Introduction This book is a culmination of my work from 2014. These works are from my senior year of undergraduate studies at The Catholic University of America through all of my graduate studies at The Catholic University of America as well. My thesis, Aroma Falls- Healing Through Nature, was inspired by a graduate independent study in the topic of Land art, Paths in Nature - Land Art. The idea of using the natural world and elements that are site specific to create art and architecture was something that I have been researching since my senior studio project, Oenology -Wine + Bio Crafting. This project uses existing elements in nature, two rocks found on site, to design a horizontal oriented architecture that creates a spine path between the two natural rock elements on site to link the architecture and all of its program together with the surrounding landscape. Like Michael Heizer’s works “they are about space and an experience of landscape…” my architecture and land art projects have been focused on studying further this idea of designing with the land and using what the land has to

offer to enhance the earth and create a dynamic beauty for all who encounter it. The Offering and The Fishers of Men, both design build projects, are built examples of how nature inspired architecture brings the spirit of the place to life and allows those who encounter it to feel the strength and energy of the land and become one with nature. For my thesis I focused on capturing the beauty of nature and looked at how nature becomes experiential to create a simple yet powerful architecture that brings a visual consciousness, fosters a sustainable consciousness, and has the power to heal and inspire change. I hope to inspire the reader of this book to open their eyes to the natural world round them and feel inspired to create a changed world full of beauty, tranquility, healing and inspiration for all who encounter it.

I want to paint the landscape and shape it to call out its beauty of color, textures and aromas to create a place of tranquility, healing, and inspiration for all who encounter it.

Aroma Falls - Healing Through Nature “Making The Revenant was about man’s relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow …For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted”(2016 Oscar Winners Oscar Acceptance Speech). As Leonardo DiCaprio received his 2016 Oscar for Best Actor in Leading Role he gave a memorable speech about the power that cinematic art, from Emmanuel Lubezkihas, has on capturing nature and creating a visual response that brings forth a sustainable conciseness and has the power to change the way man views and interacts with the natural world. Watching the way Emmanuel filmed the natural environment and brought the beauty and healing quality of the natural world through the cinematography of the film, The Revenant, has inspired me. Film, photography, art, restaurants, and the fashion industry are all capturing nature and creating a visual response that brings forth a sustainable consciousness to those that interact with it.

4

Nature has the power to chance a person’s life; we need creative architectural design that brings out the dynamic beauty of nature and advances healing and change to those that encounter it. Through my thesis I want to capture the beauty of nature and look at how nature becomes still life and how still life becomes experiential to create simple yet powerful architecture that brings a visual response, fosters a sustainable consciousness, and has the power to heal and Inspire change. If we look at nature as art and look at nature as the new still life we can be inspired to design and create experiential architecture that is nature inspired and becomes the foundation for well being, healing, and inspiration.

STILL LIFE

At the start of my thesis I looked at biology and narrowed down bio designed precedents into seven natural categorical spheres. These spheres are: Geosphere, Microbial Biosphere, Atmosphere, Zoological Biosphere, Botanical Biosphere, Hydrosphere, and Noosphere. These spheres helped subdivide creative projects that used biology and nature to advanced the built environment. Two of the botanical biospheres that influenced my thesis most were the botanical biosphere and the zoological biosphere.

6

The zoological biosphere encompasses the animal kingdom of the Earth. Three compelling projects that use animals are Local River by Studio Mathieu Lehanneur, The Seed of Narcissus by Tomas Libertiny, and Egg and Slug by Studio Paula Hayes. Local River is a project that takes into account the importance of locally sourced food. This tank is a miniature fish farm kitchen garden; the plants in this tank are able to gather nutrients from the waste of the fish while the fish are kept in cleaner water because of the plants. This project is a miniature ecosystem creating a local river small enough to fit in someones home. Egg and Slug is a project that is a two terrarium sculpture that inhabit lush plant life and inspect life inside an architectural structure though technology. The Seed of Narcissus is a project that uses animal life and their behaviors to help humans design objects that would use resources and energy into the daily life of bees. The project is fascinating in how it does not only create a visual response and a sustainable consciousness, but it is dynamic, beautiful, and cutting edge using animals to help in the creation of design innovation. For my thesis along side of my three goals [creating a visual response, bringing forth a sustainable consciousness, and having the power to heal], I want to design a miniature ecosystem from one of the seven types of ecosystems that exist on Earth [forests, meadows, ponds, lakes, wetlands, estuaries, coral reefs].

