Seafood by the Sea in

Marina del Rey Marina del Rey — “The King’s Marina?” The seaside community doesn’t even have a mayor, let alone a king. Perhaps the founders would have chosen a different name if they could have foreseen the area’s growing reputation as a unique culinary hotspot for seafood lovers. Marina del Mariscos, perhaps? That has a nice ring to it.

Café Del Rey

13950 Panay Way (310) 822-4144 chart-house.com

4451 Admiralty Way (310) 823-6395 cafedelreymarina.com

As a company, Chart House boasts that theirs is “a dining experience you can’t replicate anywhere else.” That may seem like a tall order for a group with 28 locations nationally, but you’ll find things here that you won’t find in their Cincinnati location — namely an ocean view and superb Chilean sea bass.

The quality of entrées, excellent service and brilliant harbor views come with a price, but you won’t find it on the restaurant’s expansive happy hour menu, where scallop ceviche, Dungeness crab cake and steelhead trout hold court from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. daily. Steamed clams can be part of a create-yourown seafood sampler at The Warehouse

The Hollywood club vibe and chic interior are in stark contrast to the boats in the harbor at this restaurant inside Marina Del Rey Hotel. A nice marriage of the trendy and traditional brings Japanese cuisine such as Hamachi and charred octopus to compliment the standard American offerings like lobster rolls and steamed mussels.

The uninitiated should be forgiven for thinking that The Warehouse’s shipwreck fantasy vibe is a calculated effort to capitalize on the reemergence of pirate chic. In reality, the restaurant is nearly as old as the marina itself, and much of the seafaring décor is authentic. Go for the ambiance, stay for the swordfish or halibut. D i n e r ’ s

This dockside sports bar is a crowd pleaser. Many just appreciate having a friendly spot to grab a beer and

watch the boats sail in. On the other hand, the award-winning cuisine — including the ahi tuna steak and crab leg combo — are worthy of the accolades oft bestowed upon the fish and chips. 2016 Westside Dining Guide

Beachside Restaurant & Bar

Sapori Italian Restaurant

14160 Palawan Way (310) 439-3033 pacificahotels.com/ beachside-restaurant

What does it take to make a hotel restaurant feel like a spot for locals? A daily happy hour with buy one, get one for $1 drink specials is a good start. Add a menu featuring panroasted Mahi and scallops from Maine for good measure. A beautiful view of Mother’s Beach completes the experience.

13723 Fiji Way (310) 821-1740 sapori-mdr.com

Lest we forget that Italy has over 4,500 miles of coastline, the menu at this quaint Fisherman’s Village restaurant has plenty of Italian seafood to choose from. The Italian word for “seafood” is pescatora, as in tonnarelli pescatora, a perfect spaghetti dish to order if you want a little bit of everything. Ahi Tuna Poke at Killer Shrimp

When rock musician Lee Michaels first opened his restaurant, there was really no need for a menu since there was basically only one dish: the Killer Shrimp. It’s still the first thing on the menu, and a must-try for any seafood lover in the Marina. There’s magic in that secret sauce.

Eat Like an Italian

in Venice

When developer Abbot Kinney died in 1920, so did much of his plans for “Venice of America,” initially imagined as a replica of the famed Italian city. The Italian flair dwindled as Venice evolved into the eclectic community it is today, but the spirit of Italy has reemerged as new restaurants and old favorites have made Venice one of L.A.’s hottest neighborhoods for Italian cuisine.

Barrique

Casa Ado

796 Main St. (310) 399-9010 barriquevenice.com

12 W. Washington Blvd. (310) 577-2589 casaado.com

Just like Venice itself, a dinner at Barrique is memorable thanks to the mix of old and new. Chef Antonio Mure is still here from the restaurant’s early days as Ado, but the management has changed. The candle-lit ambience of this cute cottage is whimsical, the wine menu is vast (but almost entirely Italian) and the food is superb.

Like sister location Barrique, Ado is dark, intimate and authentic. It is this combination that leaves many patrons and critics reluctantly using the word “magical” when describing their dinner experience. Yes, Casa Ado is technically in Marina del Rey, but it’s also too close to the canals to leave off this list.

