iSeries is an electric heat pump air condensed. This technology can move thermal energy against thermal gradient (from a lower temperature source to a higher temperature one). Using a refrigerant thermodynamic cycle (gas R410a), up to 80% of the energy moved to indoor is renewable energy of outdoor air. The remaining 20% it’s the electric power consumption. For this reason with RES directive, the European Community has stated that electric heat pump it’s a renewable energy based technology. iSeries range is fully compliant with both 2013 and 2014 steps of ERP/Ecodesign directive.
iSeries is the only system now available that can mix direct expansion and hydronic technology with multisplit domestic outdoor & indoor units range. This option is made possible tahnks to HK (Hydrokit) unit which is connected with hydronic systems such as: underfloor heating/cooling systems, fancoil units, etc. This brand new feature makes iSeries unique. There are other competitors that give the possibility to mix DX units with hydronic kits but their solution is set with VRF outdoor and indoor units.This mean that if you want to install room air conditioning units you have to install EEV (Electronic Expansion Valve) too. This is due to a big difference between VRF indoor units and room air conditionig units: every VRF unit has an EEV, in a multisplit type system all EEVs are in the outdoor unit. Moreover, VRF piping is more complicated than multisplit one: header joint or distribution kits are required, every portion or component is welded.

With iSeries system you can use room air conditioning indoor units mixed with hydrokit, there are no header joint or distribution kits required and no welding in piping. It’s now clear the difference between our solution and the others’ one: in order to install a system with DX units and hydronic systems with iSeries it’s possible to mix every standard indoor units with HK and use the same outdoor units of multipslit range. With other products, you have to choose VRF units and components. Key points:

In fact, it is very common for every brand to have the same indoor units for mono and multi application. iSeires has not only this feature but has the same outdoor units for both application, mono & multi. iSeries indoor units are no more divided by nominal capacity (ie. 7.000 btu/h, 9.000 btu/h; 2,2 kW, 2,8 kW, etc) but only into 4 categories (size). Every size has a maximum heat output: i.e. size A 4 kW max. After installation, every indoor unit of any size will automatically provide power (within the range of its size) in order to follow thermal loads of rooms and mantain temperature set point. Every HVAC system requires a thermic design of the maximum contemporary loads of rooms. If this design is correct (in other words, the power of outdoor unit cover the sum of maximum contemporary internal loads) all the indoor units in iSeries sytems will follow the trend of indoor loads in every room (more load means more power, less load means less power and less electric consumption).

With the matching table (user friendly and smart compared to our competitor ones) it’s very easy to find the right configuration. Checking all the indoor units power it’s no more mandatory because, as described, the system will auto balance itself in order to provide the request thermal load.
iSeries models have great power modulation, thanks to the best DC Inverter technology. The range is very wide from 10% to 130% of nominal capacity.

Technical operation range is from -50°C up to +50°C. Within this range iSeries protects itself implementing operational shut down. There are a lot of heat pump installations working at up to -30°C in Nordic areas and cooling installations operating in outside temperature of over 50°C. In these extreme conditions capacity and efficiency are lower than in nominal conditions, but it’s very important to mark this wide opearative temperature range because it’s related with the great quality of iSeries products. Every iSeries outdoor unit has two heater coils: one (70 W) fitted in the metal base of outdoor unit prevents formation of ice during heating mode; the other one (30 W), placed in the compressor, cuts in to prevent compressor liquid from freezing during stand-by time. These two heater coils and fully managed by electronic control and will be switched on only when necessary (ie. Outdoor temperature below 0° C) Rust-proof treatment: providing the best protection against corrosion and rust formation even under hard conditions suc as salin mist.

When a heat pump is operating in the heating mode or heat cycle, the outdoor air is relatively cool and the outdoor coil acts as an evaporator. Under certain conditions of temperature and relative humidity, frost might form on the surface of the outdoor coil. The layer of frost will interfere with the operation of the heat pump by making the pump work harder and, therefore, inefficiently. The frost must be removed. A heat pump has a cycle called a defrost cycle, which removes the frost from the outdoor coil. The operation mode switch in cooling mode in order to increase outdoor coil. During this defrost cycle the indoor unit might be operating with the fan blowing cool air. To prevent this normally indoor fans are stopped.
DEFROST OPERATION
iSeries managed defrost cycle with Intelligent Defrost and Non Stop Operation. If it’ not strictly necessary, iSeries does not change operation mode. Defrosting is achieved by the use of hot, uncondensed refrigerant, without requiring a reverse cycle of the flow of refrigerant through the system. A portion of hot gas still reachs indoor units coils that, in this way, stay at an higher temperature than in a standard defrost situation. So it’s possible to supply heating to indoor spaces.

This operation is managed with Dinamic Cold Draft: if the temperature of indoor units coils is higher than rooms one, indoor fan speed is set to LL and a small quantity of heat is provide. Otherwise, if temperature of coils is lower fan speed is stopped (no cold drafting).
AIR TO AIR + AIR TO WATER SYSTEM Here it is an example of mixed iSeries system: G80 + HKE + 3 Indoor Units. This configuration allow maximum flexibility: you can use only hydronic system (underfloor heating during winter), only DX units (air cooling during summer) or both these two technologies (DX units used as “booster” in heating mode or dryers in cooling mode). Hydrokit unit is a centralized type, otherwise DX units are single control type. For this reason, HK set the operative mode for all the system (HK in cooling all the system in cooling; HK in heating all the system in heating). If you try to set one or more DX units in a different mode than HK one, they go in stand by.
ENERGY FROM THE AIR
Also in mixed application, iSeries system automatically manage power distribution between all the items. If hydronic system and DX units are installed in open space all the power is supply in the same room (no division). If hydronic system and DX units are in different rooms, power will be divided matching every single request. Normally DX units reach set point faster than hydronic application. In this case, the control system will divert power towards HK unit in order to reach water set temperature in less time. A good design of the system is very important. Check the maximum contemporary power (at design temperature, ie -7°C).

Hydrokit units are embedded with Aquaset regulation. Aquaset has been deveMANUEL loped by Technibel (one of Argoclima’s Company) since 1992.
