Pork Ramen @ MTN 1305 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice (424) 465-3313 | mtnvenice.com Much has been made of chef Travis Lett’s $20 version of the Japanese staple, but the pleasure of it justifies the cost. The broth is nourishing, and you won’t leave hungry. The two pork versions, dripping with umami, just skirt heaviness. Additions like nira (garlic, chives, fermented black bean paste) and komatsuna (a spicy, leafy green) lend freshness and depth of flavor.
2
Carrot Cake Waffle @ Hash 12121 Bluff Creek Drive, Playa Vista (310) 282-8501 | hashplayavista.com Hidden treasure is usually more desirable, right? And the carrot cake waffle is no different. Hash, a new eatery tucked down a side street off Bluff Creek Drive on the Campus at Playa Vista, serves up a popular breakfast treat from co-owner Peter Georges’ New York City past: a carrot cake waffle with pineapple inside and cream cheese drizzle on top.

Lox, Lox & More Lox @ Wexler’s Deli 616 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica (424) 744-8671 | wexlersdeli.com Go for the lox, stay for the lox. The fish is the thing at Wexler’s in Santa Monica. You can eat it there or take it home and do things with it. Wondrous things! How about a bagel with doublesmoked pastrami lox? Or a white fish salad? Maybe BBQ cod and scrambled eggs? Sturgeon, kippered salmon and smoked sable provide other opportunities to get creative.
4
Drunken Noodles @ Unity LA 6225 W. Century Blvd., Westchester | (424) 702-1234 hyatt.com You might not expect to find a delicious, authentic Thai dish at a restaurant inside an “airport hotel,” but the Hyatt Regency’s “unquestionably un-airport” restaurant is all about showcasing L.A.’s culinary riches. The menu updates seasonally, but this dish of wide rice noodles tossed with crispy tofu, Chinese broccoli, fried eggs, Thai basil, radish sprouts and chicken is a perennial favorite, says Executive Chef Charles Fusco.

6
Black Rice Breakfast Bowl @ Wheel House 2954 Washington Blvd., Mar Vista (424) 289-9167 | wheelhousecheese.com This impressive artisan cheese shop on Washington Boulevard is now serving brunch, thanks to a new partnership with chef Brad Miller. The Black Rice Breakfast Bowl is filling, fresh and fiery: a hearty poached egg, turkey sausage and avocado, with radish for crunch, plus kimchi and a drizzle of bulgogi (“fire meat”) vinaigrette to deliver your morning wake-up call.
Adrienne Borlongan, co-owner of this new ice cream shop in Venice, has dreamed up a truly Californian treat: Avo Toastada. The delightful twist on the ubiquitous avocado toast serves avocado ice cream on a sweetcorn “toastada” with fruit “salsa,” then drizzled with your choice of either condensed milk or a touch of lime, olive oil and salt. But hurry —it’s only on the menu through April.
7
Pâté Platter @ Le Petit Café 2842 Colorado Ave., Santa Monica (310) 829 6792 | lepetitcafebonjour.com The simple pleasures of fresh olives, pickles, lettuce and tomato ready the palate for the complex flavors of calf’s liver pâté, on the richer and heartier spectrum of French cooking. It’s a stronger and bolder flavor than the standard goose, duck and pork liver; the texture is soft with a very slight graininess. Pair with a good Burgundy to reboot your palate between bites.

Morfia’s has a real brick smoker, crucial for getting the traditional product. Real Texas barbecue has a chewy exterior called bark, a rosy ring where the smoke has penetrated the meat, and an interior that is moist and tender but not mushy....There are many dessert choices at Morfia’s and they’re all made in-house, so there’s a good chance you’ll find something you like.” — Excerpts from restaurant review by Richard Foss

Cioppino @ Cantalini’s Salerno Beach 193 Culver Blvd., Playa del Rey (310) 821-0018 | salernobeach.com Cantalini’s cooks up a perfect example of the classic Italian seafood stew with Manilla clams, shrimp, New Zealand mussels, scallops and calamari. The savory tomato-based broth is seasoned beautifully but does not overpower the natural flavors of the seafood. A side of toasted garlic bread comes in handy to sop up every delicious drop.
9
Bludso’s Pork Ribs @ The Proud Bird 11022 Aviation Blvd., Westchester (310) 670-3093 | theproudbird.com Already a destination restaurant, The Proud Bird has extensively remodeled to build more excitement around its aviation theme and reboot the menu with an eclectic food hall concept. That made space for a fortuitous partnership with South L.A.’s celebrated Bludso’s BBQ. Smoky and spicy, the pork ribs, beef brisket and pulled pork is every bit as good as the original.