Geo

The botanical biosphere encompasses all of the plants of the Earth. Two architectural projects that use botany are Split Rocker by Jeff Koons and Dior Paris week fashion runway by Raf Simons. Split Rocker by Koons and other projects by Koons brings lively color and powerful aroma in animal form into an environment that might not have such luscious natural life. Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons created rooms filled with flowers as a back drop to his paris Dior fashion show. The runway became a walk through this house with different colored flower rooms. This flower covered house was inspired by the inside of a Jeff Koons puppy. The aroma in the room was revolutionary; people were in awe at the smell and the reactions. In the film “Dior and I shows how nature really affects humans in a powerful way and can inspire and heal. These projects are amazing and so full of life, color, and aromas that do a really good job at creating a visual response, bringing forth a sustainable consciousness, and have the power to heal.

Architecture can heal. If we design with the Earth and its landscape, we can use the land we live in to build on it and to go into it, as well as on top of it, and go above it, into the trees, to be more a part of it. If we use all of the natural elements that the Earth gives to us to construct shelter for those to inhabit it, we can teach others to build. We can use the good energy that the land provides to better the lives of all on the planet. Utilizing the land and understating the layers that the land has to offer, we can devise ways that use natural materials to design the built environment and propagate new life. This will enhance the Earth and create a dynamic beauty for all who encounter it. Magnifying nature’s essences of colors, textures, and smells can reach into the human body through the blood steam, the olfactory system, and the brains limbic system to empower human healing. If we become more progressive in our understanding of what our world needs to sustain human life, the built environment will not only provide shelter for all those on Earth, but heal and change the world for the good of all mankind.

I want to design within the land. I want to use all that the land has to offer and go into the land as well as on top of the land and above the land into the the trees. I believe that using the land and manipulating the land will enhance the earth and create a dynamic beauty for all who encounter it.

Because of this I chose a site on the Piedmont. Based on my program of an aroma therapy healing center, I knew that I needed to find fertile land that is full of spring water. I looked into the rock aquifers along the coast to see where I could find rock water for use.

With the program I want to enhance nature’s colors, textures, and smells to empower human healing. Architectural landscaping will be the way in which I can create visually powerful natural sights. Aroma therapy, through flower extraction, will be the way in which I incorporate smell into my project and allow the flower essence to enter the human body through the blood stream, the olfactory system, and the brain limbic system.

Looking in Maryland I mapped out where the mountains meet the coastal plain and found a site in Frederick Maryland within the piedmont area within the Municipal Forest of the City of Frederick, a protected watershed which is within the resource conservation zoning.

When I started looking for a site I knew I wanted a site that would be close enough for me to go visit often. From there I studied the structure of land to understand what the land has to offer. I realized that the piedmont, where the mountains touch the fall line, is the most fertile ground.

Looking at the layers of the land I found that there are seven main layers. These layers are: large trees, small trees, bushes, small ferns, moss, large rocks, and spring water. The large trees are scattered around the site but there are mainly smaller trees and bushes everywhere. The large rocks are concentrated near the spring water streams, and the moss grows everywhere. The site is beautifully abundant with life, color, and energy.

FLOWER EXTRACTION To understand the process of flower extraction to create oils for aroma therapy, I collected flowers and gently dropped each flower into the surface of the water. I placed the flower water in the sun for two hours. I removed the flowers [mother essence] and placed them into a bottle with alcohol [stock bottle] to then create the medicine used in aroma therapy. PROGRAM I further explored the program to encompass outdoor gardens, land art, lodging, and healing spas. Designing a healing oasis where someone can come and be a part of the land, live on the land, and use the natural essences of the land for healing. The living units will be sheltered within the landscape fostering healing for those staying as well as offering views out into the vast forest. There will also be lodging for land artists that come to the site and create instillations while they stay. They will help mold the land and bring out its beauty through out the seasons. VISUAL SYSTEM INDOOR CONTROLLED ECOSYSTEMS On the site there will be indoor meadow controlled environments to allow for growth of flowers all year round. These flowers will be used for healing purposes. Their essences will be extracted and used for aroma therapy. OUTDOOR GARDENS There will be outdoor landscaped gardens that create gathering points of reflection and healing. FLOWER SHOP There will be a flower shop for those that want to pick their own flowers from the meadow and take a piece of the site home with them. BEAUTY SHOP There will be a beauty shop craft market where beauty products will be made from the meadow and sold.