Ravioli di Zucca — pumpkin ravioli sautéed with butter, sage and parmigiana

Centanni Trattoria 1700 Lincoln Blvd. (310) 314-7275 centannivenice.com

12

2016 Westside Dining Guide

If anyone in particular is responsible for the new wave of Italian eateries in Venice, it might be these guys. The menu and wine list are authentic enough, but the execution is decidedly modern. Centanni is also among the more affordable options on this list. Nearly all entrees are $20 or less, with many options for half that price.

Classic Italian bruschetta with fresh tomatoes, basil and olive oil

Danny’s Venice

Venice Cucina

23 Windward Ave. (310) 566-5610 dannysvenice.com

Gone are the days when gondoliers traveled the original Venice canals in red and white striped shirts and straw hats, but one of the gondolas ended up on the ceiling at Danny’s. The menu has dabbled in Italian cuisine in the form of pizza and pasta, but makes this list for preserving the history of a time when Venice Beach took its cues from the Queen of the Adriatic.

209 Windward Ave. (310) 392-6300 venicecucina.com

Scopa takes spaghetti and meatballs to new heights with fresh parmesan and basil

Right there on Windward Circle, Venice Cucina is an oasis for anyone who feels like Italian dining should be a little less pretentious and a lot more casual. It’s BYOB, with no corkage fee, so grab a bottle of chianti across the street. The menu is extensive, with a variety of pastas, salads and 10 different thin-crust pizzas offered at reasonable prices.

Scopa Italian Roots 2905 Washington Blvd. (310) 821-1100 scopaitalianroots.com

Danny’s classic margherita pizza is a local favorite

Scopa is only a few doors down from Abbot Kinney Boulevard, and this beautifully modern high-end Italian restaurant totally fits the vibe. Created by celebrity chef Antonia Lofaso, the menu includes oxtail on rigatoni and other luxurious dishes from Lo Stivale.

Chicken fettucine alfredo is one of many tried-and-true classics at Venice Cucina

Locanda Positano 4059 Lincoln Blvd. (310) 526-3887 locandapositano.com

You know those romantic comedies where a couple goes out for a fancy Italian dinner and one of them orders the “pappardelle al cinghiale” because they don’t know Italian, then ends up with braised wild boar? That plays out here every day, and it’s delicious. This restaurant is a big part of Lincoln Boulevard’s Italian revival.

Locanda Positano boasts a diverse but selective variety of Italian wine

If anyone tries to point out that C&O Cucina is technically in Marina del Rey, just hand ‘em a few garlic knots to chew on. Don’t worry, there’s

more coming. With its celebrated Rat Pack Martini Lounge, the Cucina comes off a tad more grownup than its more family-oriented sister restaurant C&O Trattoria, where crayons come with the table and there’s a nightly “That’s Amore!” singalong. 2016 Westside Dining Guide

Something Sweet in

Santa Monica Life in Santa Monica can be pretty sweet — literally. From fresh bakery and gourmet donuts to specialty cheesecake and Italian ice, desserts are very much in vogue here despite the city’s reputation for obsessing over healthy eating. Perhaps the lesson here is that it’s healthy to treat yourself once in a while.

Rocco’s Cheesecake

La Monarca Bakery

1701 Pico Blvd. (310) 396-1701 roccoscheescake.com

1300 Wilshire Blvd. (310) 451-1114 lamonarcabakery.com

From the classic to the exotic, Rocco’s Cheesecake is a tasting tour of the limitless possibilities of soft cheese, eggs and sugar. Flavor adventurers can try a slice of Honey Wasabi Pea, Mango Macadamia or Green Tea & Honey; those seeking a more traditional delicacy have the go-to Rocco’s N.Y. Classic as well as Tiramisu Cheesecake, Cookies n’ Cream or Chocolate Marble.

Sweet and spicy flavors from south of the border shine at this Mexican pastry shop. The dulce de leche croissant and cake are favorites and can be paired with a Mexican hot chocolate or the Café Oaxaca, a latte with spicy, dark chocolate.

Vanilla Bake Shop’s sweets may be pint-sized, but they pack a powerful sugar rush. Offering macarons, mini cupcakes and shooters — desserts in mini shot glasses — in flavors from Meyer lemon raspberry to banana chocolate chip, this boutique bakery hits the sweet spot for life’s little indulgences.

