acts of kindness. She has made sure that WorldChangeAgents step up to the plate to manage on-going programs for vulnerable communities - locally and regionally - as well as run CSR campaigns for the big corporates. Emily is also co-founder of The Patatas (http://www.thepatatas.com/) and acts as a ‘matchmaker’ to bring together those who want to help with those who need it. Raised in Jakarta, Melbourne and Singapore, the ex-radio DJ was inspired from a young age to serve the needs of the community around her. She believes that when you put love out into the world, it comes back in the most beautiful way. In 2008, at just 19 years old, Emily started Blessings in a Bag (http://www.blessingsinabag.co) to provide a connection between those in Singapore who wanted to reach out and NGOs within the region who needed the help. She and her team of WorldChangeAgents collected and organized tons of donations before rallying travellers to carry Blessing Bag Packs to be dropped off at desginated ‘drop zones’ whenever they flew off to various South-East Asian destinations. Other items that could be shipped were packed lovingly by the team. No matter the method of getting much needed supplies across, they all were used as incentives for local communities to attend family, health and hygiene as well as educational workshops. At least 150,000 bundles and Blessing Bag Packs have been distributed and used as incentives for communities in need in places such as Cambodia, Philippines, India, Vietnam and Indonesia. In 2014, Emily’s attention turned to issues closer to home and she began working with young Singaporeans to support the communities on their doorsteps. She launched the ‘Beyond Awesome’ programme to inspire kids from low-income families to dream big through a variety of activities focused on creativity, storytelling and writing. The programmed has run for at least six months and has seen dramatic transformations in some of the kids already. For instance, kids who acted out or openly declared their dislike for reading are now the ones who enthusiastically ask for a reading buddy to help read alongisde them and stand up in front of their peers to read stories aloud next to volunteer storytellers. She now plans to launch a new webcast series, Life with Emily, discussing issues that affect youth in Singapore such as failure, celebrating who you are and taking the path less traveled. Her guests will include a variety of individuals across the region from celebrities to influencers or even your next-door neighbor! Her achievements within the community space have been recognised by the likes of the Yahoo! Singapore 9 Awards, Cosmopolitan Singapore’s ‘Fun Fearless Female’, Singapore International Foundation’s Young Social Entrepreneur Program, and the GOOD 100 Global Changemaker. With her wise motto, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”, the social entrepreneur believes in a world where everyone can (and should) find it within themselves to have the courage to be who they are and be kind to others. “By unleashing our inner awesome,” Emily says, “We can all change the world”.

Founder, I Am Talented Humanitarian and/or Voluntary Leadership
‘A head for figures and a heart for others’; this is often used to describe David Hoe. A newly-minted educator and recent Economics (Honours) graduate from the National University of Singapore (NUS), David took a route less travelled. His university education didn’t come easy, as he took an extended eight-year trek from the Normal (Technical) stream in Secondary School to the end of Junior College. However, David is fully aware that his path to his dream of becoming an educator was not forged by his sheer effort alone; but by standing on the shoulders of the many giants. In the same way, he seeks to live out the attitude of paying it forward. As part of his philosophy of giving as he has received, David has initiated many social empowerment programmes that seek to benefit youth without access to opportunities. I Am Talented (IAT), for instance, seeks to empower youth with a simple yet powerful message – to unearth their talents and interests. To do this, IAT creates platforms for participants to explore a range of skillsets such as photography, programming, robotics, entrepreneurship, journalism, and the like, in partnership with the Central Singapore Community Development Council. Beyond mere discovery, IAT instructors share with participants how, and where to further develop and hone their talents. Now into its fifth iteration, IAT sees past participants even returning to volunteer of their own accord to contribute to event programming. David continuously draws strength from IAT participants as many begin irresolute but end feeling empowered; and from instructors and corporations willingly devoting time and energies on a pro-bono basis to empower youth. Another youth empowerment initiative that illustrates David’s passion for helping others is Collaborate, which seeks to empower pre-university students with relevant information useful in their decisions as to which university courses to choose. Supported by the National Youth Council, this is done via a novel human library format, whereby participants are linked up to several people-in-industry to ask questions with regard to career pathways and expectations in a focus-group setting. Though this platform does not ensure that participants will make the perfect decision, but it has surely helped many individuals to make better decisions. Beyond larger-scale programmes, David firmly believes in the value of inspiring other youth to serve and make a difference in the lives of others too. During his time at Tembusu College (NUS), he founded TMentors, an in-house mentoring programme, where undergraduates tutor and mentor New Town Secondary School students on a weekly basis, one-on-one. Resource-intensive and a coordination feat, David grew this community outreach project ground-up by personally liaising with the relevant parties, and spurring like-minded student volunteers within Tembusu College to action. Though having started the programme many years ago, David still facilitates training sessions and gives talks to the students frequently. He is at present advising other similar ground-up mentoring initiatives helmed by like-minded youth. One such programme is Cooperate. Through Junior Chamber International, David hopes to live out its creed of service to humanity as the best work of life, and create more opportunities for people to serve and greater positive social change via its networks of young active citizenry. Through collaboration and the leveraging of differing strengths, David hopes to create sustainable impact, and inspire others to do likewise.