BLOOD STREAM OIL MASSAGE ROOMS There will be under ground level massage rooms that are dark and allow for natural light from above. These rooms will be located near the water spas and are for visitors and those that are staying in the living units. SPRING BATHS There will be designed natural spring water baths that are indoors, underground, and outdoors. The outdoor and indoor spas will have options of more man made controlled spring environments to less controlled spring environments. These springs baths are for visitors and those that are staying in the living unit. OLFACTORY SYSTEM TEA ROOMS There will be rooms for drinking tea that will be placed above ground to view the landscape. The tea will very with the season. These tea rooms will be for visitors as well as for those staying in the living units. BRAIN LIMBIC SYSTEM INHALATION ROOMS There will be designed rooms for inhalation. This process is the most direct and effective way of aroma therapy. These rooms will be in a light space floating above the ground with views out into the landscape with beds for the inhalation process to take place. DIFFUSER ROOMS There will be designed rooms for diffusers of different flower essences. These essences will very with the season. These rooms will sit within the ground and be dark. They will have one source of light coming from above with differs and comfortable seating.

DESIGN BY NATURE Claude Monet was a painter who designed the landscape to call out the beauty of nature that surrounded him. His home today has become a landmark for the town of Giverny bringing art to a new focus. This is an incredible story about an artist’s understanding of the beauty of nature and the design of nature to not only inspire his life but to live on inspiring many after. Antonio Gaudi excelled in architecture based on nature’s geometric form. He used nature in all aspects of his design create beautifully dynamic nature inspired spaces. For my thesis I painted the landscape and shaped it to call out its beauty of color, textures, and aromas to create a place of tranquility, healing, and inspiration for all who encounter it Finding new ways to foster flower growth in interior controlled environments. By creating an incision on the land and building the majority of the program under ground I will be able to capture the energy of the flowing stream water as well as capture the energy from underground

soil and bacteria, healing and enhancing the surrounding nature as well as fostering healing through aroma therapy. This project is designed with nature and created with an architectural language that is one with the landscape and comes out of the land. Using elements on the structure, such as rocks, allows for the architecture to blend in with the surrounding landscape.

INDIGENOUS PLANTS Indigenous plants will be grown within the body of the canyon. This central canyon will become an enclosed meadows ecosystem full of life, color, and vibrance. Restoration of the forest will grow from the inside out like a healing scar within the landscape protecting indigenous plants of the Frederick Municipal Watershed. Here are a list of the indigenous plants from the site. Herbaceous Plants Eupatorium dubium - Joe-Pye weed Eupatorium perfoliatum - common boneset Liatris spicata - blazingstar Lilium canadense - Canada lily Lilium superbum - Turk’s cap lily Lobelia cardinalis - cardinal flower Lobelia siphilitica - great blue lobelia Oenothera fruticosa - sundrops Senecio aureus - golden ragwort Sisyrinchium atlanticum - coastal blue-eyed grass Solidago rugosa - wrinkle leaf goldenrod Verbena hastata - blue vervain Herbaceous Emergents (growing up out of water) Acorus calamus - sweet flag Iris versicolor - blue flag iris Juncus canadensis - Canada rush Juncus effusus - soft rush Nuphar luteum (advena) - yellow water lily Nymphaea odorata - fragrant water lily Osmunda regalis - royal fern Peltandra virginica - arrow arum Pontederia cordata - pickerelweed Sagittaria latifolia - duck potato Scirpus cyperinus - woolgrass Scirpus pungens - three-square Typha latifolia - broad-leaved cattail

Using the Silhouette of the land to foster land art is an integral part of the design, creating paths that allow one to wonder on the land. This section shows the architectural gem which partly encloses the canyon cut within the landscape. Designing within the land, as shown in this section, and creating a vertical ten story scar within the landscape allows for the collection of natural spring water from the running river. This designed canyon will house semi and fully enclosed ecosystems of aroma therapy plants which will be harvested on side and used in the spas and labs.

Every Soul is a Flower Blooming in Nature

Nature has influenced technology, the health, and growth of the human realm. It only seems natural to integrate this same nature into the lives of those who are in need of care. By using an organic form and natural remedies, architecture can provide an optima level of function, to obtain a healthy and joyful life. The study of biomimicry on this project was crucial. Biomimicry is the design-based approach to innovative ways of seeking sustainable solutions through the influence of nature and natural patterns. The design of living lung of nature in the center of our building to bring forth a sustainable consciousness and challenge those living and passing by to embody a more natural healthy lifestyle that promotes the well being of others and the planet in which we live on. I designed for the mind and body creating cave like baths that help calm the mind and heal the body. These spas are placed in the lower portion of the central lung of nature where the mind and body connect and use nature to facilitate healing. 36