Mezze Maniche alla Gricia @ Felix Trattoria 1023 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice (424) 387-8622 | felixla.com When a dish showcases just a few ingredients, each one needs to be a rock star for the pasta to sing. With chef Evan Funke at the helm, rest assured that great care is taken in every possible way. The guanciale (pork cheek), house-made pasta and even the pecorino Romano DOP (assurance of provenance), make your mouth suckle with pure pleasure. Good luck trying this at home.
Sharkey’s seeks out organic, natural and local ingredients to prepare a multitude of fresh fare served fast, and there’s much more to the menu than tacos and burritos. Build a “power plate” around lean proteins like chicken, steak or fish — including wild-caught Alaskan salmon that’s grilled quickly to achieve a palate-pleasing texture while keeping the fish juicy and tender.
12 Classic Fried Chicken @ Mama Joan’s Soul Food 5496 Centinela Ave., Westchester (310) 670-5900
What might be the best fried chicken in town is hiding in a strip mall between a barber shop and a 7-Eleven. The breading is perfectly crunchy and spicy, while the meat inside remains tender and juicy — everything fried chicken should be. The meat comes fresh from the fryer, too hot to touch, so whet your appetite with cornbread dressing and collard greens.

13 Wild Spanish Octopus @ CafĂŠ del Rey 4451 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey (310) 823-6395 | cafedelreymarina.com Octopus is tricky to prepare. Cook it too hot or for too long and it gets rubbery. Executive Chef David Vilchez achieves an exquisitely soft texture by braising the meat at just the right temperature, then flash-grilling for a touch of char. Butternut squash puree, roasted eggplant, farro, pine nuts and tomato agrodolce make for an inspired supporting cast.
14 The Patrona Burger @ La Tostaderia 1121 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice (213) 624-2378 | latostaderia.info
With a patty made of shrimp, Oaxaca cheese and crispy potato, the Patrona Burger is not your typical Mexican fare — but it sure is catching on. Executive Chef Fernando Villagomez, who invented the dish, says the secret is balancing flavors like mango, avocado and radish to cut the greasiness and, of course, crisping up the potato for texture.

16 Brighton Beach Benedict @ Doma Kitchen 4325 Glencoe Ave., Marina Del Rey (310) 301-0582 | domakitchen.com
Owner Angie Corrente is from Ukraine, chef Kristina Miksyte is from Lithuania, and Doma Kitchen boasts some of the best home recipes from around the world. Sure, you’ve tried eggs Benedict with smoked salmon instead of Canadian bacon, but Doma adds a twist: the eggs are resting above an arugula salad, perched atop two crispy potato latkes. Crunchy meets creamy, with dill, onions and capers, too.
L.A. Gastronomy is a funky little place with avant-garde décor that includes psychedelic walls, a Balinese guardian statue by the door, and a mannequin wearing lingerie and an army helmet. The menu is just as eclectic, including this exceptionally good tuna poke bowl of seaweed salad, masago caviar and scallions, with daikon and toasted sesame to keep tart and smoky flavors in balance.

Waiting on the side to add some zing are shallots, pickled mustard greens, fried whole chilies and a slices of fresh lime.