Spazio Café

2307 Main St. (310) 450-5042 ritasofsm.com

1511 Montana Ave. (310) 899-6769 spaziocafela.com

Known colloquially as “water ice” in the northeast, this East Coast import is perfect for a hot afternoon by the beach, or “the shore” as they say in Jersey. A cross between a sorbet and a slushy, this Italian ice treat comes in a variety of flavors that include mango to pistachio.

Sip slowly at Spazio. This café specializes in Italian coffees, espressos and cappuccinos, but its signature beverage is hot chocolate — 18 varieties of it. Choose from accent flavors such as almond, strawberry or hazelnut, and even whiskey or rum. The Caramel-Pretzel Chocolate Chunk cookie is one of Cookie Good’s bestsellers

A Rita’s Italian Ice Gelati with Vanilla Custard and Orange-Peach-Mango Ice

With more than 70 cookie flavors on its menu, Cookie Good is paradise for the cookie connoisseur. The shop melds dessert with breakfast and snack time by enfolding pretzels, marshmallows, Coco Puffs, Rice Krispies, Snickers and even frosted animal crackers into its various confections.

Huckleberry Café

Caprice Pastries

Helmed by French pastry chef JeanLouise Kippelen, this cash-only patisserie offers a taste of France in sweets ranging from tiny tarts to wedding cakes. Say bon appétit with Kippelin’s specialty, “The Swan” — a choux à la crème pastry carved up to resemble the elegant bird.

Nutella + coffee = delicious!

The donuts at Sidecar are at once both sweet and savory. Sugar and salt join forces in the butter & salt donut, a vanilla bean cake with brown butter glaze and fleur de sel. Bacon bits are sprinkled on top of the popular maple bacon donut, and the cornbread donut (with corn kernels inside!) is topped with sorghum brown butter glaze.

A fruit, flower and yogurt tart at Huckleberry 1014 Wilshire Blvd. (310) 451-2311 huckleberrycafe.com

Imagine a perfectly balanced lemonade in the form of a cake and you have Huckleberry’s lemon poppy seed teacake. A sugary brown rim encases a soft, spongy and yellow center, creating a satisfying mesh of sweetness and citrus. If lemon isn’t your thing, the blueberry cornmeal cake and Niman Ranch maple bacon biscuit are equally satisfying choices. 2016 Westside Dining Guide

Around the World in

Westchester Westchester has a reputation of being not quite as culturally sophisticated as neighboring communities to the north. But the truth is that Westchester is home to not only one of the busiest airports in the country, but also a culinary scene with international flair. Here you can take a culinary trip around the globe without taking off your shoes for the TSA.

Kanpai

Chalet Edelweiss

8325 Lincoln Blvd. (310) 338-7223 kanpai-sushi.net

8740 S. Sepulveda Blvd. (310) 645-8740 chaletedelweiss.us

Kanpai offers traditional Japanese cuisine with a California twist, including fresh-caught seasonal fish from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. The delicious live scallops, any of the K rolls and the kitchen’s signature Ramen dishes are all good choices. Make it a celebration with any of 20 varieties of premium sake. Choose from steak, chicken or pork to build a taco combination plate

The Swiss may be known for neutrality, but Chalet Edelweiss is partisan to Austro-German cooking. Try some Swiss dried beef with Tête de Moine cheese or the Käse-Bier-Suppe mit Schwarzwälder Schinken — Erdinger beer with black forest ham and cheese in a tasty, soulwarming soup. The tap list includes Köstritzer Schwarzbier, a mellow alternative to the current hops craze.

2016 Westside Dining Guide

Indulging in authentic Mexican cooking at Paco’s Tacos Cantina is not just a good idea, it’s a local tradition. The festively decorated restaurant makes all its tortillas by hand after you order, and portions are massive. The tacos de carne asada with rice and beans will leave you satisfied, and the beef, avocado and melted cheese Supermex burrito might just knock you out cold.

Thai Talay

Truxton’s American Bistro

8411 Lincoln Blvd. (310) 670-3055 thethaitalay.com

Westchester has quite a few great Thai restaurants, but the stylish contemporary ambience of Thai Talay makes it a great spot for date night. The kitchen follows the décor with a current approach to Indochinese cooking. Pair the Dumpling Delight with the Scallop Lemongrass or indulge in the Chef’s Choice Lamb Chop to make it a perfect night out.