Nature Tech - A Canvas for the Community As millennials come of age, one can see a shift in cultural trends as they begin to label themselves from “believers” to “nones.” Millennials are claiming a rejection of supernatural beliefs, while upholding the spirituality and morality attributed to traditional religions. We are proposing a space that uses traditional religious practices through modern interpretations. Our focus is on providing a canvas through which any person or group of people can adapt and use according to their own needs, so that they may come together as a whole community and connect on an intimate level. This New Petworth Spiritual Center relies on human connectedness. We believe that personal enlightenment is achievable by learning through others and sharing in our commonalities and differences. Finding empathy in another person’s view of the world opens yourself up to personal and spiritual growth and puts into perspective the power and grace of humanity. We sought to achieve this connectivity by utilizing the already found pride within the community to bring Petworth together, and provide a place where people could intimately interact with the site so that it may become the constant heartbeat and symbol of the community. Our idea is that this site could thus become not just an interactive space for the people physically located on the site, but through this media wall, people would be able to connect around the world through potentially an app or even through similar sites developed around the world. In the same way religions act as a universal connection among otherwise separate people, this technology holds the capability of shining light on the commonalities and dignity that each of us hold. 50

Oenology - Wine + Bio Crafting

Oentology is the science of wine making. Combining both wine and bio crafting bring the interconnection of the man made and the organic to create an expressive architecture. Designing a winery facing the Blue Ridge Mountains and creating two stones within the landscape to blend in with the landscape and foster a life within. Taking the existing natural form of the site; its bare nature with its lonesome rock and tree and incorporating the elements in creating a horizontal oriented architecture that goes with the land and extends and blends into the Blue Ridge Mountinas back drop. Designing an extension form the earth around it and make its guests feel connected to creation and back to nature. Spring water, located mainly in the north Virginia region is abundant and continually flowing. The natural water will be incorporated into the project exposed to the outside environment and in the interior ground of the project creating a baths the ground the site in nature, connecting to creation. Experimenting with layers of glass to create rock/ speleothem shapes to form bath like cave spaces within. The vertical strips of glass will help enclose the cave baths while also allow or light to pass through. 64

There will be spine path that connects all the spaces together. This spine path will run form one large rock found on one of the site to another large rock found on the other end of the site. The natural production of the wine is spaced with natural rocks from the site become one with nature. The natural wine is enjoyed where the rocks are slicked vertically and paneled with vertical glass making the transition from purely organic to technology. Bio crafting comes into play with the art studios. Here the wine is expressed thought he human hand and takes abstract form. Now the natural rocks become solely sheets of glass creating a rock form that allows light to penetrate through.

The Fishers of Men

The celebration of the fishers of men passages from the gospel of Matthew in concert with the mysterious pagan god, Mannaman Mac Lir, commander of the boat passages between the sun and the underwater nether world. Both influences reflect deeply embedded cultural and sacred stories of Celtic history in the Cong area of mayo and Galway. The architecture celebrates the merger of St. Patrick’s Christianity with historical pagan worship. This project was built in what is known as a magical forest in the town of Cong, Ireland. This architecture was designed to resemble a the tall trees of the forest and blend in becoming a resting area for the traveling pilgrims and those exploring the forest. The idea was that this gathering space reflects the fishermen’s nets and their casting of the nests within the water. There are blue mosaic tiles that are within the interior walls and ceiling is made of glass and steel to give you the feeling that you are under water within the net. This project was deigned and built in 6 months. The build was held over eight days. 80

The Offering

“Molten mountains see, Sun-woven silhouettes, Water shimmers audible light This design is a sacred space is for the Mhuysqa community, an indigenous tribe in Colombia. This project was designed to integrate the Mhuysqa beliefs and ways of worship. One is to always proceed around he place of offering before entering. The ceremony in the Mhuysqa tribe is celebrated with a four flames, signifying the four natural elements on the earth: fire, water, air, and land. The ceremony is give thanks to the gods of the earth that provide us with everything we have. These ceremonies are celebrated in circular gathering areas. We designed and built this gathering center, The Offering, in an oval shape with four central fire pits. The ceiling cascades down from the center creating a strong center to the ceremonial house. The walls do not come up to touch the roof so that there can be views out to the two mountain gods. This project was deigned and built in 6 months. The build was held over nine days. 86

This project is beautiful and really helped me learn how to design to make something build able. It was the first design build that I have experienced and it gave me a lot of knowledge on the built environment and how to bring a project to fruition.