It’s like a mini-salad bar, with pockets of Asian slaw, cooked mushrooms and kale, and a creamy miso. It’s all about lean protein, fresh vegetables and bold Asian flavors.
19 Strawberry Shortcake Crêpe @ Café Solar 6224 W. Manchester Ave., Westchester | (424) 227-6486 cahuengagroup.com
French crêpes are an infinitely customizable culinary delight at this bright and airy neighborhood hangout. Go fruity with fillings like strawberry jam or cinnamon apple, or decadent with chocolate sauce, Nutella and whipped cream. 21 Pescado Zarandeado @ Coni’Seafood 4532 S. Centinela Ave., Del Rey (310) 881-9644 | coniseafood.com
Pulitzer Prize-winning Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold called this dish “one of the wonders of the seafood world” — “a broad, thin fish sliced neatly in half on the vertical axis, roasted slowly over a smoky fire … [after being] dabbed with some mixture of citrus, spices and mayonnaise.” We just call it pure heaven.
Chef Rain Pantana puts a contemporary Californian spin on Japanese cooking by infusing flavors from his Southeast Asian heritage into creative sushi roll combinations. His eponymous Rain Roll pairs amberjack with shrimp tempura, spicy tuna and jalapenos, held together by secret sauces that provide a delightful kick. You could stick to classic sushi at Wabi, but the menu tempts diners to try something new.
22 Lamb and Falafel Meze Plate @ Dune 9 Dudley Ave., Venice (424) 744-8060 | dune.kitchen
Middle Eastern cuisine gets a contemporary makeover in this hip neighborhood hangout where vivid flavors shine brightly. The best way to survey this vibrant culinary territory is through the variety of a meze plate, with green-herb falafel, lamb meatballs with pine nuts, pickled onions and turnips, peppers, olives, cabbage salad, olive hummus, and grilled pita topped with tangy za’atar.

23 Squid Ink Paella @ Chez Tex 218 Main St., Venice (310) 314-1314 | cheztex.com
What was once the art gallery Obsolete is now a fashionable eatery with gorgeously plated seasonal dishes. Hayley Feldman and husband Jesse “Tex” Feldman offer what she calls “New American” food. One standout is their Squid Ink Paella, with whole shrimp, calamari and/or Manila clams supported by Spanish bomba rice, house-made fish stock and Moroccan saffron.
24 Blue Smoothie Bowl @ Great White 1604 Pacific Ave., Venice (424) 744-8403 greatwhitevenice.com
“Sandy feet welcome,” declares Sam Trude, owner of the new restaurant where Seed Kitchen once stood. His chefs Alex Thomopolous (daughter of TV personality and cookbook author Cristina Ferrare) and Cassy Pugh have created the bright and yummy Blue Smoothie Bowl, a vegan and gluten-free mix of banana, pineapple, passion fruit, e3 live blue algae, chia, seasonal fruit and house-made granola.

Audrey Hepburn @ Alley 12223 W. Washington Blvd., Culver West (310) 596-8257 | alleyloungela.com What self-respecting Angelena does not want to be associated with Ms. Audrey Hepburn? This signature cocktail from Alley mixes modern and classic by adding muddled cucumber and two dashes of orange bitters to Aperol (an Italian apertivo), then topping with champagne. The drink is refreshing and slightly bitter, like life itself. Sip it and dream.

Blackberry Collins @ Cassia 1314 7th St., Santa Monica (310) 393-6699 | cassiala.com
Hibiscus Refresco @ Tallula’s 118 Entrada Dr., Santa Monica (310) 526-0027 | tallulasrestaurant.com
There’s something cheeky about taking an old-school colonial drink, like the Tom Collins, and giving it a little Asian zshush. Cassia transforms something old into something very new by adding lime, blackberries and a Thai chili kick to Loft and Bear Artisanal Vodka (a local L.A. brand). The bright tartness of the berries wakes you right up. And, oh that color!
Another glorious-to-look-at cocktail, Tallula’s Hibiscus Refresco brings the sunset to mind — if you’re lucky, you just watched it before heading into this just-off-the-beach joint. Spirit Works Sloe Gin, Opuntia Prickly Pear Brandy and Hibiscus Agua Fresca make up the bulk of the drink, with a bitter assist from Bruto Americano. Try it with the Nachos Sencillo.

Penicillin @ Sam First 6171 W. Century Blvd., Westchester (424) 800-2006 | samfirstbar.com
Chef Josiah Citrin created the restaurant’s eponymous drink by adding the trendiest of ingredients — charcoal — to transform the quotidian margarita into something special: The Midnight Margarita. El Charro and lime round out the edges. The smokiness of the cocktail works swimmingly with Charcoal’s grilled chicken wings, rubbed with oregano, chili and vinegar.
Just because you feel a cold coming on is no excuse to stay home. The Penicillin cocktail at Sam First is just what the doctor ordered … sorta. Pig’s Nose blended Scotch whisky is mixed with fresh-squeezed lemon, honey and a housemade ginger syrup, topped off with a spritz of single-malt Scotch whisky and a slice of candied ginger to keep things cute. Listen to jazz and mellow out, cat.