Wan Yue
Junior Principal Investigator, A-Star Scientific and/or Technological Development
Similar to a complex machine, the cell is made up of tens of thousands of macromolecules, each of which has its own shape. Knowing the shapes of each component is key to understanding how they fit together for proper functioning of the cell. When Yue Wan started her PhD, one major class of macromolecules, RNA, is known to be very important for cellular function. However, deciphering the shapes of each individual RNA to understand its impact on human cells is slow and tedious. To overcome this difficulty, Yue Wan married techniques from different fields, including the RNA biochemistry, genomics, and yeast genetics, to develop a new technique that allows the mapping of thousands of RNA shapes at one time. This breakthrough technology was published in the top journal Nature, and highlighted as a method to watch in the year 2012 by Nature Methods, and opened the field of RNA genomics to allow first glimpses into the organization of cellular RNAs. Armed with this new method, Yue Wan and colleagues were able to study how these RNA mini-machines can change its shape to allow an organism to adapt to environmental changes in a timely manner. This resulted in high impact publication in the journal Molecular Cell, whereby Yue Wan identified RNA components that changed shape with temperature. In addition, Yue also discovered that human to human variations can also result in RNA shape changes, potentially explaining why individuals are different from each other. This surprising discovery lead to another high impact publication in Nature, and provides potential explanations to how variations in certain individuals could cause disease. Since returning to start her own lab at the Genome Institute of Singapore, Yue Wan is interested in continuing developing and utilizing new genomics technologies in understanding human health. Her work in RNA technologies allowed her to be awarded the Society in Science fellowship, which is a Swiss fellowship that is awarded internationally to outstanding scientists who use cutting edge technologies to solve important societal problems. She aims to apply these technologies to study infectious organisms, including pathogenic bacteria and Dengue and Zika viruses, in order to understand how RNA shapes and networks in these pathogens allow it to infect human cells. Through understanding microbial pathogenicity, she aims to contribute to new anti-microbials/anti-virals or vaccines against these pathogens and assist in the global fight against antimicrobial resistance. Yue is also selected as “40 under 40” by the Prestige magazine in 2015, and is a recipient of the Young Scientist Award and a TR35 Asia Finalist. Besides doing science, Yue Wan is also passionate about mentoring the younger generation of scientists and has taken on numerous interns in her lab from polytechnic institutions. She aims to share her scientific training to her students and believes that a good education is the true leveling ground for all individuals. Yue is also passionate about promoting women in science. As an ambassador of the Girls2Pioneers program with UN women, Yue hopes to change the demographics of science such that males and females hold equally important positions in science leadership and education. Through JCI TOYP award, she aims to connect with other young leaders and to inspire young women to follow their dreams to achieve success in both work and life.

Kim Whye Kee
Founder, Qi Pottery Personal Improvement and/or Accomplishment
KIM WHYE KEE (b.1979) spent a decade of his youth in prison for his involvement in gangs. Having grown up in a single parent family, with his father who eventually gambled all the family's assets away, Kim grew up to be resentful and bitter inside. This was alongside the bullying he received when he was in lower secondary school which all culminated into him joining a gang to seek revenge. He eventually rose up to the rank of 'Headman' and at one point had strength of a thousand men under him. The law eventually caught up with him and he was detained without trial under the Criminal Law Detention Act in 1998. Kim was released after four years of sentence, but was incarcerated again a few months later for drug abuse and for his role as a 'Headman'. On his third imprisonment, his father's sudden departure and his discovery for pottery turned his life around. He decided to focus his energy and time into art. Upon his release, Whye Kee started volunteering at Taman Jurong Grassroots Meet-The-People session every Monday, and found a niche in dealing primarily with drugs and gang-related cases. He also enrolled in LASALLE College of the Arts and went on to graduate with a BA Hons. Degree in Fine Arts at LASALLE. He has since founded his own pottery studio, Qi Pottery. As the co-founder of Beacon of Life (BoL) and Beacon of Life Academy (BoLA), an initiative working with ex-convicts and at- risk youths, respectively, Kim finds strength through these programmes in contributing back to the community. Since 2010, BoL has helped many ex inmates pursue higher education and has proven to be a valuable support group for the community. Amongst BoL's members include lawyer Darren Tan, social worker Weeyvn Toh, current NTU undergraduate Sunny Swee. Apart from the weekly soccer trainings that draw the youth in, there is a focus on holistic development as well – through tuition and also sharing sessions. As the founder and chief advisor of BoLA, Whye Kee not only spends time planning for the weekly activities for the 40 boys under his wing, he also commits a few hours everyday to mentoring and hanging out with them to know them better. He draws street credibility and great respect from his reformation from an ex-headman of a street gang to a degree holder involved in grassroots and community work. Despite his raw talent and passion in art, upon graduation Whye Kee put aside his dreams of embarking on a career as an artist and dedicated his time into doing community work instead. While his involvement in BoL and BoLA was rewarding, it was very time consuming and emotionally draining as well. There were months when he did not draw any monthly income, but that did not stop him from reaching out. He committed his entire savings into helping the youths and ex-convicts in Taman Jurong. To Whye Kee, saving money for himself can wait. Afterall he came from a similarly-disadvantaged background and understands what it is like to be on an empty stomach, as such, his creed is to serve others before himself. The world keeps spinning and there are always people left behind; those who could not catch up. Through JCI's network, Whye Kee hopes to know more people, to exchange experiences, ideas and methods in order to implement better programmes and solutions. He also hopes to make known the causes he is fighting for and in turn draw in more likeminded people to help fight for the cause.