Silhouette of Light

This object of light is about the human form and how light shines through each of us illuminating the world around us. I chose to explore how the human form can allow light to shine through it instead of around it as it usually does. I started with some abstracted sketches of the human form trying to evoke then human figure without being too explicit about it. I then went on to look at artists such as Jeff Koons looking at how he represents the human figure. From there I went into photography and photographed myself trying to capture the beauty of light within the human figure. I chose to use plexi glass as means to etch the human figure in sections taking from the works of David Spriggs and created my object of light. 92

Papal Funrnishings

1st Place Winner in the Design Competition for the Mass of Pope Francis in the Washington D.C. on September 2015. Part of the design team that designed all the furnishing for the Mass given by Pope Francis for the Canonization of Saint Junípero Serra. The concept of this design was to respond to the existing conditions of the National Basilica in a dignified and simple manner in order to fit the “permanence” of the Shine and suit the desires of Pope Franci’s lifestyle. In order to respond to the traditional Byzantine style of the basilica while also maintains the element of simplicity, we have combined the use of the arch with a refined design while incorporating the same materials already utilized in the Shine. The strength and character of the sone gives the pieces a sense of purpose first of the holy liturgies, and the “timeless” detailing is symbolic of the Faith. The Papal chair is designed to bring focus, not on itself, but on the Vicar of Christ himself who will preach from it. 98

Graphic Design + Editing

I was design and editor of the Summer of Institute of Architecture Journals as well as a book that my professor and I are writing on the travel to the Island of Pantelleria. The 2017 Island of Pantelleria, Sicily, Italy Summer Architecture Guide: Pantelleria. Includes work from my body of Photography of the Island The 2014 Summer Institute for Architecture Journal Volume 10: Hybrid Scale. The 2013 Summer Institute for Architecture Journal Volume 9: Absence. 102

103

The theme for this journal was “Absence. WE looked at how to properly show, through images and text, the full experience of the summer here in the architecture building at The Catholic University of America. Like the theme we found it appropriate that the journal would be one of minimalism. We found it fundamental that it be simple and straight forward to the point, leaving room for further individual thought.

104

105

In this journal we chose to combine the 2014 and 2015 Summer Institute Journal. We used the theme “Hybrid Scale to create one cohesive piece. Working with diverging themes and ideas we were able to connect and create one season throughout the journal by creating difference in images and sizes and placement of text. The full summer experience at the School of Architecture and Planning at the Catholic University of America during the past two years was our main goal.

This book is meant to be a contemporary travel guide to the Island of Pantelleria, a same Island in Sicily, Italy. This book project is still underway and displays an array of informant for the carrier to experience the Island through a different lens. The Photography in this book is my body of work that is on display at throughout the Island’s Wineries.

I like to explore the land, become a part of it, capture its elements, and feel its strength within me.

Nature becomes a part of me, flowing through me like the flow of the wind.

I feel the labor of the land, the love from its people, and the strength in contrast of its inhabitants. I see the hands of the land, layers of nature and cultivation as the spine of the Island.

I feel the contrast of the Island,

My photography encapsulates these contrasts of the Island,

the sharp wind on my skin, the silky heat of the bubbling volcanic waters on my body.

creating a heightened awareness at the active nature around us.

My art is about capturing these moments in time.

My art is about expressing the Island in a way that would make someone look further, look deeper at nature and its dynamic beauty.

My art is about contrastthe contrast of wet and dry the contrast of hard and soft the contrast of solid and fragile 112

Paths in Nature - Land Art

110

125

I like to feel the land, interact with it, capture its beauty, and let it finally take over. I see nature in the flow of time, like the flow of the river.

I work the space just enough to allow for encounters.

Within its limits, I work with this flow of time.

My art is about starting to understand and pay more attention to nature.

My art is about capturing these precious moments in time.

In doing my art I have becomes more aware of nature’s preparation for change.

My art is about a path— path of recovery path in life spiritual path path in nature My art comes to me when I am walking within nature and encountering it. I allow the nature and time to mold my work. I work with materials found on site. Materials that nature provides me. I work with leaves at the change of the season to show the fragile quality of time. I also work with rocks, made from the flow of the river to show time through something more firm.

112

I change the natural flow of the leaves and rocks for someone to see the the human touch.

My art is the art of encounter. Encounter of nature and its beauty through time. I create paths— continous segmented stopped formed blurred

When I work on my art I feel the nature as a part of me. The flow of nature comes with me into my daily life. I make sure to capture the beauty of nature, something that many people let slip by. As an artist, as an architect, I let this beauty inspire me and flow through me.

In doing my art I have becomes more aware of the fragility of nature and yet its firmness. In working with leaves I see the quickness of time the fragility of nature and its transformation through change. My paths of leaves cover the ground for a moment then are blow away with the wind, the flow of the river, the passing of time. My paths of stones sit within the ground making the river flow around it collecting whatever passes in its its way. Working outside I feel the cold breeze in my hair, the warm sun on my face. I work through the rain and sun allowing all of nature to be part of my work. My art is natural, organic, temporary.