Jino’s Pars 5844 W. Manchester Ave. (310) 645-6666 jinospars.com

Jino’s Pars is a restaurant divided — half Persian, half Italian — but that’s a good thing. Jino’s kitchen navigates the unlikely pairing with success, so come as a group and don’t be afraid to pair a traditional thin-crust pizza with a spicy lamb kebab or a beef, onion and splitpea stew topped with fried eggplant and dried limes. Just don’t forget the baklava for dessert.

Former sushi chef KC Wakunaga puts a Japanese twist on a Paris staple. KC’s can whip up enormous, made-to-order crêpes in just about a minute. The menu includes more than 50 different savory and dessert-style crêpes, all prepared with a fresh house-made batter. The Creamy Grilled Chicken crêpe is a must-try, but don’t forget about the Hot Nutella Custard crêpe for dessert.

Classic American cooking deserves a place on the global culinary map, and Truxton’s American Bistro delivers. Since opening in 2006, Truxton’s has emerged as one of L.A.’s premiere casual neighborhood restaurants by reinventing classics with contemporary ideas. The Portland Half-Pound Burger topped with sautéed mushrooms, fontina cheese and caramelized onions is a crowd pleaser.

Party it up

In Playa Going out for a drink (or five) in Venice or Santa Monica requires a bit of work — not just Ubering from bar to bar, but making sure you’ve spent enough time dressing up to look like you’re appropriately dressed down. Playa del Rey, however, makes a pub crawl easy with its walkable row of laid-back bars along Culver Boulevard. And now Playa Vista is getting in on the action with a pair of casual craft beer bars that are worth checking out before crossing the mysterious darkness of the Ballona Wetlands to see what adventures await. And yeah, the food isn’t bad either…

13020 Pacific Promenade, Suite 1 (310) 496-3966 gulpbrewco.com

185 Culver Blvd. (310) 823-6222 the-shacks.com

Beer, conversation and fried food flow freely here and won’t take a toll on your wallet. Brave a karaoke night for a more rambunctious time or just kick back with a Shackburger and a side of onion rings to go with a pint of pleasure from the El Segundo Brewing Co.

This new Playa Vista restaurant and brewpub boasts seven large-screen TVs and 37 beers on tap — 37! If that isn’t enough to get you there tonight, try this: a gourmet burger, heap of fries and any draft beer for $15 any day of the week.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar

This tiny, triangular no-frills bar behind Cantalini’s Salerno Beach doesn’t mess around when it comes to stiff and affordable drinks. Take life one sip at a time and use some of your change to play a few tunes from the jukebox packed with classic tunes the cool kids ignore further up the coast.

Fresh beef, hand-cut fries and more craft beer tap handles than you can count on your hands makes Hopdoddy a new destination for beer drinkers in Runway at Playa Vista. Try a hoppy 512 IPA or take a walk on the malty side with a St. Arnold Fancy Lawnmower. The Tripel’s garlic shoestring fries arrive with horseradish honey mustard and spiced aioli

Abandon hope of sobriety, all ye who enter the Harbor Room

Craft beer + sophisticated contemporary dining + lots of young people at communal tables = The Tripel, the first Playa del Rey restaurant to answer the call of craft beer culture. Call it Silver Lake by the beach if you must, but if you want to impress a beer drinker, go here.

Bacari PdR’s Bacaro fries are served with sunflower, roasted garlic, smoked pepper sauce and a fried egg

This spacious dual-room dive bar appeals to just about everybody, with live music and karaoke drawing enthusiastic crowds. The Prince harkens back to a simpler time when it was enough for a bar to just be a bar, and that’s a very good thing.

“Country barbecue shack in the city!

310.821.6939 Texas bbq

Morfia’s has a real brick smoker, crucial for getting the traditional product. Real Texas barbecue has a chewy exterior called bark, a rosy ring where the smoke has penetrated the meat, and an interior that is moist and tender but not mushy....There are many dessert choices at Morfia’s and they’re all made in-house, so there’s a good chance you’ll find something you like.” — Excerpts from restaurant review by Richard Foss
