CONCEPT
Targu Ocna city is placed in a very touristic area, nearby Slanic Moldova resort and city of Bacau. The Targu Ocna Saline is different because it is one of the most industrial active salines in Romania and at the same time tourists come here for salt therapy from all over the country. The saline is organized in 12 underground levels, out of which one -the 9th- is for tourists, however there is no concern for having an informational prior space that can offer tourists interesting things to find out and do throughout the day.
The intent of the project is to create an experimental path of salt and halite and to build diverse multi-functional spaces that will attract more tourists. The museum is integrated in the east hill on the property, at the boundary between under and on ground, creating an interactive, mystic path with diffuse light and sky lights - a volume that emerges from the landscape. The main expo spaces are located between 2 semi-public multi-functional areas - the entrance with the “funnel room for concerts or conferences, or the projection room, and final part of the path with the panoramic restaurant where you can observe the industrial site.
The concept of the building is to create a scenography of the raw salt crystal, by repeatedly using it’s microscopically unit - the CUBE. The entrance of the museum is inspired from the image on HALITE (the binding structure of salt cubes). The long volume with punctual galleries combines the volumetric style of the buildings on the site that are either long or isolated. During the day, the unfinished materials suggest the look of a rough mineral and create the mystery the light and the earthy feel of the underground space, and during the night, the light transmitting concrete transforms the building in a light signal. The new building will bring more tourists to the saline, increasing the profit of the company, and will become a new architectural landmark.
